Sirach 13

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 Whoever touches pitch will be defiled, and anyone who associates with the proud wil come to be likethem.	1 Chi tocca la pece, si sporca di pece, e a chi conversa col superbo, si attaccherà la superbia.
2 Do not try to carry a burden too heavy for you, do not associate with someone more powerful andwealthy than yourself. Why put the clay pot next to the iron cauldron? It wil only break when they bang againsteach other.	2 Si mette un gran peso addosso chi fa lega con uno da più di lui. E non ti associare con chi è più ricco di te.
3 The rich does wrong and takes a high line; the poor is wronged and has to beg for pardon.	3 Come staranno insieme un vaso di ferro, e uno di terra, il quale quando venga a urtare coll'altro sarà messo in pezzi?
4 If you are useful the rich will exploit you, if you go bankrupt he wil desert you.	4 Il ricco farà ingiustizia, e fremerà; e il povero maltrattato starà zitto.
5 Are you well off? - he wil live with you, he will clean you out without a single qualm.	5 Se tu gli farai de' presenti, ti accoglierà; se non avrai che dare, ti abbandonerà.
6 Does he need you? - he will hoodwink you, smile at you and raise your hopes; he wil speak politely toyou and say, 'Is there anything you need?'	6 Se hai qualche cosa, banchetterà teco, e ti smugnerà, e non avrà compassione di te.
7 He will make you feel smal at his dinner parties and, having cleaned you out two or three times over,wil end by laughing at you. Afterwards, when he sees you, he will avoid you and shake his head about you.	7 Se avrà bisogno di te, ti gabberà, e con viso ridente ti darà delle speranze, ti prometterà monti di oro, e dirà: di che hai bisogno.
8 Take care you are not hoodwinked and thus humiliated through your own stupidity.	8 E ti confonderà co' suoi desinari fino a tanto, che in due, o tre volte ti rifinirà, e all'ultimo si burlerà di te, e poi vedendoti ti volterà le spalle, e scuoterà il capo contro di te.
9 When an influential person invites you, show reluctance, and he will press his invitation all the more.	9 Umiliati a Dio, e aspetta la sua mano.
10 Do not thrust yourself forward, in case you are pushed aside, but do not stand aloof, or you will beoverlooked.	10 Bada, che sedotto tu non ti umilj stoltamente.
11 Do not affect to treat him as an equal, do not trust his flow of words; since all this talking is expresslymeant to test you, under cover of geniality he wil be weighing you up.	11 Guardati dall'esser umile in tua saggezza, affinchè umiliato che sarai, non sii sedotto a far cose da stolto.
12 Pitiless is anyone who retails gossip; he wil not spare you either blows or chains.	12 Se un potente ti chiama a se, tirati indietro; conciossiachè per questo appunto egli ti chiamerà, e richiamerà,
13 Be wary, take very great care, because you are walking with your own downfal .	13 Non essere importuno per non esser cacciato via, e non tenerti tanto indietro da esser dimenticato.
14	14 Nol trattenere per parlare con lui come con un eguale, e non ti fidare delle molte parole di lui; perocché col farti parlar molto ti tenterà, e come per giuoco ti interrogherà per cavare da te i tuoi secreti.
15 Every living thing loves its own sort, and every man his fel ow.	15 L'animo fiero di lui terrà conto di tue parole, e non si guarderà a farti del male, e a metterti in prigione.
16 Every creature mixes with its kind, and human beings stick to their own sort.	16 Bada a te, e sta molto attento a quello, che ti senti dire; perché tu cammini sull'orlo del tuo precipizio.
17 How can wolf and lamb agree? - Just so with sinner and devout.	17 Ma tali cose ascoltando quasi in sogno, risvegliati.
18 What peace can there be between hyena and dog? And what peace between rich and poor?	18 Per tutto il tempo di tua vita ama Dio, e invocalo per tua salvezza
19 Wild desert donkeys are the prey of lions; so too, the poor is the quarry of the rich.	19 Ogni animale ama il suo simile, e così ogni uomo il suo prossimo.
20 The proud thinks humility abhorrent; so too, the rich abominates the poor.	20 Tutte le bestie fan società colle loro simili; cosi ogni uomo si unirà col suo simile.
21 When the rich stumbles he is supported by friends; when the poor fal s, his friends push him away.	21 Se il lupo potrà qualche volta aver società coll'agnello, l'avrà anche il peccatore col giusto.
22 When the rich slips, there are many hands to catch him, if he talks nonsense he is congratulated. Thepoor slips, and is blamed for it, he may talk good sense, but no room is made for him.	22 Qual relazione tra un uomo santo, e un cane? E qual unione tral ricco, ed il povero?
23 The rich speaks and everyone stops talking, and then they praise his discourse to the skies. The poorspeaks and people say, 'Who is this?' and if he stumbles, they trip him up yet more.	23 Preda del lione è l'asino salvatico nel deserto, e pastura de' ricchi sono i poveri.
24 Wealth is good where there is no sin, poverty is evil, the godless say.	24 Come il superbo ha in abbominio l'umiltà, còsi il ricco ha il povero in avversione.
25 The heart moulds a person's expression whether for better or worse.	25 Il ricco, che traballa è sostenuto da suoi amici; ma il povero, caduto che è, vien cacciato via anche da' familiari.
26 Happy heart, cheerful expression; but wearisome work, inventing proverbs.	26 Il ricco, che ha errato ha molti, che lo sostengono: egli ha parlato con arroganza, e quelli lo giustificano.
	27 Ma il povero, che fu gabbato, è ancor rampognato: parla sensatamente, e non gli è dato retta.
	28 Il ricco parla, e tutti stan cheti, e innalzano fino alle nuvole le sue parole.
	29 Parla il povero, e quelli dicono: chi è costui, e se inciampa lo getteranno per terra.
	30 Buone son le ricchezze, le quali non hanno peccato sulla coscienza: ma pessima è la povertà a detta dell'empio.
	31 Il cuore dell'uomo cangia il volto di lui o in bene, o in male.
	32 Il buon viso argomento di buon cuore lo troverai difficilmente, e con pena.
