NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 While the holy city was inhabited in al peace and the laws were observed as perfectly as possible,owing to the piety of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness,	1 Quando la città santa godeva di una pace completa e le leggi vi erano osservate nel migliore dei modi, grazie alla pietà del sommo sacerdote Onia e al suo odio per il male,
2 it came about that the kings themselves honoured the holy place and enhanced the glory of the Templewith the most splendid offerings,	2 gli stessi re onoravano il luogo santo e glorificavano il tempio con i doni più splendidi,
3 even to the extent that Seleucus king of Asia defrayed from his own revenues al the expenses arisingout of the sacrificial liturgy.	3 al punto che anche Selèuco, re dell'Asia, provvedeva con le proprie rendite a tutte le spese occorrenti per la liturgia dei sacrifici.
4 But a certain Simon, of the tribe of Bilgah, on being appointed administrator of the Temple, came intoconflict with the high priest over the regulation of the city markets.	4 Or un certo Simone, della tribù di Bilga, essendo stato costituito soprintendente del tempio, venne a trovarsi in contrasto con il sommo sacerdote circa l'amministrazione della città.
5 Unable to get the better of Onias, he went off to Apol onius, son of Thraseos, who was at that timecommander-in-chief of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,	5 Pertanto, non riuscendo a prevalere su Onia, andò da Apollonio di Tarso, che in quel tempo era governatore della Celesiria e della Fenicia,
6 and made out to him that the Treasury in Jerusalem was groaning with untold wealth, that the amountcontributed was incalculable and out of all proportion to expenditure on the sacrifice, but that it could al bebrought under the control of the king.	6 e gli riferì che la camera del tesoro in Gerusalemme era talmente piena di indicibili ricchezze, che la quantità delle somme era incalcolabile; esse poi non avevano nulla a che fare con le spese per i sacrifici ed era possibile farle cadere in potere del re.
7 Apol onius met the king and told him about the wealth that had been disclosed to him; whereupon theking selected Heliodorus, his chancel or, and sent him with instructions to effect the removal of the reportedwealth.	7 Apollonio, a sua volta, incontratosi con il re, lo mise al corrente delle ricchezze che gli erano state denunziate. Questi, allora, scelto il ministro Eliodoro, lo inviò a Gerusalemme, dandogli ordine di compiere la confisca delle predette ricchezze.
8 Heliodorus lost no time in setting out, ostensibly to inspect the towns of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, butin fact to accomplish the king's purpose.	8 Eliodoro si mise subito in cammino, in apparenza come per visitare le città della Celesiria e della Fenicia, ma in realtà per eseguire il disegno del re.
9 On his arrival in Jerusalem, and after a hospitable reception from the high priest and the city, heannounced what had been disclosed, thus revealing the reason for his presence, and asked if this was indeedthe true situation.	9 Giunto a Gerusalemme e accolto con benevolenza dal sommo sacerdote e dalla città, riferì l'informazione ricevuta e manifestò il motivo per cui era venuto, chiedendo poi se per caso le cose stessero veramente in tal modo.
10 The high priest explained that there were funds set aside for widows and orphans,	10 Il sommo sacerdote allora gli spiegò che i depositi erano delle vedove e degli orfani
11 with some belonging to Hyrcanus son of Tobias, a man occupying a very exalted position, and thatthe whole sum, in contrast to what the evil Simon had al eged, amounted to four hundred talents of silver andtwo hundred of gold.	11 e una parte anche di Ircano, figlio di Tobia, uomo collocato in alta posizione; che, al contrario di quanto falsamente aveva detto l'empio Simone, si trattava in tutto di quattrocento talenti d'argento e di duecento d'oro;
12 He also added that it was entirely out of the question that an injustice should be done to those whohad put their trust in the sanctity of the place and in the inviolable majesty of a Temple venerated throughout theentire world.	12 e che, infine, doveva essere assolutamente impossibile far torto a coloro che avevano confidato nella santità del luogo e nella maestà e inviolabilità del tempio, venerato in tutto il mondo.
13 But Heliodorus, because of his instructions from the king, peremptorily insisted that the funds must beconfiscated for the royal exchequer.	13 Eliodoro, però, in forza degli ordini che aveva dal re, rispose che in ogni modo essi dovevano essere confiscati a favore del tesoro reale.
14 Fixing a day for the purpose, he went in to draw up an inventory of the funds. There was no littleconsternation throughout the city;	14 Fissò un giorno e si presentò per dirigere l'ispezione. In tutta la città vi era intanto una non piccola agitazione.
15 the priests in their sacred vestments prostrated themselves before the altar and prayed to Heaven, tothe Author of the law governing deposits, to preserve these funds intact for the depositors.	15 I sacerdoti, prostrati davanti all'altare nelle loro vesti sacre, invocavano il cielo che, avendo fissato la legge sui depositi, conservasse intatti tali beni a coloro che ve li avevano depositati.
