1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;	1 Non molto tempo dopo, il re inviò un vecchio ateniese per costringere i Giudei ad allontanarsi dalle leggi dei padri e a non governarsi più secondo le leggi di Dio,
2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.	2 e inoltre per profanare il tempio di Gerusalemme e dedicare questo a Giove Olimpio e quello sul Garizìm a Giove Ospitale, come si confaceva agli abitanti del luogo.
3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.	3 Grave e intollerabile per tutti era il dilagare del male.
4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.	4 Il tempio infatti era pieno delle dissolutezze e delle gozzoviglie dei pagani, che si divertivano con le prostitute ed entro i sacri portici si univano a donne, introducendovi pratiche sconvenienti.
5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.	5 L’altare era colmo di cose detestabili, vietate dalle leggi.
6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.	6 Non era più possibile né osservare il sabato né celebrare le feste dei padri né semplicemente dichiarare di essere giudeo.
7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.	7 Si era trascinati con aspra violenza ogni mese, nel giorno natalizio del re, ad assistere al sacrificio e, quando giungevano le feste dionisiache, si era costretti a sfilare in onore di Diòniso coronati di edera.
8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,	8 Su istigazione dei cittadini di Tolemàide, fu poi emanato un decreto per le vicine città ellenistiche, perché anch’esse seguissero le stesse disposizioni contro i Giudei, li costringessero a mangiare le carni dei sacrifici
9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.	9 e mettessero a morte quanti non accettavano di aderire alle usanze greche. Si poteva allora capire quale tribolazione incombesse.
10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .	10 Furono denunciate, per esempio, due donne che avevano circonciso i figli: appesero i bambini alle loro mammelle, e dopo averle condotte in giro pubblicamente per la città, le precipitarono dalle mura.
11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.	11 Altri che si erano raccolti insieme nelle vicine caverne per celebrare il sabato, denunciati a Filippo, vi furono bruciati dentro, perché essi avevano riluttanza a difendersi per il rispetto di quel giorno santissimo.
12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.	12 Io prego coloro che avranno in mano questo libro di non turbarsi per queste disgrazie e di pensare che i castighi non vengono per la distruzione, ma per la correzione del nostro popolo.
13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.	13 Quindi è veramente segno di grande benevolenza il fatto che agli empi non è data libertà per molto tempo, ma subito incappano nei castighi.
14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,	14 Poiché il Signore non si propone di agire con noi come fa con le altre nazioni, attendendo pazientemente il tempo di punirle, quando siano giunte al colmo dei loro peccati;
15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.	15 e questo per non doverci punire alla fine, quando fossimo giunti all’estremo delle nostre colpe.
16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.	16 Perciò egli non ci toglie mai la sua misericordia, ma, correggendoci con le sventure, non abbandona il suo popolo.
17 Let this be said simply by way of reminder; we must return to our story without more ado.	17 Ciò sia detto da noi solo per ricordare questa verità. Dobbiamo ora tornare alla narrazione.
18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.	18 Un tale Eleàzaro, uno degli scribi più stimati, uomo già avanti negli anni e molto dignitoso nell’aspetto della persona, veniva costretto ad aprire la bocca e a ingoiare carne suina.
19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,	19 Ma egli, preferendo una morte gloriosa a una vita ignominiosa, s’incamminò volontariamente al supplizio,
20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.	20 sputando il boccone e comportandosi come conviene a coloro che sono pronti ad allontanarsi da quanto non è lecito gustare per attaccamento alla vita.
21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;	21 Quelli che erano incaricati dell’illecito banchetto sacrificale, in nome della familiarità di antica data che avevano con quest’uomo, lo tirarono in disparte e lo pregarono di prendere la carne di cui era lecito cibarsi, preparata da lui stesso, e fingere di mangiare le carni sacrificate imposte dal re,
22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.	22 perché, agendo a questo modo, sarebbe sfuggito alla morte e avrebbe trovato umanità in nome dell’antica amicizia che aveva con loro.
23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.	23 Ma egli, facendo un nobile ragionamento, degno della sua età e del prestigio della vecchiaia, della raggiunta veneranda canizie e della condotta irreprensibile tenuta fin da fanciullo, ma specialmente delle sante leggi stabilite da Dio, rispose subito dicendo che lo mandassero pure alla morte.
24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life	24 «Poiché – egli diceva – non è affatto degno della nostra età fingere, con il pericolo che molti giovani, pensando che a novant’anni Eleàzaro sia passato alle usanze straniere,
25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.	25 a loro volta, per colpa della mia finzione, per appena un po’ più di vita, si perdano per causa mia e io procuri così disonore e macchia alla mia vecchiaia.
26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.	26 Infatti, anche se ora mi sottraessi al castigo degli uomini, non potrei sfuggire, né da vivo né da morto, alle mani dell’Onnipotente.
27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,	27 Perciò, abbandonando ora da forte questa vita, mi mostrerò degno della mia età
28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,	28 e lascerò ai giovani un nobile esempio, perché sappiano affrontare la morte prontamente e nobilmente per le sante e venerande leggi». Dette queste parole, si avviò prontamente al supplizio.
29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.	29 Quelli che ve lo trascinavano, cambiarono la benevolenza di poco prima in avversione, ritenendo che le parole da lui pronunciate fossero una pazzia.
30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'	30 Mentre stava per morire sotto i colpi, disse tra i gemiti: «Il Signore, che possiede una santa scienza, sa bene che, potendo sfuggire alla morte, soffro nel corpo atroci dolori sotto i flagelli, ma nell’anima sopporto volentieri tutto questo per il timore di lui».
31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.	31 In tal modo egli morì, lasciando la sua morte come esempio di nobiltà e ricordo di virtù non solo ai giovani, ma anche alla grande maggioranza della nazione.
