1 While the holy city was inhabited in al peace and the laws were observed as perfectly as possible,owing to the piety of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness,	1 Enquanto os habitantes de Jerusalém gozavam de uma paz perfeita, por causa da piedade e retidão do sumo sacerdote Onias, na exata observância das leis,
2 it came about that the kings themselves honoured the holy place and enhanced the glory of the Templewith the most splendid offerings,	2 o templo era respeitado, mesmo pelos reis estrangeiros. Estes honravam o santuário com os mais ricos presentes,
3 even to the extent that Seleucus king of Asia defrayed from his own revenues al the expenses arisingout of the sacrificial liturgy.	3 a tal ponto que Seleuco, rei da Ásia, subministrava com suas rendas pessoais toda a despesa necessária à liturgia dos sacrifícios.
4 But a certain Simon, of the tribe of Bilgah, on being appointed administrator of the Temple, came intoconflict with the high priest over the regulation of the city markets.	4 Todavia, certo Simão, da tribo de Belga, nomeado prefeito do templo, entrou em desacordo com o sumo sacerdote quanto à inspeção do mercado público.
5 Unable to get the better of Onias, he went off to Apol onius, son of Thraseos, who was at that timecommander-in-chief of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,	5 Como não pudesse vencer Onias, foi procurar Apolônio de Társis, então governador militar da Celesíria e da Fenícia.
6 and made out to him that the Treasury in Jerusalem was groaning with untold wealth, that the amountcontributed was incalculable and out of all proportion to expenditure on the sacrifice, but that it could al bebrought under the control of the king.	6 Declarou-lhe que o tesouro do templo transbordava de indizíveis riquezas, a não poder enumerá-las; que nada tinham a ver com os sacrifícios, e que ele daria um jeito de fazê-las passar ao erário real.
7 Apol onius met the king and told him about the wealth that had been disclosed to him; whereupon theking selected Heliodorus, his chancel or, and sent him with instructions to effect the removal of the reportedwealth.	7 Tendo uma audiência com o rei, Apolônio o advertiu sobre as riquezas que lhe haviam sido declaradas, e este, tomando uma decisão, enviou seu intendente Heliodoro com a ordem de trazer as ditas riquezas.
8 Heliodorus lost no time in setting out, ostensibly to inspect the towns of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, butin fact to accomplish the king's purpose.	8 Imediatamente, Heliodoro pôs-se a caminho, simulando visitas às cidades da Celesíria e da Fenícia; na realidade, porém, era para executar a ordem do rei.
9 On his arrival in Jerusalem, and after a hospitable reception from the high priest and the city, heannounced what had been disclosed, thus revealing the reason for his presence, and asked if this was indeedthe true situation.	9 Tendo chegado a Jerusalém e sendo recebido pelo sumo sacerdote da cidade com amabilidade, transmitiu-lhe as revelações recebidas e comunicou-lhe o sentido de sua visita; contudo, indagou se tudo isso correspondia à realidade.
10 The high priest explained that there were funds set aside for widows and orphans,	10 O sumo sacerdote fez-lhe ver que se tratava do depósito das viúvas e dos órfãos;
11 with some belonging to Hyrcanus son of Tobias, a man occupying a very exalted position, and thatthe whole sum, in contrast to what the evil Simon had al eged, amounted to four hundred talents of silver andtwo hundred of gold.	11 que somente um dos depósitos pertencia a Hircano, filho de Tobias, varão muito eminente; que não era como o pretendiam as calúnias do ímpio Simão, mas que tudo se reduzia a uma soma de quatrocentos talentos de prata e duzentos talentos de ouro.
12 He also added that it was entirely out of the question that an injustice should be done to those whohad put their trust in the sanctity of the place and in the inviolable majesty of a Temple venerated throughout theentire world.	12 Era completamente impossível defraudar os que haviam depositado confiança na santidade do lugar e no caráter sagrado e inviolável do templo venerado no mundo inteiro.
