NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
On Moab. Yahweh, God of Israel, says this: Wretched Nebo, for it has been ravaged, Kiriathaim hasbeen shamed and taken, shame and distraction on the citadel,1 Against Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Woe to Nabo, for it is laid waste, and confounded: Cariathaim is taken: the strong city is confounded and hath trembled.
the pride of Moab is no more! At Heshbon they plotted her downfal , 'Come, let us put an end to her asa nation!' And you too, inhabitants of Madmen, wil be silenced, the sword wil be after you.2 There is no more rejoicing in Moab over Hesebon: they have devised evil. Come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Therefore shalt thou in silence hold thy peace, and the sword shall follow thee.
A cry of agony goes up from Horonaim, 'Devastation! Dire calamity.3 A voice of crying from Oronaim: waste, and great destruction.
Moab has been shattered,' the agonised cries of her little ones ring out.4 Moab is destroyed: proclaim a cry for her little ones.
Up the slope of Luhith, weeping they go. On the road down to Horonaim is heard the shriek of disaster,5 For by the ascent of Luith shall the mourner go up with weeping: for in the descent of Oronaim the enemies have heard a howling of destruction.
'Away! Flee for your lives like the wild donkey into the desert!'6 Flee, save your lives: and be as heath in the wilderness.
Yes, since you relied on your deeds and your wealth, you wil be captured too. Chemosh wil go intoexile, with al his priests and princes.7 For because thou hast trusted in thy bulwarks, and in thy treasures, thou also shalt be taken: and Chamos shall go into captivity, his priests, and his princes together.
The despoiler wil descend on every town, not one will escape; the Valley wil be ravaged, the Plain beplundered as Yahweh has said.8 And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: and the valleys shall perish, and the plains shall be destroyed, for the Lord hath spoken:
Give Moab wings so that she can fly away, for her towns wil be laid in ruins where no one wil ever liveagain.9 Give a flower to Moab, for in its flower it shall go out: and the cities thereof shall be desolate, and uninhabited.
(Accursed be he who does Yahweh's work negligently! Accursed be he who deprives his sword ofblood!)10 Cursed be he that doth the work of the Lord deceitfully: and cursed be he that withholdeth his sword from blood.
From his youth Moab lived at ease, he settled on his lees, never having been decanted, never havinggone into exile: and so he kept his own flavour, his aroma was unchanged.11 Moab hath been fruitful from his youth, and hath rested upon his lees: and hath not been poured out from vessel to vessel, nor hath gone into captivity : therefore his taste hath remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
And so the days are coming, Yahweh declares, when I shal send him decanters to decant him; theywil empty his pitchers and break his wine jars to bits.12 Therefore behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will send him men that shall order and overturn his bottles, and they shall cast him down, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles one against another.
Moab wil be shamed by Chemosh then, as the House of Israel was shamed by Bethel in which theyput their trust.13 And Moab shall be ashamed of Chamos, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, in which they trusted.
How can you say, 'We are heroes, sturdy fighting men'?14 How do you say: We are valiant, and stout men in battle?
Moab has been ravaged, his cities scaled, the flower of his youth goes down to the slaughter, declares the King, whose name is Yahweh Sabaoth.15 Moab is laid waste, and they have cast down her cities: and her choice young men are gone down to the slaughter: saith the king, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
Moab's ruin is coming soon, his downfal comes at top speed.16 The destruction of Moab is near to come: the calamity thereof shall come on exceeding swiftly.
Grieve for him, all you living near him, all you who knew his name. Say, 'How shattered it is, thatmighty rod, that splendid sceptre!'17 Comfort him, all you that are round about him, and all you that know his name, say: How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod?
Come down from your glory, sit on the parched ground, daughter of Dibon, for the despoiler of Moabhas advanced on you, he has destroyed your strongholds.18 Come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst, O dwelling of the daughter of Dibon: because the spoiler of Moab is come up to thee, he hath destroyed thy bulwarks.
Stand by the roadside, keep watch, daughter of Aroer. Question fugitive and runaway, ask, 'What hashappened?'19 Stand in the way, and look out, O habitation of Aroer: inquire of him that fleeth: and say to him that hath escaped: What Is done?
'Moab has been shattered and shamed. Wail and shriek! Shout along the Arnon, Moab has been laidwaste!'20 Moab is confounded, because he is overthrown: howl ye, and cry, tell ye it in Amen, that Moab is wasted.
Judgement has also come on the Plain, on Holon, Jahzah, Mephaath,21 And judgment is come upon the plain country: upon Helon, and upon Jasa, and upon Mephaath.
Dibon, Nebo, Beth-Diblathaim,22 And upon Dibon, and upon Nabo, and upon the house of Deblathaim,
Kiriathaim, Beth-Gamul, Beth-Meon,23 And upon Cariathaim, and upon Bethgamul, and upon Bethmaon,
Kerioth, Bozrah, and al the towns of Moab, far and near.24 And upon Carioth, and upon Bosra: and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
Moab's horn has been cut off, his arm is broken, Yahweh declares.25 The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the Lord.
