Jeremiah 37

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Zedekiah son of Josiah became king, succeeding Coniah son of Jehoiakim. Nebuchadnezzar king ofBabylon had made him king of Judah.	1 O rei Sedecias, filho de Josias, sucedeu a {Je} Conias, filho de Joaquim, tendo sido proclamado rei da terra de Judá por Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia.
2 But neither he nor his courtiers nor the people of the country paid any attention to the words Yahwehspoke through the prophet Jeremiah.	2 Nem ele, porém, nem seus súditos e a população da terra escutaram os oráculos que lhes transmitia o Senhor, por intermédio do profeta Jeremias.
3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophetJeremiah with this message, 'Intercede for us with Yahweh our God.'	3 O rei Sedecias enviou, entretanto, Jucal, filho de Selemias, e o sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maasias, ao profeta Jeremias, a fim de lhe dizer: Intercede por nós junto ao Senhor, nosso Deus.
4 Now Jeremiah was still moving freely among the people: he had not yet been put in prison.	4 Jeremias, que ainda não havia sido aprisionado, andava entre o povo.
5 Meanwhile Pharaoh's army was on the move from Egypt and the Chaldaeans besieging Jerusalem hadraised the siege when they heard the news.	5 Partira então do Egito o exército do faraó. Ao receberem tal notícia, os caldeus, que sitiavam Jerusalém, abandonaram a cidade.
6 Then the word of Yahweh came to the prophet Jeremiah as fol ows,	6 Nestes termos foi a palavra do Senhor dirigida ao profeta Jeremias: Eis o que diz o Senhor Deus de Israel:
7 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "To the king of Judah who sent you to consult me make this reply: IsPharaoh's army marching to your aid? It wil withdraw to its own country, Egypt.	7 assim falarás ao rei de Judá que te envia seus delegados para interrogar-me: o exército do faraó que saiu para vos dar socorro vai regressar ao Egito.
8 The Chaldaeans wil return to attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.	8 Voltarão os caldeus a sitiar a cidade, tomá-la-ão de assalto e a entregarão às chamas.
9 Yahweh says this: Do not cheer yourselves up by thinking: The Chaldaeans are leaving us for good.They are not leaving.	9 Oráculo do Senhor: não queirais enganar-vos, julgando que os caldeus se irão definitivamente. Eles não irão embora.
10 Even if you cut to pieces the whole Chaldaean army now fighting against you until there were only thewounded left, they would stand up again, each man in his tent, to burn this city down." '	10 Ainda que derrotásseis todo o exército dos caldeus que combate contra vós, e que dele só restassem feridos sob as tendas, cada um deles ainda se levantaria para incendiar a cidade.
11 At the time when the Chaldaean army, threatened by Pharaoh's army, had raised the siege ofJerusalem,	11 Quando as tropas dos caldeus se afastaram de Jerusalém, ante a aproximação do exército do faraó,
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the territory of Benjamin to see about a piece of his propertyamong the people there.	12 quis Jeremias sair da cidade para dirigir-se à terra de Benjamim, a fim de lá se reabastecer com o resto do povo.
13 He was at the Benjamin Gate when the guard commander there, a certain Irijah son of Shelemiah,son of Hananiah, arrested the prophet Jeremiah, shouting, 'You are deserting to the Chaldaeans!'	13 Encontrava-se porém um guarda às portas de Benjamim, chamado Jerias, filho de Selemias, filho de Ananias, o qual, ao chegar o profeta, deteve-o, dizendo: tu foges para os caldeus.
14 Jeremiah answered, 'It is a lie! I am not deserting to the Chaldaeans.' But Irijah would not listen toJeremiah and took him under arrest to the chief men.	14 É falso! retorquiu o profeta, eu não passo para os caldeus. Não quis porém Jerias ouvi-lo; prendeu-o e levou-o à presença dos chefes.
15 And the chief men, furious with Jeremiah, had him beaten and shut up in the house of the scribeJonathan, which had been turned into a prison.	15 E estes, enfurecendo-se contra Jeremias, açoitaram-no e prenderam-no na casa do escriba Jonatã, transformada em prisão.
16 Thus Jeremiah found himself in an underground vault. And there for a long time he stayed.	16 Foi então o profeta atirado num calabouço, onde permaneceu vários dias.
17 Later, King Zedekiah had him sent for, and the king questioned him privately in his palace. 'Is thereany word from Yahweh?' he asked. 'There is,' Jeremiah answered, and added, 'you wil be handed over to theking of Babylon.'	17 O rei Sedecias, porém, mandou-o buscar, a fim de interrogá-lo secretamente em seu palácio. Tens, porventura, perguntou-lhe, algum oráculo do Senhor? Sim, respondeu-lhe Jeremias. Serás entregue nas mãos do rei de Babilônia.
18 Jeremiah then said to King Zedekiah, 'What wrong have I done you, or your courtiers or this people,for you to have put me in prison?	18 E acrescentou ao rei Sedecias: em que te ofendi, a ti, aos teus servos e a teu povo, para que me lançasses na prisão?
19 Where are your prophets now who prophesied, "The king of Babylon wil not attack you or thiscountry"?	19 Onde estão os profetas que vos prediziam não dever mais voltar o rei de Babilônia contra vós e contra a terra?
20 So now I beg you to hear me, my lord king! I beg you to approve my request! Do not have me takenback to the house of the scribe Jonathan, or I shall die there.'	20 Escuta-me, agora, ó meu rei e digna-te acolher minha súplica: não permitas que seja eu reconduzido à casa do escriba Jonatã, para que eu não morra lá.
21 King Zedekiah then gave an order, and Jeremiah was confined in the Court of the Guard and given aloaf of bread a day from the Street of the Bakers as long as there was bread left in the city. So Jeremiah stayedin the Court of the Guard.	21 Ordenou então o rei Sedecias que Jeremias fosse retido no pátio do cárcere e que lhe dessem todos os dias uma torta de pão, da rua dos Padeiros, enquanto na cidade houvesse pão. E assim permaneceu Jeremias no pátio do cárcere.
