1 [The Law, the Prophets,and the other writers succeeding them have passed on to us great lessons,inconsequence of which Israel must be commended for learning and wisdom. Furthermore, it is a duty, not only toacquire learning by reading,but also, once having acquired it, to make oneself of use to people outsideby whatone can say or write. My grandfather Jesus, having long devoted himself to the readingof the Law,theProphetsand other books of the Fathersand having become very learned in them,himself decided to writesomething on the subjects of learning and wisdom,so that people who wanted to learn might, by themselvesaccepting these disciplines,learn how better to live according to the Law.You are therefore askedto read thisbookwith good wil and attentionand to show indulgencein those places where, notwithstanding our efforts atinterpretation, we may seemto have failed to give an adequate rendering of this or that expression;the fact is thatthere is no equivalentfor things original y written in Hebrew when it is a question of translating them into anotherlanguage;what is more,the Law itself, the Prophetsand the other booksdiffer considerably in translation fromwhat appears in the original text. It was in the thirty-eighth year of the late King Euergetesthat, coming to Egyptand spending some time here,and finding life here consistent with a high degree of wisdom,I became convincedof an immediate duty to apply myself in my turn with pains and diligence to the translation of the book thatfol ows;and I spent much time and learning on itin the course of this period,to complete the work and to publishthe bookfor the benefit of those too who, domiciled abroad, wish to study,to reform their behaviour, and to live asthe Law requires.] All wisdom comes from the Lord, she is with him for ever.	1 Ogni sapienza vien dal Signore Dio, ed è stata sempre con lui, anche avanti i secoli.
2 The sands of the sea, the drops of rain, the days of eternity -- who can count them?	2 Chi ha contato l'arena del mare, le gocce della pioggia, i giorni dei secoli? L'altezza del cielo, l'ampiezza della terra, la profondità dell'abisso chi l'ha misurata?
3 The height of the sky, the breadth of the earth, the depth of the abyss -- who can explore them?	3 La sapienza di Dio, che è avanti tutte le cose, chi l'ha penetrata?
4 Wisdom was created before everything, prudent understanding subsists from remotest ages.	4 La sapienza fu creata prima di tutte le cose, e la prudente intelligenza esiste da tutti i tempi.
5	5 Fonte della Sapienza è il Verbo di Dio in cielo, e le sue vie sono i comandamenti eterni.
6 For whom has the root of wisdom ever been uncovered? Her resourceful ways, who knows them?	6 La radice della sapienza a chi mai fu rivelata? E le sue finezze chi le conobbe?
7	7 La disciplina della sapienza a chi fu rivelata e manifestata? E le molte sue vie chi le comprese?
8 One only is wise, terrible indeed,	8 Uno solo: l'Altissimo creatore Onnipotente, Re potente e oltremodo terribile, assiso sul suo trono, Dio dominatore.
9 seated on his throne, the Lord. It was he who created, inspected and weighed her up, and then pouredher out on al his works-	9 Egli l'ha creata nello Spirito Santo l'ha veduta, l'ha numerata, l'ha misurata,
10 as much to each living creature as he chose -- bestowing her on those who love him.	10 l'ha diffusa in tutte le sue opere, sopra ogni mortale in proporzione del dono che ne ha fatto, e l'ha donata a quelli che lo amano.
11 The fear of the Lord is glory and pride, happiness and a crown of joyfulness.	11 Il timor del Signore è una gloria e un vanto, è gioia e corona d'allegrezza.
12 The fear of the Lord gladdens the heart, giving happiness, joy and long life.	12 Il timor del Signore allieterà il cuore, darà letizia, contento e lunga vita.
13 For those who fear the Lord, all wil end wel : on their dying day they wil be blessed.	13 Chi teme il Signore si troverà bene negli ultimi momenti, e nel giorno della sua morte sarà benedetto.
14 The basis of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she was created with the faithful in their mothers' womb;	14 L'amor di Dio è gloriosa sapienza.
15 she has made a home in the human race, an age -- old foundation, and to their descendants wil shefaithful y cling.	15 Quelli ai quali essa si mostra l'amano appena l'han vista e ne han conosciute le grandi opere.
16 The ful ness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she intoxicates them with her fruits;	16 Il principio della sapienza è il timor del Signore, che coi fedeli è creato nel seno materno, accompagna le donne elette, e si riconosce nei giusti e nei fedeli.
17 she fil s their entire house with treasures and their storerooms with her produce.	17 Il timore del Signore è la religiosità della scienza.
18 The crown of wisdom is to fear the Lord: she makes peace and health flourish.	18 La religione custodisce e giustifica il cuore e gli dona giocondità e contento.
19 The Lord has seen and assessed her, he has showered down knowledge and intelligence, he hasexalted the renown of those who possess her.	19 Chi teme il Signore sarà felice e sarà benedetto nel giorno della sua morte.
20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and her branches are long life.	20 La pienezza della sapienza sta nel temere il Signore.
21	21 Essa ricolma dei suoi frutti, riempie tutta la casa dell'uomo dei suoi prodotti, e i magazzini dei suoi tesori.
22 The rage of the wicked cannot put him in the right, for the weight of his rage is his downfal .	22 Il timor del Signore è la corona della sapienza; riempie di pace e di frutti di salute.
23 A patient person puts up with things until the right time comes: but his joy wil break out in the end.	23 Egli conosce la sapienza e la calcola: l'uno e l'altra son doni di Dio.
24 Til the time comes he keeps his thoughts to himself, and many a lip will affirm how wise he is.	24 La sapienza di stribuisce scienza e intelligenza prudente, ed esalta la gloria di chi la possiede.
25 Wisdom's treasuries contain the maxims of knowledge, the sinner, however, holds piety in abhorrence.	25 Radice della sapienza è il timor del Signore, i suoi rami son di lunga durata.
26 If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will bestow it on you.	26 Nei tesori della scienza v'è l'intelligenza e la religiosità della scienza, ma per i peccatori la sapienza è oggetto d'esecrazione.
27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction, and what pleases him is faithfulness and gentleness.	27 Il timor del Signore scaccia il peccato.
28 Do not stand out against fear of the Lord, do not practise it with a double heart.	28 Colui che è senza timore non potrà esser giustificato, perchè la foga della sua collera ne sarà la rovina.
29 Do not act a part in public, keep watch over your lips.	29 Il paziente avrà da soffrire per un po' di tempo, e poi gli sarà resa la gioia.
30 Do not grow too high and mighty, for fear you fal and cover yourself in disgrace; for the Lord wouldthen reveal your secrets and overthrow you before the whole community for not having practised fear of the Lordand for having a heart ful of deceit.	30 Il buon senso per un pezzo terrà chiuse le parole dell'uomo, ma le labbra di molti ne loderanno la prudenza.
	31 Nei tesori della sapienza vi son le massime istruttive;
	32 ma la pietà verso Dio è in abbominio presso il peccatore.
	33 Figliolo, se desideri la sapienza, conserva la giustizia, e Dio te la darà.
	34 Chè il timore del Signore è sapienza e disciplina, e ciò che piace a lui
	35 è la fede e la mansuetudine. Egli ne riempirà i tesori.
	36 Guardati dal non credere al timore del Signore, e dall'accostarti a lui con cuore doppio.
	37 Non essere ipocrita nel cospetto degli uomini, e non esser di scandalo coi tuoi labbri.
	38 veglia su di essi, per non cadere e per non tirarti addosso l'infamia.
	39 Chè Dio non riveli ciò che tu nascondi, e non ti conqui da in mezzo all'assemblea,
	40 per esserti accostato con malignità al Signore, con cuore pieno d'in ganno e di frode.