Make him drunk! He has set himself up against Yahweh; let Moab wal ow in his vomit and become alaughing-stock in his turn.26 Make him drunk, because he lifted up himself against the Lord: and Moab shall dash his hand in his own vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
Was Israel not a laughing-stock to you? Was he caught red-handed with the thieves, for you to shakeyour head whenever you mention him?27 For Israel hath been a derision unto thee: as though thou hadst found him amongst thieves: for thy words therefore, which thou hast spoken against him, thou shalt be led away captive.
Leave the towns, make the rocks your home, inhabitants of Moab. Learn from the dove that makes itsnest in the wal s of the gaping gorge.28 Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, you that dwell in Moab: and be ye Iike the dove that maketh her nest in the mouth of the hole in the highest place.
We have heard about Moab's pride, so very proud! What arrogance! What pride! What conceit! Whata haughty heart!29 We have heard the pride of Moab, he is exceeding proud: his haughtiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the loftiness of his heart.
-I know al about his presumption, Yahweh declares, his empty boasting, those empty deeds of his!30 I know, saith the Lord, his boasting, and that the strength thereof is not according to it, neither hath it endeavoured to do according as it was able.
-and so I lament for Moab, for al Moab I raise my cry and mourn for the people of Kir-Heres.31 Therefore will I lament for Moab, and I will cry out to all Moab, for the men of the brick wall that mourn.
More than for Jazer I weep for you, vineyard of Sibmah: your shoots stretched beyond the sea, they reached al the way to Jazer. On your harvest and vintage the despoiler has descended.32 O vineyard of Sabama, I will weep for thee, with the mourning of Jazer: thy branches are gone over the sea, they are come even to the sea of Jazer: the robber hath rushed in upon thy harvest and thy vintage.
Gladness and joy have vanished from the orchards of Moab. I have dried up the wine in the presses, the treader of grapes treads no more, the joyful shouting has ceased.33 Joy and gladness is taken away from Carmel, and from the land of Moab, and I have taken away the wine out of the presses: the treader of the grapes shall not sing the accustomed cheerful tune.
The cries of Heshbon and Elealeh can be heard as far as Jahaz. The shrieks resound from Zoar toHoronaim and Eglath-Shelishiyah, for even the Waters of Nimrim have become a wasteland.34 From the cry of Hesebon even to Eleale, and to Jasa, they have uttered their voice: from Segor to Oronaim, as a heifer of three years old: the waters also of Nemrim shall be very bad.
And in Moab I shal make an end, Yahweh declares, of anyone offering sacrifice on the high placesand anyone offering incense to his gods.35 And I will take away from Moab, saith the Lord, him that offereth in the high places, and that sacrificeth to his gods.
That is why my heart sobs like a flute for Moab, sobs like a flute for the people of Kir-Heres, since thewealth he had acquired is lost.36 Therefore my heart shall sound for Moab like pipes: and my heart a sound like pipes for the men of the brick wall: because he hath done more than he could, therefore they have perished.
Yes, every head is shaved, every beard cut off, gashes are on every hand, sackcloth round everywaist.37 For every head shall be bald, and every beard shall be shaven: all hands shall be tied together, and upon every back there shall be haircloth.
On al the housetops of Moab and in al its squares there is nothing but lamenting, for I have brokenMoab like an unwanted pot, Yahweh declares.38 Upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof general mourning: because I have broken Moab as an useless vessel, saith the Lord.
How shattered he is! Wail! Moab so shameful y in retreat! Moab has become a laughing-stock, a thingof horror to al his neighbours.39 How is it overthrown, and they have howled! How hath Moab bowed down the neck, and is confounded ! And Moab shall be a derision, and an example to all round about him.
For Yahweh says this: (Look, like an eagle, he wil hover, spreading his wings over Moab.)40 Thus saith the Lord: Behold he shall fly as an eagle, and shall stretch forth his wings to Moab.
The towns have been captured, the strongholds seized. (And the heart of Moab's warriors, that day,wil be like that of a woman in labour pains.)41 Carioth is taken, and the strong holds are won: and the heart of the valiant men of Moab in that day shall be as the heart of a woman in labour.
Moab wil be destroyed, no longer a people, for setting itself up against Yahweh.42 And Moab shall cease to be a people : because he hath gloried against the Lord.
Terror, the pit and the snare for you, inhabitant of Moab, Yahweh declares.43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare come upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord.
And anyone who escapes from terror wil fal into the pit, and anyone who climbs out of the pit wil becaught in the snare. Yes, I shall bring all this on Moab when the year comes for punishing them, Yahwehdeclares.44 He that shall flee from the fear, shall fall into the pit: and he that shall get up out of the pit, shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon Moab the year of their visitation, saith the Lord.
In the shelter of Heshbon the fugitives have paused, exhausted. But fire wil burst from Heshbon, aflame from the palace of Sihon, consuming the brows of Moab, the head of a turbulent brood.45 They that fled from the snare stood in the shadow of Hesebon: but there came a fire out of Kesebon, and a flame out of the midst of Seen, and it shall devour part of Moab. and the crown of the head of the children of tumult.
Disaster for you, Moab! The people of Chemosh are lost! For your sons have been taken into exileand your daughters into captivity.46 Woe to thee, Moab, thou hast perished, O people of Chamos: for thy sons, and thy daughters are taken captives.
But I shal bring back Moab's captives in the final days, Yahweh declares. Thus far the judgement onMoab.47 And I will bring back the captivity of Moab in the last days, saith the Lord. Hitherto the judgments of Moab.
