NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
1 Yahweh wil have pity on Jacob, he wil choose Israel once more and resettle them on their native soil.Foreigners will join them, attaching themselves to the House of Jacob.1 Prope est ut veniat tempus ejus,
et dies ejus non elongabuntur.
Miserebitur enim Dominus Jacob,
et eliget adhuc de Israël,
et requiescere eos faciet super humum suam ;
adjungetur advena ad eos,
et adhærebit domui Jacob.
2 Peoples wil take them and escort them home, and the House of Israel wil take them as slaves, menand women on Yahweh's soil. They wil enslave those who enslaved them and wil master their oppressors.2 Et tenebunt eos populi,
et adducent eos in locum suum ;
et possidebit eos domus Israël
super terram Domini
in servos et ancillas :
et erunt capientes eos qui se ceperant,
et subjicient exactores suos.
3 When that day comes, and Yahweh gives you rest from your suffering and torment and the grimservitude to which you have been subjected,3 Et erit in die illa : cum requiem dederit tibi Deus
a labore tuo, et a concussione tua,
et a servitute dura qua ante servisti,
4 you wil recite this satire on the king of Babylon and say: 'How did the tyrant end? How did hisarrogance end?4 sumes parabolam istam
contra regem Babylonis, et dices :
Quomodo cessavit exactor ;
quievit tributum ?
5 Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, the sceptre of rulers,5 Contrivit Dominus baculum impiorum,
virgam dominantium,
6 furiously lashing peoples with continual blows, angrily hammering nations, pursuing without respite.6 cædentem populos in indignatione
plaga insanabili,
subjicientem in furore gentes,
persequentem crudeliter.
7 The whole world is at rest and calm, shouts of joy resounding,7 Conquievit et siluit omnis terra,
gavisa est et exsultavit ;
8 the cypresses, the cedars of Lebanon, rejoice aloud at your fate, "Now that you have been laid low, noone comes up to fell us."8 abietes quoque lætatæ sunt super te,
et cedri Libani :
ex quo dormisti, non ascendet
qui succidat nos.
9 'On your account, Sheol below is astir to greet your arrival. He has roused the ghosts to greet you, althe rulers of the world. He has made al the kings of the nations get up from their thrones.9 Infernus subter conturbatus est
in occursum adventus tui ;
suscitavit tibi gigantes.
Omnes principes terræ
surrexerunt de soliis suis,
omnes principes nationum.
10 They will all greet you with the words, "So, you too are now as weak as we are! You, too, havebecome like us.10 Universi respondebunt, et dicent tibi :
Et tu vulneratus es sicut et nos ;
nostri similis effectus es.
11 Your pride has been flung down to Sheol with the music of your lyres; under you a mattress ofmaggots, over you a blanket of worms.11 Detracta est ad inferos superbia tua,
concidit cadaver tuum ;
subter te sternetur tinea,
et operimentum tuum erunt vermes.
12 How did you come to fal from the heavens, Daystar, son of Dawn? How did you come to be thrown tothe ground, conqueror of nations?12 Quomodo cecidisti de cælo,
Lucifer, qui mane oriebaris ?
corruisti in terram,
qui vulnerabas gentes ?
13 You who used to think to yourself: I shal scale the heavens; higher than the stars of God I shall setmy throne. I shal sit on the Mount of Assembly far away to the north.13 Qui dicebas in corde tuo :
In cælum conscendam,
super astra Dei
exaltabo solium meum ;
sedebo in monte testamenti,
in lateribus aquilonis ;
14 I shal climb high above the clouds, I shal rival the Most High."14 ascendam super altitudinem nubium,
similis ero Altissimo ?
15 Now you have been flung down to Sheol, into the depths of the abyss!15 Verumtamen ad infernum detraheris,
in profundum laci.
16 'When they see you, they will scrutinise you and consider what you have become, "Is this the manwho made the world tremble, who overthrew kingdoms?16 Qui te viderint, ad te inclinabuntur,
teque prospicient :
Numquid iste est vir qui conturbavit terram,
qui concussit regna,
17 He made the world a desert, he level ed cities and never freed his prisoners to go home."17 qui posuit orbem desertum,
et urbes ejus destruxit,
vinctis ejus non aperuit carcerem ?
