NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 [The Law, the Prophets,and the other writers succeeding them have passed on to us great lessons,inconsequence of which Israel must be commended for learning and wisdom. Furthermore, it is a duty, not only toacquire learning by reading,but also, once having acquired it, to make oneself of use to people outsideby whatone can say or write. My grandfather Jesus, having long devoted himself to the readingof the Law,theProphetsand other books of the Fathersand having become very learned in them,himself decided to writesomething on the subjects of learning and wisdom,so that people who wanted to learn might, by themselvesaccepting these disciplines,learn how better to live according to the Law.You are therefore askedto read thisbookwith good wil and attentionand to show indulgencein those places where, notwithstanding our efforts atinterpretation, we may seemto have failed to give an adequate rendering of this or that expression;the fact is thatthere is no equivalentfor things original y written in Hebrew when it is a question of translating them into anotherlanguage;what is more,the Law itself, the Prophetsand the other booksdiffer considerably in translation fromwhat appears in the original text. It was in the thirty-eighth year of the late King Euergetesthat, coming to Egyptand spending some time here,and finding life here consistent with a high degree of wisdom,I became convincedof an immediate duty to apply myself in my turn with pains and diligence to the translation of the book thatfol ows;and I spent much time and learning on itin the course of this period,to complete the work and to publishthe bookfor the benefit of those too who, domiciled abroad, wish to study,to reform their behaviour, and to live asthe Law requires.] All wisdom comes from the Lord, she is with him for ever.	1 Toda a sabedoria vem do Senhor Deus, ela sempre esteve com ele. Ela existe antes de todos os séculos.
2 The sands of the sea, the drops of rain, the days of eternity -- who can count them?	2 Quem pode contar os grãos de areia do mar, as gotas de chuva, os dias do tempo? Quem pode medir a altura do céu, a extensão da terra, a profundidade do abismo?
3 The height of the sky, the breadth of the earth, the depth of the abyss -- who can explore them?	3 Quem pode penetrar a sabedoria divina, anterior a tudo?
4 Wisdom was created before everything, prudent understanding subsists from remotest ages.	4 A sabedoria foi criada antes de todas as coisas, a inteligência prudente existe antes dos séculos!
5	5 O verbo de Deus nos céus é fonte de sabedoria, seus caminhos são os mandamentos eternos.
6 For whom has the root of wisdom ever been uncovered? Her resourceful ways, who knows them?	6 A quem foi revelada a raiz da sabedoria? Quem pode discernir os seus artifícios?
7	7 A quem foi mostrada e revelada a ciência da sabedoria? Quem pode compreender a multiplicidade de seus caminhos?
8 One only is wise, terrible indeed,	8 Somente o Altíssimo, criador onipotente, rei poderoso e infinitamente temível, Deus dominador, sentado no seu trono;
9 seated on his throne, the Lord. It was he who created, inspected and weighed her up, and then pouredher out on al his works-	9 foi ele quem a criou no Espírito Santo, quem a viu, numerada e medida;
10 as much to each living creature as he chose -- bestowing her on those who love him.	10 ele a espargiu em todas as suas obras, sobre toda a carne, à medida que a repartiu, e deu-a àqueles que a amavam.
11 The fear of the Lord is glory and pride, happiness and a crown of joyfulness.	11 O temor do Senhor é uma glória, um motivo de glória, uma fonte de alegria, uma coroa de regozijo.
12 The fear of the Lord gladdens the heart, giving happiness, joy and long life.	12 O temor do Senhor alegra o coração. Ele nos dá alegria, regozijo e longa vida.
13 For those who fear the Lord, all wil end wel : on their dying day they wil be blessed.	13 Quem teme o Senhor sentir-se-á bem no instante derradeiro, no dia da morte será abençoado.
14 The basis of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she was created with the faithful in their mothers' womb;	14 O amor de Deus é uma sabedoria digna de ser honrada.
15 she has made a home in the human race, an age -- old foundation, and to their descendants wil shefaithful y cling.	15 Aqueles a quem ela se mostra, amam-na logo que a vêem, logo que reconhecem os prodígios que realiza.
16 The ful ness of wisdom is to fear the Lord; she intoxicates them with her fruits;	16 O temor do Senhor é o início da sabedoria. Ela foi criada com os homens fiéis no seio de sua mãe, ela caminha com as mulheres de escol, vemo-la na companhia dos justos e dos fiéis.
17 she fil s their entire house with treasures and their storerooms with her produce.	17 O temor ao Senhor é a religião da ciência.
18 The crown of wisdom is to fear the Lord: she makes peace and health flourish.	18 Essa religião guarda e santifica o coração; ela lhe traz satisfação e alegria.
19 The Lord has seen and assessed her, he has showered down knowledge and intelligence, he hasexalted the renown of those who possess her.	19 Aquele que teme ao Senhor achar-se-á confortado, no dia da morte será abençoado.
20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord, and her branches are long life.	20 O temor ao Senhor é a plenitude da sabedoria, a plenitude de seus frutos, (para aquele que a possui) 21. ela enche toda a sua casa com os bens que produz, e seus celeiros com seus tesouros.

22 The rage of the wicked cannot put him in the right, for the weight of his rage is his downfal .	22 O temor do Senhor é a coroa da sabedoria: dá uma plenitude de paz e de frutos de salvação.
23 A patient person puts up with things until the right time comes: but his joy wil break out in the end.	23 Ele a viu e numerou-a; ora, um e outra são um dom de Deus.
24 Til the time comes he keeps his thoughts to himself, and many a lip will affirm how wise he is.	24 A sabedoria distribui a ciência e a prudente inteligência; eleva à glória aqueles que a possuem.
25 Wisdom's treasuries contain the maxims of knowledge, the sinner, however, holds piety in abhorrence.	25 O temor do Senhor é a raiz da sabedoria, seus ramos são de longa duração.
26 If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will bestow it on you.	26 A inteligência e a religião da ciência se acham nos tesouros da sabedoria, mas a sabedoria é abominada pelos pecadores.
27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction, and what pleases him is faithfulness and gentleness.	27 O temor ao Senhor expulsa o pecado,
28 Do not stand out against fear of the Lord, do not practise it with a double heart.	28 pois aquele que não tem esse temor não poderá tornar-se justo. A violência de sua paixão causará sua ruína.
29 Do not act a part in public, keep watch over your lips.	29 O homem paciente esperará até um determinado tempo, após o qual a alegria lhe será restituída.
30 Do not grow too high and mighty, for fear you fal and cover yourself in disgrace; for the Lord wouldthen reveal your secrets and overthrow you before the whole community for not having practised fear of the Lordand for having a heart ful of deceit.	30 O homem de bom senso guarda suas palavras; muitos falarão, em voz alta, de sua prudência.
	31 O sentido da instrução está encerrado nos celeiros da sabedoria.
	32 Mas o culto de Deus é abominado pelo pecador.
	33 Meu filho, tu que desejas ardentemente a sabedoria, sê justo e Deus ta concederá.
	34 Pois o temor do Senhor é sabedoria e instrução, e o que lhe é agradável
	35 é fidelidade e doçura; ele encherá os celeiros daqueles (que as possuem).
	36 Não sejas rebelde ao temor do Senhor, não vás a ele com um coração fingido.
	37 Não sejas hipócrita diante dos homens, e que teus lábios não sejam motivo de queda.
	38 Vela sobre eles para que não caias, e não atraias sobre tua alma a desonra;
	39 e para que Deus, revelando teus segredos, não te destrua no meio da assembléia,
