1 [The Law, the Prophets,and the other writers succeeding them have passed on to us great lessons,inconsequence of which Israel must be commended for learning and wisdom. Furthermore, it is a duty, not only toacquire learning by reading,but also, once having acquired it, to make oneself of use to people outsideby whatone can say or write. My grandfather Jesus, having long devoted himself to the readingof the Law,theProphetsand other books of the Fathersand having become very learned in them,himself decided to writesomething on the subjects of learning and wisdom,so that people who wanted to learn might, by themselvesaccepting these disciplines,learn how better to live according to the Law.You are therefore askedto read thisbookwith good wil and attentionand to show indulgencein those places where, notwithstanding our efforts atinterpretation, we may seemto have failed to give an adequate rendering of this or that expression;the fact is thatthere is no equivalentfor things original y written in Hebrew when it is a question of translating them into anotherlanguage;what is more,the Law itself, the Prophetsand the other booksdiffer considerably in translation fromwhat appears in the original text. It was in the thirty-eighth year of the late King Euergetesthat, coming to Egyptand spending some time here,and finding life here consistent with a high degree of wisdom,I became convincedof an immediate duty to apply myself in my turn with pains and diligence to the translation of the book thatfol ows;and I spent much time and learning on itin the course of this period,to complete the work and to publishthe bookfor the benefit of those too who, domiciled abroad, wish to study,to reform their behaviour, and to live asthe Law requires.] All wisdom comes from the Lord, she is with him for ever.	1 Ogni sapienza è da Dio Signore, e fu mai sempre con lui, ed ella è prima de' secoli.
2 The sands of the sea, the drops of rain, the days of eternity -- who can count them?	2 Chi ha contata l'arena del mare, e le gocce della pioggia, e i giorni del secolo? Chi ha misurata l'altezza del cielo, e l'ampiezza della terra, e la profondita dell'abisso?
3 The height of the sky, the breadth of the earth, the depth of the abyss -- who can explore them?	3 E chi è, dir abbia compresa la sapienza di Dio, la quale a tutte le cose va avanti?
4 Wisdom was created before everything, prudent understanding subsists from remotest ages.	4 La sapienza fa creata la prima di tutte le cose, e ab eterno la prudente intelligenza.
5	5 Fonte della sapienza il verbo di Dio lassù nell'alto, e le sue vie (sono) gli eterni comandamenti.
6 For whom has the root of wisdom ever been uncovered? Her resourceful ways, who knows them?	6 La radice della sapienza a chi fu mai rivelata? e chi conobbe le sue finezze.
7	7 La disciplina della sapienza a chi fu ella mai rivelata, e manifestata? E chi fu delle molte vie di lei comprendesse?
8 One only is wise, terrible indeed,	8 Il solo Altissimo Creatore onnipotente, e Re grande, e sommamente terribile, che siede sopra il suo Trono, ed è Dio Signore;
9 seated on his throne, the Lord. It was he who created, inspected and weighed her up, and then pouredher out on al his works-	9 Egli la creò per Ispirito santo, e la conobbe, e la calcolò, e la misurò.
10 as much to each living creature as he chose -- bestowing her on those who love him.	10 E la sparse sopra tutte le opere sue, e sopra tutti gli animali secondo la misura da lui stabilita, e la diede a quelli, che lo amano.
11 The fear of the Lord is glory and pride, happiness and a crown of joyfulness.	11 Il timore del Signore è gloria, e vanto, e letizia, e corona trionfale.
12 The fear of the Lord gladdens the heart, giving happiness, joy and long life.	12 Il timor del Signore sarà la dilettazione del cuore, e apporterà allegrezza, e gaudio, e lunghezza di giorni.
13 For those who fear the Lord, all wil end wel : on their dying day they wil be blessed.	13 Chi teme il Signore sarà beato nel fine, e nel giorno di sua morte avrà benedizione.
14 The basis of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she was created with the faithful in their mothers' womb;	14 La dilezione di Dio ell'è gloriosa sapienza.
