Jeremiah 14

1 The word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah on the occasion of the drought.	1 Parola del Signore rivolta a Geremia in occasione della siccità:
2 'Judah is in mourning, her towns are pining, sinking to the ground; a cry goes up from Jerusalem.	2 « Giuda è in pianto, le sue porte giacciono desolate per terra, e si alza il grido di Gerusalemme.
3 The nobles send their servants for water, they come to the water-tanks, find no water, and return withtheir pitchers empty. Dismayed and bewildered, they cover their heads.	3 I maggiori mandano i minori all'acqua; questi vanno ad attingere, e, non trovando acqua, riportan vuoti i loro vasi: son confusi e afflitti, e si coprono la testa.
4 Because the soil is al cracked since the country has had no rain; the farmers are dismayed, they covertheir heads.	4 A causa della desolazione della terra, su cui non è caduta la pioggia, gli agricoltori son con­fusi e si copron la testa.
5 Even the doe in the countryside giving birth abandons her young, for there is no grass;	5 Ed an­che la cerva, nella campagna, fi­gliò ed abbandonò il parto permancanza d'erba.
6 the wild donkeys standing on the bare heights gasp for air like jackals: their eyes grow dim for lack ofpasture.'	6 E gli asini selvatici stan sopra le rupi a sor­bir l'aria come i dragoni: perdono il lume degli occhi per mancanzad'erba.
7 Although our sins witness against us, Yahweh, for your name's sake, intervene! Yes, our acts ofinfidelity have been many, we have sinned against you!	7 Se le nostre iniquità ci accu­sano, o Signore, agisci per amor del tuo nome, perchè molte son le nostre ribellioni: abbiamo peccato contro di te.
8 Yahweh, hope of Israel, its Saviour in time of distress, why are you like a stranger in this country, like atravel er staying only for one night?	8 O speranza d'Israele e suo salvatore nel tempo della tribolazione, perchè dovrai essere come straniero nella terra e come viaggiatore che si ferma a riposare?
9 Why are you like someone bemused, like a warrior who has no power to rescue? And yet, Yahweh,you are among us, we are called by your name. Do not desert us!	9 Perchè dovrai essere come un uomo vagolante, come un eroe che non può salvare? Ma tu sei in mezzo a noi, o Signore, il tuo nome è invocato sopra di noi: non ci abbandonare!
10 Yahweh says this about this people, 'They take such pleasure in darting hither and thither, theycannot restrain their feet! But Yahweh takes pleasure in them no longer; now he wil keep their guilt in mind andpunish their sins.'	10 Ecco quanto dice il Signore a questo popolo che ama tenere in moto i suoi piedi e non si dà posa e non piace al Signore: « Ora si ricorderà delle Loro iniquità, e ne punirà i peccati ».
11 Yahweh then said to me, 'Do not intercede for this people or their welfare.	11 E il Signore mi disse: « Non pregare per il bene di questo popolo.
12 If they fast, I wil not listen to their plea; if they offer burnt offerings and cereal offerings I wil notaccept them. Rather, I shal make an end of them by sword, famine and plague.'	12 Anche se digiuneranno non ne ascolterò le preghiere, e se mi offrono olocausti e vittime, non le accetterò, perchè li voglio distruggere colla spada, colla fame, colla peste ».
13 'Ah, Lord Yahweh,' I answered, 'here are the prophets telling them, "You will not see the sword,famine wil not touch you; I promise you true peace in this place." '	13 Ed io risposi: « Ah! ah! ah! Signore Dio! I profeti dicon loro: — Voi non vedrete la spada, non verrà tra voi la fame, ma egli vi darà una vera pace in questo luogo — ».
14 Then Yahweh said to me, 'The prophets are prophesying lies in my name; I have not sent them, Igave them no orders, I never spoke to them. Delusive visions, hol ow predictions, daydreams of their own, that iswhat they prophesy to you.	14 E il Signore mi disse: « I profeti vaticinan menzogne in mio nome: io non li ho mandati, non ho dato loro alcun ordine, e non ho parlato ad essi. Visioni false, divinazioni, imposture, e le illusioni del loro cuore vi dànno come profezie.
15 Therefore, Yahweh says this: The prophets who prophesy in my name when I have not sent them,and tel you there will be no sword or famine in this country, these same prophets will meet their end by swordand famine.	15 Per questo, così parla il Signore riguardo ai profeti che vaticinano in mio nome, che io non ho mandati, e che dicono: — La spada e la fame non verrà su questa terra: — di spada e di fame periranno quei profeti.
16 And as for the people to whom they prophesy, they wil be tossed into the streets of Jerusalem,victims of famine and the sword, with not a soul to bury them: neither them nor their wives, nor their sons, northeir daughters. I shall pour their own wickedness down on them.	16 E i popoli ai quali profetano saran gettati per le vie di Gerusalemme, vittime della fame e della spada, e non vi sarà chi li seppellisca, essi, le loro mogli, i loro figli e le loro figlie, e farò cadere sopra di essi il loro male.
17 'So say this word to them: May my eyes shed tears night and day, unceasingly, since the daughter ofmy people has sustained a fearsome wound, a crippling injury.	17 E tu dirai loro queste parole: « Gli occhi miei si struggano in lacrime notte e giorno, senza mai cessare, perchè la vergine figlia del mio popolo è straziata da grande rovina, da piaga oltremodo maligna.
18 If I go into the countryside, there lie those killed by the sword; if I go into the city, I see people torturedwith hunger; even prophets and priests roam the country at their wits' end.'	18 Se io esco alla campagna, ecco i morti di spada, se entro in città, ecco gli estenuati dalla fame. Gli stessi profeti e i sacerdoti sono andati in paese da loro ignorato ».
19 Have you rejected Judah altogether? Does your very soul revolt at Zion? Why have you struck usdown without hope of cure? We were hoping for peace -- no good came of it! For the moment of cure -- nothingbut terror!	19 Forse hai del tutto rigettato Giuda? La tua anima ha in abominio Sion? Perchè dunque ci hai percossi in modo che non c'è da guarire? Aspettammo la pace, e non c'è nulla di buono, il tempo del ristoro, ed ecco lo spavento.
20 Yahweh, we acknowledge our wickedness and our ancestors' guilt: we have indeed sinned againstyou.	20 Riconosciamo, o Signore, le nostre iniquità, l'iniquità dei nostri padri: abbiamo peccato contro di te.
21 For your name's sake do not reject us, do not dishonour the throne of your glory. Remember us; donot break your covenant with us.	21 Per amor del tuo nome non ci abbandonare alla vergogna, non far contro di noi un affronto al trono della tua gloria. Ricordati, non rompere la tua alleanza con noi.
22 Can any of the nations' Futile Ones make it rain? Can the heavens of their own accord give showers?Are you not the one, Yahweh our God? In you is our hope, since you make al these things.	22 V'è forse fra gli idoli delle nazioni chi faccia piovere? Posson forse dar la pioggia i cieli? Non sei tu il Signore Dio nostro da noi aspettato? Sei tu che hai fatte tutte queste cose.