13 But Heliodorus, because of his instructions from the king, peremptorily insisted that the funds must beconfiscated for the royal exchequer.	13 Firme nas ordens do rei, Heliodoro respondeu que essas riquezas deveriam ser transportadas absolutamente para o tesouro real
14 Fixing a day for the purpose, he went in to draw up an inventory of the funds. There was no littleconsternation throughout the city;	14 e, num dia por ele fixado, entrou com a intenção de organizar o inventário. A partir dessa hora, uma grande inquietude se espalhou pela cidade toda.
15 the priests in their sacred vestments prostrated themselves before the altar and prayed to Heaven, tothe Author of the law governing deposits, to preserve these funds intact for the depositors.	15 Revestidos de suas vestes sacerdotais e prostrados diante do altar, os sacerdotes suplicavam ao céu e imploravam ao Autor da lei acerca dos depósitos, rogando-lhe que os conservasse intactos para aqueles que lhos tinham confiado.
16 The appearance of the high priest was enough to pierce the heart of the beholder, his expression andhis altered colour betraying the anguish of his soul;	16 Já o aspecto do sumo sacerdote causava pena ver, do mesmo modo seu semblante; e a alteração de seus traços manifestava sua angústia interior.
17 the man was so overwhelmed by fear and bodily trembling that those who saw him could not possiblymistake the distress he was suffering.	17 O susto que o havia tolhido agitava seu corpo com um tremor, que mostrava o sofrimento íntimo de sua alma.
18 People rushed headlong from the houses, intent on making public supplication because of theindignity threatening the holy place.	18 Diante da profanação que ameaçava o templo, o povo se precipitava em multidão para fora das casas, a fim de se ajuntarem à prece comum.
19 Women thronged the streets swathed in sackcloth below their breasts; girls secluded indoors camerunning, some to the doorways, some to the city walls, while others leaned out of the windows,	19 As mulheres cingidas com sacos pela altura dos seios enchiam as ruas, e quanto às jovens, retidas nas casas, corriam umas para as portas, outras para as muralhas, outras ainda se debruçavam nas janelas;
20 al stretching out their hands to Heaven in entreaty.	20 todas erguiam as mãos para o céu com gritos de súplica.
21 It was pitiful to see the people crowding together to prostrate themselves, and the foreboding of thehigh priest in his deep anguish.	21 Causava dó observar toda a confusão desse povo abatido e a angústia em que jazia o sumo sacerdote.
22 While they were cal ing on the al -powerful Lord to preserve the deposits intact for the depositors, inful security,	22 Enquanto suplicavam assim a proteção do todo-poderoso para que conservasse invioláveis os depósitos que lhes haviam sido confiados,
23 Heliodorus set about his appointed task.	23 Heliodoro executava o seu intento.
24 He had already arrived with his bodyguard near the Treasury, when the Sovereign of spirits and ofevery power caused so great an apparition that all who had dared to accompany Heliodorus were dumbfoundedat the power of God and reduced to abject terror.	24 Já se achava ali, com seus homens armados, quando o Senhor dos espíritos e soberano detentor de todo o poder suscitou uma tal aparição que todos os que haviam ousado vir ali desfaleceram de espanto, atingidos de pavor ante a majestade de Deus.
25 Before their eyes appeared a horse richly caparisoned and carrying a fearsome rider. Rearingviolently, it struck at Heliodorus with its forefeet. The rider was seen to be accoutred entirely in gold.	25 Viram eles, montado num cavalo ricamente ajaezado e guiado furiosamente, um cavaleiro de terrível aspecto, que lançava em Heliodoro as patas dianteiras do cavalo. O que vinha nele montado parecia ter uma armadura de ouro.
26 Two other young men of outstanding strength and radiant beauty, magnificently apparel ed, appearedto him at the same time and, taking their stand on each side of him, flogged him unremittingly, inflicting strokeafter stroke.	26 Ao mesmo tempo, apareceram-lhe outros dois jovens, cheios de força extraordinária, fulgurantes de luz, ricamente vestidos; colocando-se dos dois lados, puseram-se eles a açoitá-lo sem interrupção e descarregaram sobre ele uma saraivada de golpes.
27 Suddenly Heliodorus fel to the ground, enveloped in thick darkness. His men came to his rescue andplaced him in a litter,	27 Atirado logo por terra, Heliodoro foi envolvido por espessas trevas; seus companheiros ergueram-no e depositaram-no numa liteira.
