2 Maccabees 6

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;	1 Poco tiempo después, el rey envió a un consejero ateniense para que obligara a los judíos a abandonar las costumbres de sus padres y a no vivir conforme a las leyes de Dios;
2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.	2 a profanar el Templo de Jerusalén, dedicándolo a Júpiter Olímpico, y a dedicar el del monte Garizim a Júpiter Hospitalario, conforme a la idiosincrasia de los habitantes de aquel lugar.
3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.	3 Este recrudecimiento del mal se hacía penoso e insoportable para todos.
4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.	4 El Templo se llenó del desenfreno y las orgías de los paganos, que se divertían con prostitutas y tenían relaciones con mujeres en los atrios sagrados, e incluso, introducían allí objetos prohibidos.
5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.	5 El altar estaba repleto de ofrendas ilegítimas, proscritas por la Ley.
6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.	6 No se podía observar el sábado, y ni siquiera declararse judío.
7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.	7 Por el contrario, todos se veían penosamente forzados a participar del banquete ritual con que se conmemoraba cada mes el nacimiento del rey; y cuando llegaban las fiestas dionisíacas, se los obligaba a seguir el cortejo de Dionisios, coronados de guirnaldas.
8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,	8 Por instigación de Tolomeo, se publicó un decreto dirigido a las ciudades griegas de los alrededores, obligándolas a que procedieran de la misma manera contra los judíos y los hicieran participar en los banquetes rituales.
9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.	9 Además, se ordenaba degollar a los que rehusaran adoptar las costumbres griegas. Todo esto hacía prever la inminente calamidad.
10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .	10 Dos mujeres fueron delatadas por haber circuncidado a sus hijos, y después de hacerlas pasear públicamente por la ciudad con sus niños colgados del pecho, las precipitaron desde lo alto de la muralla.
11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.	11 Otros, que se habían reunido en las cavernas cercanas para celebrar ocultamente el día sábado, fueron denunciados a Filipo y quemados todos juntos, ya que no se habían atrevido a defenderse por respeto a la santidad de aquel día.
12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.	12 Ruego a los lectores de este libro que no se dejen impresionar por estas calamidades. Piensen más bien que estos castigos no han sucedido para la ruina, sino para la educación de nuestro pueblo.
13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.	13 Porque es una señal de gran benevolencia no tolerar por mucho tiempo a los impíos, sino infligirles rápidamente un castigo.
14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,	14 Antes de castigar a las otras naciones, el Soberano espera pacientemente que colmen la medida de sus pecados; pero con nosotros ha decidido obrar de otra manera,
15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.	15 para no tener que castigarnos más tarde, cuando nuestros pecados hayan llegado al colmo.
16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.	16 Por eso nunca retira de nosotros su misericordia, y aunque corrige a su pueblo por medio de la adversidad, no lo abandona.
17 Let this be said simply by way of reminder; we must return to our story without more ado.	17 Que esto sirva solamente para recordar ciertas verdades. Y después de estas consideraciones, prosigamos la narración.
18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.	18 Eleazar, uno de los principales maestros de la Ley, de edad muy avanzada y de noble aspecto, fue forzado a abrir la boca para comer carne de cerdo.
19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,	19 Pero él, prefiriendo una muerte honrosa a una vida infame, marchó voluntariamente al suplicio,
20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.	20 después de haber escupido la carne, como deben hacerlo los que tienen el valor de rechazar lo que no está permitido comer, ni siquiera por amor a la vida.
21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;	21 Los que presidían este banquete ritual contrario a la Ley, como lo conocían desde hacía mucho tiempo, lo llevaron aparte y le rogaron que hiciera traer carne preparada expresamente para él y que le estuviera permitido comer. Asimismo le dijeron que fingiera comer la carne del sacrificio, conforme a la orden del rey.
22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.	22 Obrando de esa manera, se libraría de la muerte y sería tratado humanitariamente por su antigua amistad con ellos.
23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.	23 Pero él, tomando una noble resolución, digna de su edad, del prestigio de su vejez, de sus veneradas canas, de la vida ejemplar que había llevado desde su infancia y, sobre todo, de la santa legislación establecida por Dios, se mostró consecuentemente consigo mismo, pidiendo que lo enviaran de inmediato a la morada de los muertos.
24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life	24 «A nuestra edad, decía, no está bien fingir. De lo contrario, muchos jóvenes creerán que Eleazar, a los noventa años, se ha pasado a las costumbres paganas.
25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.	25 Entonces también ellos, a causa de mi simulación y de mi apego a lo poco que me resta de vida, se desviarán por culpa mía, y yo atraeré sobre mi vejez la infamia y el deshonor.
26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.	26 Porque, aunque ahora me librara del castigo de los hombres, no podría escapar, ni vivo ni muerto, de las manos del Todopoderoso.
27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,	27 Por eso, me mostraré digno de mi vejez entregando mi vida valientemente.
28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,	28 Así dejaré a los jóvenes un noble ejemplo, al morir con entusiasmo y generosidad por las venerables y santas leyes». Dicho esto, se encaminó resueltamente al suplicio.
29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.	29 Al oír estas palabras, que consideraban una verdadera locura, los que lo conducían cambiaron en crueldad la benevolencia que antes le habían demostrado.
30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'	30 Pero él, a punto ya de morir bajo los golpes, dijo entre gemidos: «El Señor, que posee el santo conocimiento, sabe muy bien que, pudiendo librarme de la muerte, soporto crueles dolores en mi cuerpo azotado; pero mi alma los padece gustosamente por temor a él».
31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.	31 De este modo, Eleazar dejó al morir, no sólo a los jóvenes, sino a la nación entera, su propia muerte como ejemplo de generosidad y como recuerdo de virtud.
