1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;	1 - Ma dopo poco, il re fraudò un certo vecchio antiocheno a costringer i Giudei a rinnegare le leggi della patria e di Dio;
2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.	2 ed inoltre, a contaminar il tempio di Gerusalemme, intitolandolo a Giove Olimpio, e quello del Garizlm a Giove Ospitale, come ospitali eran quelli che v’abitavano.
3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.	3 Orribile, ed. a tutti insopportabile era quel cumulo di mali;
4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.	4 perchè il tempio era pieno della lussuria e delle crapule de’ gentili, e di quelli che vi tripudiavano con le meretrici; le donne di proprio arbitrio entravano ne' luoghi santi, portandovi quel che non era lecito;
5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.	5 l’altare era pieno di cose vietate che dalle leggi eran proibite;
6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.	6 non s’osservavano i sabati, nè le patrie solennità venivan celebrate, nè alcuno professava apertamente di esser Giudeo.
7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.	7 Il giorno natalizio del re, per dura necessità, venivan condotti a sacrificare, e quando si celebravano i misteri di Bacco, eran costretti ad andar in giro coronati di edera in onore di Bacco,
8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,	8 Ad istigazione poi de' Tolomei, usci un editto nelle vicine città dei Gentili, affinchè nella stessa maniera essi pure agissero sul Giudei per farli sacrificare,
9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.	9 e quelli che non volesser passare alle usanze gentili, li uccidessero. Era dunque una miseria a vedersi,
10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .	10 Infatti, di due donne fu riferito che avevan circonciso i loro figliuoli, e dopo averle pubblicamente condotte attorno per la città coi bambini attaccati al petto, le precipitarono dalle mura.
11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.	11 Altri, che s’erano riuniti nelle vicine spelonche, e vi celebravano di nascosto il giorno di sabato, essendo stati denunziati a Filippo, vi furono bruciati vivi, perchè per rispetto alla santità della legge non vollero difendersi.
12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.	12 Ora io prego quelli che leggeranno questo libro, di non si scandalizzare per questa avversità, ma di credere che quel che accadde fu non per la rovina ma per l’ammaestramento della nostra gente.
13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.	13 Invero, non lasciar che i peccatori lungamente agiscano e proprio capriccio, ma presto castigarli, è segno di grande benevolenza.
14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,	14 Con le altre nazioni, il Signore aspetta pazientemente, per punirle nella pienezza de' loro peccati quando verrà il giorno dei giudizio; non cosi con noi ;
15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.	15 nè con noi ha stabilito di castigarci alla fine, quando i nostri peccati hanno colma la misura.
16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.	16 Perciò non mai da noi ritira la sua misericordia, e castigandoci con le avversità non abbandona il suo popolo.
17 Let this be said simply by way of reminder; we must return to our story without more ado.	17 Sia ciò detto brevemente ad ammonizione de' lettori; ora, riprendiamo il racconto.
18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.	18 Eleazaro, dunque, dei principali tra gli scribi, anziano d’età, di nobile aspetto, apertogli a forza la bocca, volevan costringerlo a mangiare carne di porco.
19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,	19 Ma egli preferendo una gloriosissima morte ad una spregevole vita, volontariamente s'incamminava al supplizio;
20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.	20 perchè, riflettendo come gli convenisse condursi e sopportar fortemente, deliberò di non voler commettere cose illecite per salvarsi la vita.
21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;	21 Quelli però ch’eran presenti, mossi da falsa compassione per l’antica amicizia che gli avevano, chiamandolo da parte, gli suggerivano di farsi portar carni lecite, fingendo di mangiare, secondo l’editto del re, di quelle sacrificate,
22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.	22 e cosi esser libero dalla morte; per l’antica amicizia con lui, gli usavano tal riguardo.
23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.	23 Ma egli si mise a pensare all’eminente dignità della sua vecchiezza, all’ingenita nobiltà della sua canizie, alla sua illibata condotta sin da fanciullo; e secondo gli statuti della santa legge da Dio stabilita rispose subito che voleva piuttosto esser messo a morte.
24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life	24 e disse: « Non conviene alla mia età fingere, in modo che molti tra i giovani, credendo che Eleazaro di novantanni sia passato ai costumi dei Gentili,
25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.	25 restino anch’essi tratti in errore dalla mia simulazione, per amore d’un altro poco di questa corruttibile vita, e cosi lo mi attiri il disonore e la maledizione sulla mia vecchiezza.
26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.	26 Perchè, anche se nella vita presente mi risparmierò i supplizi degli uomini, nè vivo nè morto sfuggirò alla mano dell’ Onnipotente.
27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,	27 Perciò, uscendo fortemente di vita, mi mostrerò degno della mia vecchiezza,
28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,	28 e lascerò ai giovani un nobile esempio, se con prontezza e costanza incontrerò un’onorata morte per leggi cosi venerabili e sante». Ciò detto, veniva senz’altro condotto al supplizio.
29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.	29 Quelli però che ve lo conducevano, e poco fa gli erano stati benevoli, montarono in furia per le sue parole, che essi pensavano provenire da arroganza.
30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'	30 Ma egli, vicino a morire sotto i colpi, gemendo, disse: « Signore che hai scienza santa, tu sai chiaramente che io, mentre avrei potuto liberarmi dalla morte, sostengo nel corpo acerbi dolori ; ma nell’animo li sopporto volentieri per il tuo timore ».
31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.	31 Così quegli passò di vita, lasciando non solo ai giovani ma all’ intera nazione la memoria della sua morte, ed un esempio di virtù e di fortezza. Martirio di sette fratelli e della loro madre.
