1 While the holy city was inhabited in al peace and the laws were observed as perfectly as possible,owing to the piety of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness,	1 Enquanto gozava a cidade santa duma paz perfeita e se observavam exactamente as leis, por causa da piedade do sumo pontífice Onias e do seu ódio a todo o mal,
2 it came about that the kings themselves honoured the holy place and enhanced the glory of the Templewith the most splendid offerings,	2 acontecia que os próprios reis consideravam o, (santo) lugar como digno de grande veneração e enriqueciam o templo com grandíssimos donativos,
3 even to the extent that Seleucus king of Asia defrayed from his own revenues al the expenses arisingout of the sacrificial liturgy.	3 de tal sorte que até Seleuco, rei da Ásia, pagava das suas rendas toda a despesa que pertencia ao ministério dos sacrifícios.
4 But a certain Simon, of the tribe of Bilgah, on being appointed administrator of the Temple, came intoconflict with the high priest over the regulation of the city markets.	4 Porém, um tal Simão, da tribo de Benjamim, que estava constituído prefeito do templo, entrou em luta com o sumo pontífice, por causa da inspeeção do mercado público.
5 Unable to get the better of Onias, he went off to Apol onius, son of Thraseos, who was at that timecommander-in-chief of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,	5 Vendo que não podia vencer Onias, foi ter com Apolónio, filho de Traseias, que naquele tempo era governador da Celesíria e da Fenícia,
6 and made out to him that the Treasury in Jerusalem was groaning with untold wealth, that the amountcontributed was incalculable and out of all proportion to expenditure on the sacrifice, but that it could al bebrought under the control of the king.	6 e declarou-lhe que o erário de Jerusalém estava cheio de imensas somas de dinheiro, que nele se achavam incalculáveis riquezas, que não se destinavam aos gastos dos sacrifícios, e que se poderia descobrir meio de tudo isto cair em poder do rei.
7 Apol onius met the king and told him about the wealth that had been disclosed to him; whereupon theking selected Heliodorus, his chancel or, and sent him with instructions to effect the removal of the reportedwealth.	7 Tendo, pois, Apolónio avisado o rei das riquezas que lhe foram referidas, este mandou chamar Heliodoro, seu primeiro ministro, e enviou-o com ordem de trazer as ditas riquezas.
8 Heliodorus lost no time in setting out, ostensibly to inspect the towns of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, butin fact to accomplish the king's purpose.	8 Heliodoro pôs-se logo a caminho, com o pretexto de visitar as cidades da Cealesíria e da Fenícia, mas na realidade para executar a ordem do rei.
9 On his arrival in Jerusalem, and after a hospitable reception from the high priest and the city, heannounced what had been disclosed, thus revealing the reason for his presence, and asked if this was indeedthe true situation.	9 Chegado a Jerusalém e recebido na cidade com amabilidade pelo sumo sacerdote, Heliodoro declarou-lhe as informações recebidas e qual a verdadeira causa da sua vinda, perguntando, todavia, se era verdade o que tinha sido dito.
10 The high priest explained that there were funds set aside for widows and orphans,	10 Então o sumo sacerdote representou-lhe que se tratava de depósitos das viúvas e dos órfãos.
11 with some belonging to Hyrcanus son of Tobias, a man occupying a very exalted position, and thatthe whole sum, in contrast to what the evil Simon had al eged, amounted to four hundred talents of silver andtwo hundred of gold.	11 que parte pertencia a Hircano, filho de Tobias, varão muito eminente; que as declarações de Simão eram caluniosas, pois toda a soma era de quatrocentos talentos de prata e duzentos de ouro;
12 He also added that it was entirely out of the question that an injustice should be done to those whohad put their trust in the sanctity of the place and in the inviolable majesty of a Temple venerated throughout theentire world.	12 que de nenhum modo se podia defraudar os que tinham depositado confiança na santidade do lugar e na inviolabilidade e majestade do templo, que por todo o mundo era honrado.
13 But Heliodorus, because of his instructions from the king, peremptorily insisted that the funds must beconfiscated for the royal exchequer.	13 Mas Heliodoro, em cumprimento das ordens recebidas do rei, sustentava que, em todo o caso, devia aquele dinheiro ser levado para o tesouro real.
