2 Maccabees 6

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Shortly afterwards, the king sent Gerontes the Athenian to force the Jews to violate their ancestralcustoms and live no longer by the laws of God;	1 Dopo non molto tempo, il re inviò un vecchio ateniese affinché costringesse i Giudei ad abbandonare le leggi dei padri e a non vivere più secondo le leggi di Dio;
2 and to profane the Temple in Jerusalem and dedicate it to Olympian Zeus, and the one on MountGerizim to Zeus, Patron of Strangers, as the inhabitants of the latter place had requested.	2 profanasse il tempio di Gerusalemme e dedicasse questo a Giove Olimpio e quello sul Garizim, come avevano ottenuto gli abitanti del luogo, a Giove Ospitale.
3 The advent of these evils was painful y hard for al the people to bear.	3 La violenza del male era per tutti dura e insopportabile.
4 The Temple was fil ed with revel ing and debauchery by the gentiles, who took their pleasure withprostitutes and had intercourse with women in the sacred precincts, introducing other indecencies besides.	4 Il tempio, infatti, era ripieno della dissolutezza e delle orge dei gentili, che vi si divertivano con le amiche e sotto i portici si accoppiavano alle donne, portandovi dentro anche cose sconvenienti.
5 The altar of sacrifice was loaded with victims proscribed by the law as profane.	5 L'altare poi era ripieno di cose empie, proibite dalle leggi.
6 No one might either keep the Sabbath or observe the traditional feasts, or so much as admit to being aJew.	6 Non si poteva né celebrare il sabato né osservare le feste dei padri né semplicemente confessare di essere giudeo.
7 People were driven by harsh compulsion to take part in the monthly ritual meal commemorating theking's birthday; and when a feast of Dionysus occurred, they were forced to wear ivy wreaths and walk in theDionysiac procession.	7 Si era condotti con dura forza ogni mese, nel giorno natalizio del re, al banchetto sacrificale e, al giungere delle feste dionisiache, si era costretti a scortare in corteo Dioniso, portando corone di edera.
8 A decree was issued at the instance of the people of Ptolemais for the neighbouring Greek cities,enforcing the same conduct on the Jews there, obliging them to share in the sacrificial meals,	8 Per istigazione della gente di Tolemaide giunse poi un decreto affinché, nelle città ellenistiche circonvicine, vi si tenesse la medesima condotta contro i Giudei e li si facesse partecipare ai banchetti sacri,
9 and ordering the execution of those who would not voluntarily conform to Greek customs. So it becameclear that disaster was imminent.	9 uccidendo coloro che non si risolvevano a passare alle usanze ellenistiche. Era possibile, quindi, intravedere la sciagura che incombeva.
10 For example, two women were charged with having circumcised their children. They were paradedpublicly round the town, with their babies hung at their breasts, and then hurled over the city wal .	10 Infatti due donne furono deferite per aver circonciso i loro figli. Appesi i bambini ai loro seni, le condussero in giro pubblicamente per la città e le precipitarono giù dalle mura.
11 Other people, who had assembled in some near-by caves to keep the seventh day without attractingattention, were denounced to Philip, and were then al burnt to death together, since their consciences would notal ow them to defend themselves, out of respect for the holiness of the day.	11 Altri poi, che si erano radunati nelle grotte vicine per celebrare segretamente il sabato, denunziati a Filippo, furono bruciati, poiché ebbero scrupolo di difendersi per rispetto di quel solennissimo giorno.
12 Now, I urge anyone who may read this book not to be dismayed at these calamities, but to reflect thatsuch visitations are intended not to destroy our race but to discipline it.	12 Esorto quelli che s'imbatteranno in questo libro a non sconcertarsi per tali sventure e a pensare piuttosto che i castighi furono dati non per la rovina, ma per la correzione della nostra gente.
13 Indeed, when evil-doers are not left for long to their own devices but incur swift retribution, it is a signof great benevolence.	13 Poiché il non lasciare impuniti per molto tempo coloro che commettono empietà, ma colpirli subito con castighi, è segno di grande benevolenza.
14 In the case of other nations, the Master waits patiently for them to attain the ful measure of their sinsbefore he punishes them, but with us he has decided to deal differently,	14 Difatti il longanime Sovrano ha giudicato di comportarsi con noi non come con le altre genti, che egli aspetta fino a che siano giunte al colmo dei peccati per punirle.
15 rather than have to punish us later, when our sins come to ful measure.	15 E ciò al fine di non punirci alla fine, quando i nostri peccati fossero giunti all'estremo.
16 And so he never entirely withdraws his mercy from us; he may discipline us by some disaster, but hedoes not desert his own people.	16 Perciò egli non ritira affatto da noi la sua misericordia; e, anche quando corregge con la sventura, non abbandona mai il suo popolo.

