NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 for a bad name will earn you shame and reproach, as happens to the double-talking sinner.	1 porque la mala fama heredará vergüenza y oprobio: esta es la suerte del pecador que habla con doblez
2 Do not get carried aloft on the wings of passion, for fear your strength tear itself apart like a bul ,	2 No te dejes arrastrar por el capricho de tu pasión, para no ser despedazado como un toro:
3 and you devour your own foliage and destroy your own fruit and end by making yourself like a piece of dried-up wood.	3 devorarías tus ramas, perderías tus frutos y de convertirías en un tronco seco.
4 An evil temper destroys the person who has it and makes him the laughing-stock of his enemies.	4 Una pasión violenta pierde al que la tiene y hace que sus enemigos se rían de él.
5 A kindly turn of speech attracts new friends, a courteous tongue invites many a friendly response.	5 Las palabras dulces multiplican los amigos y un lenguaje amable favorece las buenas relaciones.
6 Let your acquaintances be many, but for advisers choose one out of a thousand.	6 Que sean muchos los que te saludan, pero el que te aconseja, sea uno entre mil.
7 If you want to make a friend, take him on trial, and do not be in a hurry to trust him;	7 Si ganas un amigo, gánalo en la prueba, y no le des confianza demasiado pronto.
8 for one kind of friend is so only when it suits him but wil not stand by you in your day of trouble.	8 Porque hay amigos ocasionales, que dejan de serlo en el día de aflicción.
9 Another kind of friend wil fal out with you and to your dismay make your quarrel public,	9 Hay amigos que se vuelven enemigos, y para avergonzarte, revelan el motivo de la disputa.
10 and a third kind of friend wil share your table, but not stand by you in your day of trouble:	10 Hay amigos que comparten tu mesa y dejan de serlo en el día de la aflicción.
11 when you are doing well he wil be your second self, ordering your servants about;	11 Mientras te vaya bien, serán como tú mismo y hablarán abiertamente con tus servidores;
12 but, if disaster befal s you, he wil recoil from you and keep out of your way.	12 pero si te va mal, se pondrán contra ti y se esconderán de tu vista.
13 Keep well clear of your enemies, and be wary of your friends.	13 Sepárate de tus enemigos y sé precavido con tus amigos.
14 A loyal friend is a powerful defence: whoever finds one has indeed found a treasure.	14 Un amigo fiel no tiene precio, no hay manera de estimar su valor.
15 A loyal friend is something beyond price, there is no measuring his worth.	15 Un amigo fiel no tiene precio, no hay manera de estimar su valor.
16 A loyal friend is the elixir of life, and those who fear the Lord will find one.	16 Un amigo fiel es un bálsamo de vida, que encuentran los que temen al Señor.
17 Whoever fears the Lord makes true friends, for as a person is, so is his friend too.	17 El que teme al Señor encamina bien su amistad, porque como es él, así también será su amigo.
18 My child, from your earliest youth choose instruction, and til your hair is white you wil keep findingwisdom.	18 Hijo mío, desde tu juventud, busca la instrucción, y hasta en tu vejez, encontrarás la sabiduría.
19 Like ploughman and sower, cultivate her and wait for her fine harvest, for in tilling her you wil toil a littlewhile, but very soon you wil be eating her crops.	19 Acércate a ella como el que ara y el que siembra, y espera pacientemente sus buenos frutos: al cultivarla, te fatigarás un poco, pero muy pronto comerás de sus productos.
20 How very harsh she is to the undisciplined! The senseless does not stay with her for long:	20 ¡Qué dura les parece a los ignorantes! El insensato no se mantiene fiel a ella:
21 she wil weigh as heavily on the senseless as a touchstone and such a person will lose no time inthrowing her off;	21 ella lo oprime como una piedra pesada y no tarda en sacársela de encima.
22 for Wisdom is true to her name, she is not accessible to many.	22 Porque la sabiduría hace honor a su nombre y no se manifiesta a muchos.
23 Listen, my child, and take my advice, do not reject my counsel:	23 Escucha, hijo mío, acepta mi doctrina y no rechaces mi consejo.
24 put your feet into her fetters, and your neck into her collar;	24 Mete tus pies en sus cepos y tu cuello en su collar.
25 offer your shoulder to her burden, do not be impatient of her bonds;	25 Doblega tus espaldas y carga con ella, y no te irrites por sus cadenas.
26 court her with al your soul, and with al your might keep in her ways;	26 Acércate a ella con toda tu alma y permanece en su camino con todas tus fuerzas.
27 search for her, track her down: she wil reveal herself; once you hold her, do not let her go.	27 Sigue sus huellas y búscala: la sabiduría se te dará a conocer, y una vez que la poseas, no la dejes,
28 For in the end you wil find rest in her and she wil take the form of joy for you:	28 porque al fin encontrarás en ella el descanso y ella se convertirá en tu alegría.
29 her fetters you will find a mighty defence, her col ars, a precious necklace.	29 Sus cepos serán un refugio poderoso y sus collares, un manto de gloria.
30 Her yoke wil be a golden ornament, and her bonds be purple ribbons;	30 Su yugo será un adorno de oro y sus cadenas, un tejido de jacinto.
31 you wil wear her like a robe of honour, you wil put her on like a crown of joy.	31 Te revestirás de ella como de un manto de gloria y te la ceñirás como una corona de júbilo.
32 If you wish it, my child, you can be taught; apply yourself, and you will become intel igent.	32 Si quieres, hijo mío, serás instruido, y si pones empeño, sabrás desenvolverte.
33 If you love listening, you will learn, if you pay attention, you will become wise.	33 Si te gusta escuchar, aprenderás, y si prestas atención, llegarás a ser sabio.
34 Attend the gathering of elders; if there is a wise man there, attach yourself to him.	34 Frecuenta las reuniones de los ancianos y si hay algún sabio, adhiérete a él.
35 Listen willingly to any discourse coming from God, do not let wise proverbs escape you.	35 Procura escuchar todo lo que se refiera a Dios y que no se te escapen las máximas profundas.
36 If you see a man of understanding, visit him early, let your feet wear out his doorstep.	36 Si ves a un hombre inteligente, ve en seguida hacia él y que tus pies gasten el umbral de su puerta.
37 Reflect on the injunctions of the Lord, busy yourself at al times with his commandments. He wilstrengthen your mind, and the wisdom you desire will be granted you.	37 Examina detenidamente los preceptos del Señor y medita sin cesar sus mandamientos: él mismo afirmará tu corazón y te dará la sabiduría que deseas.
