1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;	1 Ma di li a poco mandò il re un certo senatore Antiocheno a costringere i Giudei ad abbandonare le leggi della patria, e di Dio:
2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.	2 E a profanare eziandio il tempio di Gerusalemme, e dargli il nome di Giove Olimpio, e a quello di Garizim il nome di Giove straniero, quali erano gli abitanti di quel luogo.
3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.	3 Orrenda, e terribile per tutti era l'inondazione di tanti mali.
4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.	4 Perocché il tempio era pieno di lascivie, e di crapule de' Gentili, e di gente, che peccava colle meretrici, e le donne entravano sfacciatamente ne' luoghi sacrati, portandovi cose, che non eran permesse.
5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.	5 E l'altare stesso era pieno di cose illecite, e vietate dalle leggi.
6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.	6 Non si osservavano più i sabati, né si celebravano i dì solenni secondo il costume, e nissuno ardiva di confessare ingenuamente di esser Giudeo.
7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.	7 Ed eran condotti per dura necessità, ai sacrifizj nel dì natalizio del re, e quando si celebrava la festa di Bacco eran costretti d'andare attorno coronati di ellera in onore di lui.
8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,	8 E a suggestione di quelli di Tolemaide fu pubblicato nelle vicine città dei Gentili un editto, affinchè anche in quei luoghi fosser costretti nella stessa forma, i Giudei a sacrificare:
9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.	9 E quelli, che non volessero accomodarsi agli usi de' Gentili fossero uccisi. Era pertanto uno spettacolo degno di compassione.
10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .	10 Imperocché furono accusate due donne per aver circoncisi i loro figliuoli, e condottele in pubblica mostra per la città coi bambini attaccati alle mammelle, le precipitarono poi dalle mura.
11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.	11 Altri poi, che si erano adunati nelle vicine caverne per celebrar di nascosto il giorno del sabato, essendo stati denunziati a Filippo furon brugiati vivi, perché ebbero scrupolo di aiutarsi colle loro forze per riguardo alla religione, e alla santità di quel giorno.
12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.	12 Or io prego quelli, che leggeranno questo libro, che non prendano scandalo per tali sinistri avvenimenti, ma riflettano, che le cose che avvennero furon destinate all'ammenda, e non per lo sterminio di nostra nazione.
13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.	13 Perocché indizio di gran benevolenza egli è il non permettere ai peccatori di seguire per lungo tempo i loro capricci, ma dar prontamente di mano al castigo.
14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,	14 Perocché non fa egli come colle altre nazioni, le quali il Signore aspetta pazientemente a punirle venuto che sia il dì del Giudizio, colmata già la in misura de' lor peccati;
15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.	15 Non cosi ha egli disposto riguardo a noi, né a punirci aspetta che siano riuniti al loro termine i nostri peccati:
16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.	16 Cosi egli non allontana giammai la sua misericordia da noi, e correggendoci colle avversità non abbandona il suo popolo.
17 Let this be said simply by way of reminder; we must return to our story without more ado.	17 Ma bastino queste poche parole per avvertimento dei leggitori: venghiamo oramai alla narrazione.
18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.	18 Eleazaro adunque uno de' primi dottori della legge, uomo di età avanzata, e di bell'aspetto, voleano quelli costringere a mangiar della carne di porco aprendogli a forza la bocca.
19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,	19 Ma egli preferendo una gloriosissima morte ad una odiosa vita, volontariamente s'incamminava al supplizio.
20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.	20 E mirando, a quel che gli convenisse di fare, serbando stabile la pazienza, determinò di non far cosa illecita per amor della vita.
21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;	21 Or quelli, che eran presenti, per una ingiusta compassione, e per l'amore che a lui portavano da lungo tempo, prendendolo a parte lo pregavano a permettere, che si portassero delle carni, di quelle ch'ei potea mangiare, per fingere ch'egli avesse mangiato, secondo l'ordine del re, delle carni del sacrificio;
22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.	22 Affinchè per tal mezzo si liberasse dalla morte: e questa umanità usavan con lui per l'antico affetto, che gli portavano.
23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.	23 Ma egli investitosi di alti sentimenti degni di sua età, e vecchiezza, e dell'antica natia nobiltà, e dell'ottima maniera di vita osservata fin da fanciullo, secondo i dettami della legge santa data da Dio, rispose subito, e disse, che avrebbe voluto esser prima gettato nell'inferno.
24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life	24 Imperocché, disse egli, non è cosa conveniente alla nostra età il fingere; e di ciò n'avverrebbe, che molti giovani imaginandosi, che Eleazaro sui novant' anni abbia fatto passaggio alla maniera di vivere dell'altre genti,
25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.	25 Eglino pure per la mia finzione, e per questo poco di vita corruttibile cadrebbeno in errore, ed io alla mia vecchiezza procaccerei infamia, ed esecrazione.
26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.	26 Perocché quand'anche io potessi adesso sottrarmi ai supplizj degli uomini, non potrei però né vivo, né morto, fuggir di mano all'Onnipotente.
27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,	27 Per la qual cosa morendo con fortezza darommi a conoscere degno della vecchiezza:
28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,	28 E un grand'esempio lascerò alla gioventù sopportando con animo volonteroso, e costante una onorevol morte per le gravissime, e santissime nostre leggi. Detto questo fu strascinato al supplizio.
29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.	29 E quelli, che lo conducevano, e so gli eran mostrati più amorevoli si acceser di sdegno per le parole dette da lui, le quali credevan procedere da arroganza.
30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'	30 Ma nel tempo, che lo martoriavano colle percosse gettò egli un sospiro e disse: Signore, che hai la scienza santa, tu sai certamente come potendo io liberarmi dalla morte sostengo atroci dolori nel corpo, ma secondo lo spirito volentieri patisco tali cose pel tuo timore.
31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.	31 Or questi in tal modo finì di vivere, lasciando non solo ai giovani, ma anche a tutta la nazione la memoria della sua morte per esempio di virtù, e di fortezza.
