The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem, which he received in the reigns ofUzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah kings of Judah.1 The vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Joatham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Listen, you heavens; earth, attend, for Yahweh is speaking, 'I have reared children and brought them up,but they have rebel ed against me.2 Listen, O heavens, and pay attention, O earth, for the Lord has spoken. I have nurtured and raised children, but they have spurned me.
The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master's crib; Israel does not know, my people do notunderstand.'3 An ox knows his owner, and a donkey knows the manger of his lord, but Israel has not known me, and my people have not understood.
Disaster, sinful nation, people weighed down with guilt, race of wrong-doers, perverted children! Theyhave abandoned Yahweh, despised the Holy One of Israel, they have turned away from him.4 Woe to a sinful nation, a people burdened by iniquity, a wicked offspring, accursed children. They have abandoned the Lord. They have blasphemed the Holy One of Israel. They been taken away backwards.
Where shal I strike you next, if you persist in treason? The whole head is sick, the whole heart isdiseased,5 For what reason shall I continue to strike you, as you increase transgressions? The entire head is feeble, and the entire heart is grieving.
from the sole of the foot to the head there is nothing healthy: only wounds, bruises and open sores notdressed, not bandaged, not soothed with ointment,6 From the sole of the foot, even to the top of the head, there is no soundness within. Wounds and bruises and swelling sores: these are not bandaged, nor treated with medicine, nor soothed with oil.
your country a desolation, your towns burnt down, your soil, foreigners lay it waste before your eyes, adesolation like devastation by foreigners.7 Your land is desolate. Your cities have been set ablaze. Foreigners devour your countryside in your sight, and it will become desolate, as if devastated by enemies.
The daughter of Zion is left like a shanty in a vineyard, like a shed in a cucumber field, like a citybesieged.8 And the daughter of Zion will be left behind, like an arbor in a vineyard, and like a shelter in a cucumber field, and like a city being laid to waste.
Had Yahweh Sabaoth not left us a few survivors, we should be like Sodom, we should be the same asGomorrah.9 If the Lord of hosts had not bequeathed us offspring, we would have been like Sodom, and we would have been comparable to Gomorrah.
Hear what Yahweh says, you rulers of Sodom; listen to what our God teaches, you people ofGomorrah.10 Listen to the Word of the Lord, you leaders of the people of Sodom. Listen closely to the law of our God, O people of Gomorrah.
'What are your endless sacrifices to me?' says Yahweh. 'I am sick of burnt offerings of rams and the fatof calves. I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.11 The multitude of your sacrifices, what is that to me, says the Lord? I am full. I do not desire holocausts of rams, nor the fat of fatlings, nor the blood of calves and of lambs and of he-goats.
When you come and present yourselves before me, who has asked you to trample through my courts?12 When you approach before my sight, who is it that requires these things from your hands, so that you would walk in my courts?
Bring no more futile cereal offerings, the smoke from them fil s me with disgust. New Moons, Sabbaths, assemblies -- I cannot endure solemnity combined with guilt.13 You should no longer offer sacrifice vain. Incense is an abomination to me. The new moons and the Sabbaths and the other feast days, I will not receive. Your gatherings are iniquitous.
Your New Moons and your meetings I utterly detest; to me they are a burden I am tired of bearing.14 My soul hates your days of proclamation and your solemnities. They have become bothersome to me. I labor to endure them.
When you stretch out your hands I turn my eyes away. You may multiply your prayers, I shal not belistening. Your hands are covered in blood,15 And so, when you extend your hands, I will avert my eyes from you. And when you multiply your prayers, I will not heed you. For your hands are full of blood.
wash, make yourselves clean. Take your wrong-doing out of my sight. Cease doing evil.16 Wash, become clean, take away the evil of your intentions from my eyes. Cease to act perversely.
Learn to do good, search for justice, discipline the violent, be just to the orphan, plead for the widow.17 Learn to do good. Seek judgment, support the oppressed, judge for the orphan, defend the widow.
'Come, let us talk this over,' says Yahweh. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shal be white assnow; though they are red as crimson, they shal be like wool.18 And then approach and accuse me, says the Lord. Then, if your sins are like scarlet, they shall be made white like snow; and if they are red like vermillion, they shall become white like wool.
If you are willing to obey, you shall eat the good things of the earth.19 If you are willing, and you listen to me, then you will eat the good things of the land.
But if you refuse and rebel, the sword shal eat you instead -- for Yahweh's mouth has spoken.'20 But if you are not willing, and you provoke me to anger, then the sword will devour you. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
The faithful city, what a harlot she has become! Zion, once ful of fair judgement, where saving justiceused to dwell, but now assassins!21 How has the faithful city, full of judgment, become a harlot? Justice lived in her, but now murderers.
Your silver has turned into dross, your wine is watered.22 Your silver has turned into dross. Your wine has been mixed with water.
Your princes are rebels, accomplices of brigands. Al of them greedy for presents and eager for bribes, they show no justice to the orphan, and the widow's cause never reaches them.23 Your leaders are unfaithful, the associates of thieves. They all love gifts; they pursue rewards. They do not judge for orphans, and the widow’s case is not brought before them.
Hence, the Lord Yahweh Sabaoth, the Mighty One of Israel, says this, 'Disaster, I shall get the better ofmy enemies, I shall avenge myself on my foes.24 Because of this, the Lord God of hosts, the Strength of Israel, says: Ah! I will be consoled over my enemies, and I will be vindicated from my adversaries.
'I shal turn my hand against you, I shal purge your dross as though with potash, I shal remove al youral oy.25 And I will turn my hand to you. And I will temper your dross unto purity, and I will take away all your tin.
'And I shal restore your judges as at first, your counsel ors as in bygone days, after which you wil becal ed City of Saving Justice, Faithful City.'26 And I will restore your judges, so that they will be as before, and your counselors as in times long past. After this, you shall be called the City of the Just, the Faithful City.
Zion wil be redeemed by fair judgement, and those who return, by saving justice.27 Zion will be redeemed in judgment, and they will lead her back to justice.
Rebels and sinners alike wil be destroyed, and those who abandon Yahweh wil perish.28 And he shall crush the accursed and sinners together. And those who have abandoned the Lord will be consumed.
How ashamed you wil be of the terebinths which gave you such delight; and how you wil blush for thegardens which you chose!29 For they shall be confounded because of the idols, to which they have sacrificed. And you shall be ashamed over the gardens that you chose,
For you wil be like a terebinth with faded leaves, like a garden without water;30 when you were like an oak with falling leaves, and like a garden without water.
the strong wil become like tinder, his work like the spark; both wil go up in flames together, with no oneto put them out.31 And your strength will be like the embers from stubble, and your work will be like a spark, and both will burn together, and there will be no one to extinguish it.