15 she has made a home in the human race, an age -- old foundation, and to their descendants wil shefaithful y cling.	15 E quelli, a' quali ella si da a vedere, la amano tosto chè l'hanno veduta, e inconsiderando le sue grandi opere.
16 The ful ness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she intoxicates them with her fruits;	16 Principio della sapienza egli è il timor del Signore, e questo co' fedeli è creato insieme nel seno della lor madre, e le elette donne accompagna, e ne' giusti, e fedeli si fa conoscere.
17 she fil s their entire house with treasures and their storerooms with her produce.	17 Il timor del Signore è scienza religiosa.
18 The crown of wisdom is to fear the Lord: she makes peace and health flourish.	18 La religione custodisce, e giustifica il cuore, ella o apportatrice di letizia, e di gaudio.
19 The Lord has seen and assessed her, he has showered down knowledge and intelligence, he hasexalted the renown of those who possess her.	19 Chi teme il Signore sarà felice, e nel giorno di sua morte sarà benedetto.
20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and her branches are long life.	20 La pienezza della sapienza sta nel temere Dio, ed ella ricolma l'uomo de' frutti suoi.
21	21 Ella riempie tutta la casa di lui de' suoi effetti, e tutte le sue celle de' suoi tesori.
22 The rage of the wicked cannot put him in the right, for the weight of his rage is his downfal .	22 Il timor del Signore ha corona di sapienza, e da piena pace, e frutti di salute:
23 A patient person puts up with things until the right time comes: but his joy wil break out in the end.	23 Egli conosce la sapienza, e la calcola, e l'uno, e l'altra sono doni di Dio.
24 Til the time comes he keeps his thoughts to himself, and many a lip will affirm how wise he is.	24 La sapienza compartisce la scienza, e l'intelligenza prudente, e innalza in gloria quelli, che la posseggono.
25 Wisdom's treasuries contain the maxims of knowledge, the sinner, however, holds piety in abhorrence.	25 Radice della sapienza è il timor del Signore, e i rami di lui sono di lunga vita.
26 If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will bestow it on you.	26 Ne' tesori della sapienza sta la intelligenza, e in scienza religiosa: ma presso de' peccatori è in esecrazione la sapienza.
27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction, and what pleases him is faithfulness and gentleness.	27 Il timor del Signore scaccia il peccato:
28 Do not stand out against fear of the Lord, do not practise it with a double heart.	28 Conciossiachè colui, che è senza timore non potrà esser giusto; perocché la furiosa sua iracondia è sua mina.
29 Do not act a part in public, keep watch over your lips.	29 Per un tempo avrà da soffrire il paziente, e di poi gli sarà renduta la consolazione.
30 Do not grow too high and mighty, for fear you fal and cover yourself in disgrace; for the Lord wouldthen reveal your secrets and overthrow you before the whole community for not having practised fear of the Lordand for having a heart ful of deceit.	30 L'uomo sensato per un certo tempo terrà chiuse in seno le sue parole; e le labbra di molti loderanno la sua prudenza.
	31 Ne' tesori della sapienza sono le massime di disciplina.
	32 Ma il peccatore ha in avversione la pietà.
	33 Figliuolo, se tu desideri la sapienza, osserva i comandamenti, e Dio te la darà;
	34 Imperocché dal timor del Signore viene la scienza, e la disciplina, e quella, che a lui è accetta,
	35 La fede, e la mansuetudine; e chi le ha, sarà ricolmo da lui di tesori.
	36 Guardati dall'essere ribelle al timor del Signore, e non appressarti a lui con cuor doppio.
	37 Non essere ipocrita nel cospetto degli uomini, e non esser cagion di rovina a te stesso colle tue labbra;
	38 Ma custodiscile per non cadere, per non tirarti addosso l'infamia.
	39 E perché Dio non manifesti li tuoi segreti, e ti conquida in mezzo alla Chiesa.
	40 Per esserti appressato al Signore con malignità, mentre il tuo cuore è pieno d'inganno, e di fraude.
