Jeremiah 37

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Zedekiah son of Josiah became king, succeeding Coniah son of Jehoiakim. Nebuchadnezzar king ofBabylon had made him king of Judah.	1 El rey Sedecías, hijo de Josías –a quien Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, había constituido rey en el país de Judá– reinó en lugar de Conías, hijo de Joaquím.
2 But neither he nor his courtiers nor the people of the country paid any attention to the words Yahwehspoke through the prophet Jeremiah.	2 Pero ni él, ni sus servidores, ni el pueblo del país escucharon las palabras que había dicho el Señor por medio del profeta Jeremías.
3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophetJeremiah with this message, 'Intercede for us with Yahweh our God.'	3 El rey Sedecías envió a Iucal, hijo de Selemías, y al sacerdote Sefanías, hijo de Maasías, para que dijeran al profeta Jeremías: «Ruega por nosotros al Señor, nuestro Dios».
4 Now Jeremiah was still moving freely among the people: he had not yet been put in prison.	4 Mientras tanto, Jeremías se desplazaba libremente en medio del pueblo, y aún no lo habían puesto en la cárcel.
5 Meanwhile Pharaoh's army was on the move from Egypt and the Chaldaeans besieging Jerusalem hadraised the siege when they heard the news.	5 Además, las tropas del Faraón habían salido de Egipto, y los caldeos que sitiaban a Jerusalén, al oír la noticia, habían levantado el asedio.
6 Then the word of Yahweh came to the prophet Jeremiah as fol ows,	6 La palabra del Señor llegó al profeta Jeremías, en estos términos:
7 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "To the king of Judah who sent you to consult me make this reply: IsPharaoh's army marching to your aid? It wil withdraw to its own country, Egypt.	7 Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Esto es lo que le dirán al rey de Judá, que los envía a consultarme: El ejército del Faraón que salió en auxilio de ustedes, se volverá a su país, a Egipto.
8 The Chaldaeans wil return to attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.	8 Entonces los caldeos volverán, combatirán contra esta ciudad, la tomarán y la incendiarán.
9 Yahweh says this: Do not cheer yourselves up by thinking: The Chaldaeans are leaving us for good.They are not leaving.	9 Así habla el Señor: No se engañen a ustedes mismos, diciendo: «Seguro que los caldeos se irán lejos de nosotros». ¡Porque ellos no se irán!
10 Even if you cut to pieces the whole Chaldaean army now fighting against you until there were only thewounded left, they would stand up again, each man in his tent, to burn this city down." '	10 Aun cuando derrotaran a todo el ejército de los caldeos que combaten contra ustedes, y no les quedaran más que algunos heridos, estos se levantarían cada uno en su carpa y prenderían fuego a esta ciudad.
11 At the time when the Chaldaean army, threatened by Pharaoh's army, had raised the siege ofJerusalem,	11 Como el ejército de los caldeos se había alejado de Jerusalén por el avance de las tropas del Faraón,
12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the territory of Benjamin to see about a piece of his propertyamong the people there.	12 Jeremías quiso salir de Jerusalén para ir al país de Benjamín, a fin de ocuparse allí de una repartición de bienes en medio de los suyos.
13 He was at the Benjamin Gate when the guard commander there, a certain Irijah son of Shelemiah,son of Hananiah, arrested the prophet Jeremiah, shouting, 'You are deserting to the Chaldaeans!'	13 Y mientras estaba en la puerta de Benjamín, donde se encontraba un capitán de guardias llamado Jirías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Ananías, este detuvo al profeta Jeremías, diciendo: «¡Vas a pasarte a los caldeos!».
14 Jeremiah answered, 'It is a lie! I am not deserting to the Chaldaeans.' But Irijah would not listen toJeremiah and took him under arrest to the chief men.	14 Jeremías respondió: «¡Es falso! Yo no me paso del lado de los caldeos». Pero Jirías no lo escuchó; detuvo a Jeremías y lo llevó ante los jefes.
15 And the chief men, furious with Jeremiah, had him beaten and shut up in the house of the scribeJonathan, which had been turned into a prison.	15 Estos se irritaron contra Jeremías, lo golpearon y lo encarcelaron en la casa de Jonatán, el secretario, que habían convertido en prisión.
16 Thus Jeremiah found himself in an underground vault. And there for a long time he stayed.	16 Así Jeremías fue a parar dentro de una cisterna abovedada y pasó allí mucho tiempo.
17 Later, King Zedekiah had him sent for, and the king questioned him privately in his palace. 'Is thereany word from Yahweh?' he asked. 'There is,' Jeremiah answered, and added, 'you wil be handed over to theking of Babylon.'	17 El rey Sedecías lo mandó atraer, y lo interrogó secretamente en su propia casa, diciendo: «¿Hay alguna palabra de parte del Señor?». «Sí», respondió Jeremías, y añadió: «Tú serás entregado en manos del rey de Babilonia».
18 Jeremiah then said to King Zedekiah, 'What wrong have I done you, or your courtiers or this people,for you to have put me in prison?	18 Luego Jeremías dijo al rey Sedecías: «¿Qué falta cometí contra ti, contra tus servidores y contra este pueblo, para que me hayan puesto en una prisión?
19 Where are your prophets now who prophesied, "The king of Babylon wil not attack you or thiscountry"?	19 ¿Dónde están los profetas que les profetizaban, diciendo: El rey de Babilonia no vendrá contra ustedes ni contra este país?
20 So now I beg you to hear me, my lord king! I beg you to approve my request! Do not have me takenback to the house of the scribe Jonathan, or I shall die there.'	20 Y ahora, ¡dígnate escuchar, rey, mi señor! Que mi súplica llegue hasta ti: ¡No me hagas volver a la casa de Jonatán, el secretario, no sea que muera allí!».
21 King Zedekiah then gave an order, and Jeremiah was confined in the Court of the Guard and given aloaf of bread a day from the Street of the Bakers as long as there was bread left in the city. So Jeremiah stayedin the Court of the Guard.	21 Entonces el rey Sedecías mandó poner bajo custodia a Jeremías en el patio de la guardia, y ordenó que le dieran cada día una rosca de pan de la calle de los Panaderos, hasta que no hubiera más pan en la ciudad. Y Jeremías permaneció en el patio de la guardia.