14 Fixing a day for the purpose, he went in to draw up an inventory of the funds. There was no littleconsternation throughout the city;	14 No dia marcado para isso, dispôs-se a entrar no templo para executar o seu desígnio. Entretanto havia uma grande consternação por toda a cidade.
15 the priests in their sacred vestments prostrated themselves before the altar and prayed to Heaven, tothe Author of the law governing deposits, to preserve these funds intact for the depositors.	15 Os sacerdotes prostraram-se diante do altar com as suas vestes sacerdotais, clamavam ao céu, invocando aquele que fez a lei sobre os depósitos, rogando-lhe que os conservasse salvos para aqueles que os tinham confiado.
16 The appearance of the high priest was enough to pierce the heart of the beholder, his expression andhis altered colour betraying the anguish of his soul;	16 Ninguém podia olhar para o semblante do sumo sacerdote, sem ficar com o coração traspassado, porque a mudança do seu semblante e da sua cor mostrava agonia da sua alma.
17 the man was so overwhelmed by fear and bodily trembling that those who saw him could not possiblymistake the distress he was suffering.	17 A consternação que o invadia e o tremor do seu corpo declaravam bem, aos que olhavam para ele, a dor do seu coração.
18 People rushed headlong from the houses, intent on making public supplication because of theindignity threatening the holy place.	18 Os habitantes saíram em bandos de suas casas, para preces públicas, ao pensarem na iminente profanação do templo.
19 Women thronged the streets swathed in sackcloth below their breasts; girls secluded indoors camerunning, some to the doorways, some to the city walls, while others leaned out of the windows,	19 As mulheres, cobertos os peitos com cilícios, enchiam as ruas; as donzelas, que se conservavam encerradas em suas casas, corriam, umas para as portas, outras para os muros, e algumas olhavam pelas janelas;
20 al stretching out their hands to Heaven in entreaty.	20 todas, porém, levantando as mãos para o céu, dirigiam a Deus as suas súplicas.
21 It was pitiful to see the people crowding together to prostrate themselves, and the foreboding of thehigh priest in his deep anguish.	21 Causava pena ver o abatimento de toda esta confusa multidão de povo e a angústia do sumo sacerdote.
22 While they were cal ing on the al -powerful Lord to preserve the deposits intact for the depositors, inful security,	22 Enquanto invocavam a Deus omnipotente para que conservasse invioláveis os depósitos daqueles que os tinham confiado,
23 Heliodorus set about his appointed task.	23 Heliodoro executava o seu plano. Já estava com os seus guardas junto à porta do erário,
24 He had already arrived with his bodyguard near the Treasury, when the Sovereign of spirits and ofevery power caused so great an apparition that all who had dared to accompany Heliodorus were dumbfoundedat the power of God and reduced to abject terror.	24 quando o Senhor dos espíritos e soberano dominador de todo o poder se manifestou tão magnificamente, que todos os que tinham ousado vir ali, foram lançados em terra pelo poder de Deus e ficaram num total desfalecimento e em grande terror.
25 Before their eyes appeared a horse richly caparisoned and carrying a fearsome rider. Rearingviolently, it struck at Heliodorus with its forefeet. The rider was seen to be accoutred entirely in gold.	25 Apareceu-lhes um cavalo, Sobre que estava montado um homem terrível, ajaezado com os melhores arreios, o qual, investindo contra Heliodoro o molestou com as patas dianteiras. O cavaleiro parecia ter uma armadura de ouro.
26 Two other young men of outstanding strength and radiant beauty, magnificently apparel ed, appearedto him at the same time and, taking their stand on each side of him, flogged him unremittingly, inflicting strokeafter stroke.	26 Ao mesmo tempo apareceram outros dois jovens, cheios de força, de resplandecente beleza, ricamente vestidos, os quais rodearam Heliodoro e o açoutavam nas costas, cada um da sua banda, descarregando sobre ele muitos golpes.
27 Suddenly Heliodorus fel to the ground, enveloped in thick darkness. His men came to his rescue andplaced him in a litter,	27 Caiu Heliodoro de repente por terra, envolvido numa grande escuridão. Pegaram nele, e, posto numa cadeira de mão, o levaram dali para fora.