18 Al other kings of nations, al of them, lie honourably, each in his own tomb;18 Omnes reges gentium
universi dormierunt in gloria,
vir in domo sua ;
19 but you have been thrown away, unburied, like a loathsome branch, covered with heaps of the slainpierced by the sword who fal on the rocks of the abyss like trampled carrion.19 tu autem projectus es de sepulchro tuo,
quasi stirps inutilis pollutus,
et obvolutus cum his qui interfecti sunt gladio,
et descenderunt ad fundamenta laci,
quasi cadaver putridum.
20 'You wil not rejoin them in the grave, for you have brought your country to ruin and destroyed yourpeople. The offspring of the wicked leave no name behind them.20 Non habebis consortium, neque cum eis in sepultura ;
tu enim terram tuam disperdidisti,
tu populum tuum occidisti :
non vocabitur in æternum
semen pessimorum.
21 Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their father! Never again must they rise to conquer theworld and cover the face of the earth with their cities.21 Præparate filios ejus occisioni,
in iniquitate patrum suorum :
non consurgent, nec hæreditabunt terram,
neque implebunt faciem orbis civitatum.
22 'I wil rise against them, declares Yahweh Sabaoth, and deprive Babylon of name, remnant, offspringand posterity, declares Yahweh.22 Et consurgam super eos,
dicit Dominus exercituum ;
et perdam Babylonis nomen, et reliquias,
et germen, et progeniem, dicit Dominus ;
23 I shal turn it into the haunt of hedgehogs, a swamp. I shal sweep it with the broom of destruction,declares Yahweh Sabaoth.'23 et ponam eam in possessionem ericii,
et in paludes aquarum,
et scopabo eam in scopa terens,
dicit Dominus exercituum.
24 Yahweh Sabaoth has sworn it, 'Yes, what I have planned wil take place, what I have decided will beso:24 Juravit Dominus exercituum, dicens :
Si non, ut putavi, ita erit ;
et quomodo mente tractavi,
25 'I shal break Assyria in my country, I shal trample on him on my mountains. Then his yoke wil slip offthem, his burden wil slip from their shoulders.'25 sic eveniet :
ut conteram Assyrium in terra mea,
et in montibus meis conculcem eum ;
et auferetur ab eis jugum ejus,
et onus illius ab humero eorum tolletur.
26 This is the decision taken in defiance of the whole world; this, the hand outstretched in defiance of alnations.26 Hoc consilium quod cogitavi super omnem terram ;
et hæc est manus extenta super universas gentes.
27 Once Yahweh Sabaoth has decided, who wil stop him? Once he stretches out his hand, who canwithdraw it?27 Dominus enim exercituum decrevit ; et quis poterit infirmare ?
et manus ejus extenta ; et quis avertet eam ?
28 In the year Ahaz died came this proclamation:28 In anno quo mortuus est rex Achaz, factum est onus istud :
29 Al Philistia, do not rejoice because the rod which used to beat you is now broken, for the serpentstock wil produce a viper, its offspring wil be a flying dragon.29 Ne lætaris, Philisthæa omnis tu,
quoniam comminuta est virga percussoris tui ;
de radice enim colubri egredietur regulus,
et semen ejus absorbens volucrem.
30 While the first-born of the poor are grazing and the destitute are resting in safety, I shall make yourstock die of hunger and then slaughter what remains of you.30 Et pascentur primogeniti pauperum,
et pauperes fiducialiter requiescent ;
et interire faciam in fame radicem tuam,
et reliquias tuas interficiam.
31 Howl, gate! Shriek, city! Totter, all Philistia! For a smoke is coming from the north, and there are nodeserters in those battalions.31 Ulula, porta ; clama civitas ;
prostrata est Philisthæa omnis ;
ab aquilone enim fumus veniet,
et non est qui effugiet agmen ejus.
32 What reply wil be given then to the messengers of that nation? - That Yahweh founded Zion andthere the poor of his people will find refuge.32 Et quid respondebitur nuntiis gentis ?
Quia Dominus fundavit Sion,
et in ipso sperabunt pauperes populi ejus.