18 Eleazar, one of the foremost teachers of the Law, a man already advanced in years and of most nobleappearance, had his mouth forced open, to make him eat a piece of pork.	18 Un certo Eleazaro, uno dei principali scribi, uomo già avanzato in età e molto bello d'aspetto, era forzato ad aprire la bocca per ingoiare carne suina.
19 But he, resolving to die with honour rather than to live disgraced, walked of his own accord to thetorture of the wheel,	19 Preferendo una morte gloriosa ad una vita ignominiosa, spontaneamente si avviò al supplizio,
20 having spat the stuff out, as befits those with the courage to reject what is not lawful to taste, ratherthan live.	20 sputando il boccone e comportandosi come dovrebbero fare coloro che hanno il coraggio di rifiutare quei cibi di cui non è lecito nutrirsi per amore della vita.
21 The people supervising the ritual meal, forbidden by the Law, because of the length of time for whichthey had known him, took him aside and privately urged him to have meat brought of a kind he could properlyuse, prepared by himself, and only pretend to eat the portions of sacrificial meat as prescribed by the king;	21 Allora quelli che erano preposti a quell'empio pasto sacrificale, conoscendo l'uomo da vecchio tempo, presolo in disparte, lo esortavano a farsi portare carni di cui gli era lecito servirsi e a prepararsele da se stesso, fingendo di mangiare le carni del sacrificio comandate dal re,
22 this action would enable him to escape death, by availing himself of an act of kindness prompted bytheir long friendship.	22 di modo che, agendo così, sarebbe stato liberato dalla morte e trattato con umanità per via della vecchia amicizia per essi.
23 But having taken a noble decision worthy of his years and the dignity of his great age and the wel -earned distinction of his grey hairs, worthy too of his impeccable conduct from boyhood, and above al of theholy legislation established by God himself, he answered accordingly, telling them to send him at once to Hades.	23 Egli, però, prese una nobile risoluzione, degna dell'età, del prestigio della vecchiaia, dell'acquisita e illustre canizie e dell'ottima condotta tenuta fin da fanciullo, ma soprattutto della santa legge stabilita da Dio, e rispose subito che lo spedissero al soggiorno dei morti.
24 'Pretence', he said, 'does not befit our time of life; many young people would suppose that Eleazar atthe age of ninety had conformed to the foreigners' way of life	24 "Non è, infatti, degno della nostra età fingere, in modo che molti giovani, credendo che il novantenne Eleazaro sia passato alla moda straniera,
25 and, because I had played this part for the sake of a paltry brief spel of life, might themselves be ledastray on my account; I should only bring defilement and disgrace on my old age.	25 siano sviati anch'essi a causa mia, per la mia simulazione in vista di una breve ed esigua vita, e io mi acquisti vergogna e infamia per la vecchiaia.
26 Even though for the moment I avoid execution by man, I can never, living or dead, elude the grasp ofthe Almighty.	26 Infatti, anche se al presente riuscissi a evitare il castigo degli uomini, vivendo o morendo non sfuggirei alle mani dell'Onnipotente.
27 Therefore if I am man enough to quit this life here and now, I shal prove myself worthy of my old age,	27 Per questo, abbandonando ora virilmente la vita, mi mostrerò degno della vecchiaia,
28 and I shal have left the young a noble example of how to make a good death, eagerly andgenerously, for the venerable and holy laws.' So saying, he walked straight to the wheel,	28 lasciando ai giovani un nobile esempio di come si debba morire, coraggiosamente e nobilmente, per le auguste e sante leggi". Dette tali cose, si avviò prontamente al supplizio.
29 while those who were escorting him, recently so wel disposed towards him, turned against him afterthis declaration, which they regarded as sheer madness.	29 Quelli che ve lo conducevano cambiarono in durezza la simpatia di poco prima, a causa delle parole da lui dette, credendo essi che fosse una pazzia.
30 He for his part, just before he died under the blows, gave a sigh and said, 'The Lord whose knowledgeis holy sees clearly that, though I might have escaped death, from awe of him I gladly endure these agonies ofbody under the lash, and that in my soul I am glad to suffer.'	30 Egli però, stando sul punto di finire sotto i colpi, sospirando disse: "Al Signore, che possiede la santa scienza, è manifesto che, pur potendo scampare alla morte, sopporto nel corpo dure sofferenze mentre sono flagellato e che nell'anima le soffro volentieri per il suo timore".
31 This was how he died, leaving his death as an example of nobility and a record of virtue not only forthe young but for the greater part of the nation.	31 In questo modo egli passò di vita, lasciando con la sua morte, non solo ai giovani, ma anche alla maggioranza della nazione, un esempio di nobiltà e un memoriale di virtù.