28 this man who but a moment before had made his way into the Treasury, as we said above, with agreat retinue and his whole bodyguard; and as they carried him away, powerless to help himself, they openlyacknowledged the sovereign power of God.	28 Deste modo, o que tinha entrado no erário com uma grande comitiva e escolta de guardas, era levado sem se poder socorrer, depois de experimentar claramente o poder de Deus.
29 While Heliodorus lay prostrate under the divine visitation, speechless and bereft of al hope ofdeliverance,	29 Heliodoro, por efeito deste divino poder, jazia sem fala e sem esperança alguma de vida.
30 the Jews blessed the Lord who had miraculously glorified his own holy place. And the Temple, whicha little while before had been fil ed with terror and commotion, now overflowed with joy and gladness at themanifestation of the almighty Lord.	30 Pelo contrário, (os Judeus) bem-diziam o Senhor, por engrandecer o seu (santo) lugar; o templo, que pouco antes estava cheio de confusão e de tumulto, logo que o Senhor manifestou a sua omnipotência, encheu-se de regozijo e de alegria.
31 Some of Heliodorus' companions quickly begged Onias to entreat the Most High to grant the man hislife, lying as he did at the very point of death.	31 Então alguns amigos de Heliodoro foram a toda a pressa suplicar a Onias que invocasse o Altíssimo, para que desse vida ao que estava reduzido a dar o último suspiro.
32 The high priest, afraid that the king might suspect the Jews of some foul play concerning Heliodorus,did indeed offer a sacrifice for the man's recovery.	32 Então o sumo sacerdote, considerando que o rei poderia talvez suspeitar algum atentado urdido pelos Judeus contra Heliodoro, ofereceu um sacrifício pela vida deste homem.
33 And while the high priest was performing the rite of expiation, the same young men again appeared toHeliodorus, wearing the same apparel and, standing beside him, said, 'Be very grateful to Onias the high priest,since it is for his sake that the Lord has granted you your life.	33 Quando o sumo sacerdote oferecia o sacrifício expiatório, os mesmos dois jovens, vestidos dos mesmos trajos, apresentando-se a Heliodoro, disseram-lhe: Dá graças ao sacerdote Onias, porque o Senhor concede-te a vida por seu respeito.
34 As for you, who have been scourged by Heaven, you must proclaim to everyone the grandeur ofGod's power.' So saying, they vanished.	34 Tu, pois, que assim foste açoutado por Deus, anuncia a todos o seu grande poder. Ditas estas palavras, desapareceram.
35 Heliodorus offered sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to the preserver of his life, andthen took courteous leave of Onias and marched his forces back to the king.	35 Heliodoro, depois de ter oferecido um sacrifício a Deus e feito grandes promessas ao que lhe tinha concedido a vida, agradeceu a Onias e voltou com as suas tropas para o rei.
36 He openly testified to everyone about the works of the supreme God which he had seen with his owneyes.	36 A todos testificava Heliodoro as obras do grande Deus, que ele vira com os próprios olhos.
37 When the king asked Heliodorus what sort of man would be the right person to send to Jerusalem ona second occasion, he replied,	37 Tendo perguntado o rei a Heliodoro quem lhe parecia apto para ser mandado outra vez a Jerusalém, respondeu:
38 'If you have some enemy or anyone disloyal to the state, send him there, and you wil get him backwel flogged, if he survives at al , since some peculiarly divine power attaches to the holy place.	38 Se tens algum inimigo, ou adversário da tua governação, manda-o lá, e tu o verás voltar açoutado— se escapar— porque verdadeiramente naquele sitio há uma virtude divina.
39 He who has his dwel ing in heaven watches over the place and defends it, and he strikes down anddestroys those who come to harm it.'	39 Aquele que tem habitação nos céus, está vigilante e protege esse lugar, e fere e mata os que lá vão para fazer algum mal.
40 This was the outcome of the affair of Heliodorus and the preservation of the Treasury.	40 Eis o que se passou a respeito de Heliodoro e da conservação do erário.