28 this man who but a moment before had made his way into the Treasury, as we said above, with agreat retinue and his whole bodyguard; and as they carried him away, powerless to help himself, they openlyacknowledged the sovereign power of God.	28 E ele, que vinha para penetrar no mencionado tesouro com uma escolta numerosa e guardas pessoais, incapaz de se ajudar a si mesmo, foi levado por pessoas que reconheciam o manifesto poder de Deus.
29 While Heliodorus lay prostrate under the divine visitation, speechless and bereft of al hope ofdeliverance,	29 Enquanto ele se achava estendido e ferido pela força de Deus, sem fala e sem esperança alguma de salvação,
30 the Jews blessed the Lord who had miraculously glorified his own holy place. And the Temple, whicha little while before had been fil ed with terror and commotion, now overflowed with joy and gladness at themanifestation of the almighty Lord.	30 os habitantes de Jerusalém bendiziam o Senhor que havia glorificado seu templo. O santuário, que pouco antes estava cheio de confusão e de tumulto, logo que o Senhor manifestou sua onipotência encheu se de regozijo e de alegria.
31 Some of Heliodorus' companions quickly begged Onias to entreat the Most High to grant the man hislife, lying as he did at the very point of death.	31 Todavia, alguns dos companheiros de Heliodoro suplicavam logo a Onias que rezasse ao todo-poderoso, para restituir-lhe a vida, prestes, na verdade, a apagar-se.
32 The high priest, afraid that the king might suspect the Jews of some foul play concerning Heliodorus,did indeed offer a sacrifice for the man's recovery.	32 Receando que o rei suspeitasse de que os judeus houvessem organizado um atentado contra Heliodoro, o sumo sacerdote ofereceu um sacrifício por ele.
33 And while the high priest was performing the rite of expiation, the same young men again appeared toHeliodorus, wearing the same apparel and, standing beside him, said, 'Be very grateful to Onias the high priest,since it is for his sake that the Lord has granted you your life.	33 Ora, enquanto o pontífice executava a cerimônia expiatória, os mesmos jovens apareceram a Heliodoro, revestidos das mesmas vestes. Achegaram-se a ele e disseram-lhe: Sê reconhecido ao sumo sacerdote, porque é por causa dele que Deus te dá a vida.
34 As for you, who have been scourged by Heaven, you must proclaim to everyone the grandeur ofGod's power.' So saying, they vanished.	34 Proclama diante de todos seu grande poder, tu que foste açoitado por Deus. Ditas estas palavras, desapareceram.
35 Heliodorus offered sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to the preserver of his life, andthen took courteous leave of Onias and marched his forces back to the king.	35 Após ter oferecido um sacrifício ao Senhor, erguido abundantes preces ao que lhe havia poupado a vida, e agradecido a Onias, Heliodoro regressou com suas tropas para junto do rei.
36 He openly testified to everyone about the works of the supreme God which he had seen with his owneyes.	36 Testemunhava, diante de todos, os prodígios operados pelo Grande Deus, aos seus olhos
37 When the king asked Heliodorus what sort of man would be the right person to send to Jerusalem ona second occasion, he replied,	37 e, como o rei lhe perguntasse que homem julgava ele que pudesse enviar ainda uma vez a Jerusalém, respondeu:
38 'If you have some enemy or anyone disloyal to the state, send him there, and you wil get him backwel flogged, if he survives at al , since some peculiarly divine power attaches to the holy place.	38 Se tens algum inimigo, ou alguém que maquina contra ti, envia-o para lá, e encontrá-lo-ás ferido, se ainda viver, porque há verdadeiramente, naquele lugar, uma força divina.
39 He who has his dwel ing in heaven watches over the place and defends it, and he strikes down anddestroys those who come to harm it.'	39 O que habita no céu zela por aquele templo. Protege-o e arruína mortalmente os que aí vêm com más intenções.
40 This was the outcome of the affair of Heliodorus and the preservation of the Treasury.	40 Foi assim que se passaram estas coisas a respeito de Heliodoro e do tesouro sagrado que foi protegido.
