Sirach 6

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 for a bad name will earn you shame and reproach, as happens to the double-talking sinner.	1 Non ti fare, invece d'amico, nemico del prossimo, perchè il malvagio avrà come sua parte obbrobrio e ignominia, e così ogni peccatore invidioso e doppio di lingua.
2 Do not get carried aloft on the wings of passion, for fear your strength tear itself apart like a bul ,	2 Non t'innalzare nei pensieri del tuo cuore come toro, chè la tua virtù non resti schiacciata dalla stoltezza,
3 and you devour your own foliage and destroy your own fruit and end by making yourself like a piece of dried-up wood.	3 ed essa non di vori le tue foglie, non disperda i tuoi frutti, e tu non rimanga come pianta secca in mezzo al deserto.
4 An evil temper destroys the person who has it and makes him the laughing-stock of his enemies.	4 L'anima malvagia rovinerà chi la possiede, lo renderà oggetto di allegrezza, pei suoi nemici, e lo condurrà alla sorte degli empi.
5 A kindly turn of speech attracts new friends, a courteous tongue invites many a friendly response.	5 La parola dolce moltiplica gli amici e ammansisce i nemici, e la lingua piena di grazia produce abbondanti frutti nell'uomo onesto.
6 Let your acquaintances be many, but for advisers choose one out of a thousand.	6 Molti siano quelli che vivono con te in ottimi rapporti, ma tuo confidente ve ne sia uno solo fra mille.
7 If you want to make a friend, take him on trial, and do not be in a hurry to trust him;	7 Se hai un amico, fàllo tuo nella prova, e non ti fidare troppo facilmente di lui,
8 for one kind of friend is so only when it suits him but wil not stand by you in your day of trouble.	8 perché v'è chi è amico quando gli torna comodo, e non seguita nel giorno della sventura;
9 Another kind of friend wil fal out with you and to your dismay make your quarrel public,	9 v'è chi di amico si cambia in nemico, e v'è l'amico che metterà fuori odio, risse e insulti.
10 and a third kind of friend wil share your table, but not stand by you in your day of trouble:	10 Vi sono degli amici commensali a tavola che spariscono nel giorno della necessità.
11 when you are doing well he wil be your second self, ordering your servants about;	11 Se l'amico resta costante, sarà come tuo eguale, e potrà porre libera mente le mani nelle cose di casa tua.
12 but, if disaster befal s you, he wil recoil from you and keep out of your way.	12 Se egli si umilia dinanzi a te e si ritira dalla tua presenza, avrai per buona e unanime la sua amicizia.
13 Keep well clear of your enemies, and be wary of your friends.	13 Allontanati dai tuoi nemici o guardati dai tuoi amici.
14 A loyal friend is a powerful defence: whoever finds one has indeed found a treasure.	14 L'amico fedele è una forte protezione, e chi lo trova ha trovato un tesoro.
15 A loyal friend is something beyond price, there is no measuring his worth.	15 Nulla può esser paragonato ad un amico fedele e l'oro e l'argento non possono esser messi sulla bilancia colla eccellenza della sua fedeltà.
16 A loyal friend is the elixir of life, and those who fear the Lord will find one.	16 L'amico fedele è il balsamo della vita e dell'immortalità, e quelli che temono il Signore lo troveranno.
17 Whoever fears the Lord makes true friends, for as a person is, so is his friend too.	17 Chi teme il Signore godrà di buona amicizia, perchè il suo amico sarà simile a lui.
18 My child, from your earliest youth choose instruction, and til your hair is white you wil keep findingwisdom.	18 Figlio, fin dalla tua giovinezza abbraccia la disciplina, e fino alla vecchiaia troverai la sapienza.
19 Like ploughman and sower, cultivate her and wait for her fine harvest, for in tilling her you wil toil a littlewhile, but very soon you wil be eating her crops.	19 Accostati ad essa come chi ara e semina, ed aspettane i buoni frutti.
20 How very harsh she is to the undisciplined! The senseless does not stay with her for long:	20 Ti affaticherai un poco nel coltivarla, ma presto ne mangerai i frutti.
21 she wil weigh as heavily on the senseless as a touchstone and such a person will lose no time inthrowing her off;	21 Quanto riesce oltremodo ardua la sapienza agli ignoranti! Chi è senza cuore e non rimarrà con lei.
22 for Wisdom is true to her name, she is not accessible to many.	22 Ne faranno la prova come del peso d'una pietra, e non tarderanno a gettarla per terra.
23 Listen, my child, and take my advice, do not reject my counsel:	23 Perchè la sapienza che ammaestra, secondo il suo nome, non è conosciuta da molti; ma in quelli che la conoscono essa resta fino alla presenza di Dio.
24 put your feet into her fetters, and your neck into her collar;	24 Ascolta, figliolo, e abbraccia il consiglio dell'intelligenza, e non rigettare il mio consiglio.
25 offer your shoulder to her burden, do not be impatient of her bonds;	25 Metti i tuoi piedi nei ceppi di lei e il tuo collo nelle sue catene,
26 court her with al your soul, and with al your might keep in her ways;	26 piega le tue spalle e portala, e non aver in uggia i suoi legami.
27 search for her, track her down: she wil reveal herself; once you hold her, do not let her go.	27 Accostati a lei con tutto l'animo, e con tutte le forze segui le sue vie.
28 For in the end you wil find rest in her and she wil take the form of joy for you:	28 Cercala, ed essa ti si manifesterà, e quando la possiedi non l'abbandonare.
29 her fetters you will find a mighty defence, her col ars, a precious necklace.	29 Perchè al la fine troverai in lei riposo ed essa diventerà il tuo diletto.
30 Her yoke wil be a golden ornament, and her bonds be purple ribbons;	30 E i suoi ceppi saranno tua valida protezione e base di virtù, e la sua catena una veste di gloria.
31 you wil wear her like a robe of honour, you wil put her on like a crown of joy.	31 Infatti in lei è l'onore della vita, e le sue catene sono fasce salutari.
32 If you wish it, my child, you can be taught; apply yourself, and you will become intel igent.	32 Ti rivestirai di lei come di veste gloriosa, e la porrai sopra il tuo capo come corona di gioia.
33 If you love listening, you will learn, if you pay attention, you will become wise.	33 Figlio mio, se mi starai attento, imparerai, e se applicherai la tua mente, sarai saggio.
34 Attend the gathering of elders; if there is a wise man there, attach yourself to him.	34 Se porgerai il tuo orecchio, riceverai la dottrina, e se amerai ascoltare, sarai sapiente.
35 Listen willingly to any discourse coming from God, do not let wise proverbs escape you.	35 Frequenta la compagnia degli anziani prudenti, unisciti di cuore alla loro saggezza, per poter ascoltare tutto ciò che si dice di Dio; e non ti sfuggano le sentenze degne di lode.
36 If you see a man of understanding, visit him early, let your feet wear out his doorstep.	36 Se tu vedi un uomo di buon senso, va di buon mattino a trovarlo, e il tuo piede consumi i gradini della sua porta.
37 Reflect on the injunctions of the Lord, busy yourself at al times with his commandments. He wilstrengthen your mind, and the wisdom you desire will be granted you.	37 I tuoi pensieri sian fìssi nei precetti di Dio, medita di continuo i suoi comandamenti, ed Egli ti darà un cuore, e ti sarà concessa la sapienza da te bramata.