16 The appearance of the high priest was enough to pierce the heart of the beholder, his expression andhis altered colour betraying the anguish of his soul;	16 Chi poi osservava l'aspetto del sommo sacerdote ne era ferito fino al cuore, poiché lo sguardo e l'alterazione del colore ne rivelavano l'angoscia dell'anima.
17 the man was so overwhelmed by fear and bodily trembling that those who saw him could not possiblymistake the distress he was suffering.	17 Su quest'uomo, infatti, si era diffuso uno spavento e insieme un tremito del corpo, per cui agli spettatori si faceva manifesto il dolore che era dentro al suo cuore.
18 People rushed headlong from the houses, intent on making public supplication because of theindignity threatening the holy place.	18 Dalle case intanto gli uomini a frotte balzavano fuori per fare una pubblica supplica a causa dell'affronto che il luogo santo stava per subire.
19 Women thronged the streets swathed in sackcloth below their breasts; girls secluded indoors camerunning, some to the doorways, some to the city walls, while others leaned out of the windows,	19 Le donne, a loro volta, cinti i cilizi sotto ai seni, affluivano per le strade, mentre le fanciulle, tenute chiuse, accorrevano alcune alle porte e altre sulle mura, mentre alcune si affacciavano dalle finestre.
20 al stretching out their hands to Heaven in entreaty.	20 Tutte, le mani tese al cielo, recitavano preghiere.
21 It was pitiful to see the people crowding together to prostrate themselves, and the foreboding of thehigh priest in his deep anguish.	21 Era commovente vedere la prostrazione confusa di quella folla e l'ansia del sommo sacerdote in preda a una grande angoscia.
22 While they were cal ing on the al -powerful Lord to preserve the deposits intact for the depositors, inful security,	22 Essi invocavano il Signore onnipotente affinché con ogni sicurezza custodisse intatti i depositi ai loro depositanti.
23 Heliodorus set about his appointed task.	23 Eliodoro, invece, eseguiva quanto aveva deciso.
24 He had already arrived with his bodyguard near the Treasury, when the Sovereign of spirits and ofevery power caused so great an apparition that all who had dared to accompany Heliodorus were dumbfoundedat the power of God and reduced to abject terror.	24 Con i suoi compagni, egli era già sul posto, presso la camera del tesoro, quando il Signore degli spiriti e di ogni potestà compì un'apparizione così grande che tutti coloro che avevano osato entrare, colpiti dalla potenza di Dio, furono travolti nella spossatezza e nello spavento.
25 Before their eyes appeared a horse richly caparisoned and carrying a fearsome rider. Rearingviolently, it struck at Heliodorus with its forefeet. The rider was seen to be accoutred entirely in gold.	25 Apparve loro un cavallo, ornato di una magnifica bardatura e con sopra un terribile cavaliere. Si muoveva impetuosamente e lanciava contro Eliodoro i suoi zoccoli anteriori. Chi lo cavalcava sembrava avere un'armatura d'oro.
26 Two other young men of outstanding strength and radiant beauty, magnificently apparel ed, appearedto him at the same time and, taking their stand on each side of him, flogged him unremittingly, inflicting strokeafter stroke.	26 Davanti a lui comparvero altri due giovani, straordinari per la forza, splendidi per bellezza e magnifici nel loro abbigliamento, i quali, postiglisi ciascuno da un lato, lo flagellavano ininterrottamente, sferrandogli numerose sferzate.
27 Suddenly Heliodorus fel to the ground, enveloped in thick darkness. His men came to his rescue andplaced him in a litter,	27 Caduto d'un tratto a terra e avvolto da una profonda oscurità, dovettero prenderlo e deporlo su una lettiga.
28 this man who but a moment before had made his way into the Treasury, as we said above, with agreat retinue and his whole bodyguard; and as they carried him away, powerless to help himself, they openlyacknowledged the sovereign power of God.	28 Colui che poco prima era entrato nella suddetta camera del tesoro con numeroso seguito e con tutta la sua guardia del corpo, fu portato via così, reso incapace d'aiutarsi da se stesso, avendo tutti riconosciuto apertamente la potenza di Dio.
29 While Heliodorus lay prostrate under the divine visitation, speechless and bereft of al hope ofdeliverance,	29 E mentre egli, a causa della divina potenza, giaceva senza parola, privo di ogni speranza di salvezza,
30 the Jews blessed the Lord who had miraculously glorified his own holy place. And the Temple, whicha little while before had been fil ed with terror and commotion, now overflowed with joy and gladness at themanifestation of the almighty Lord.	30 gli altri benedicevano il Signore che aveva glorificato il suo luogo; sicché il tempio che poco prima era pieno di terrore e spavento, quando fu apparso il Signore onnipotente si riempì di gioia e di allegrezza.
31 Some of Heliodorus' companions quickly begged Onias to entreat the Most High to grant the man hislife, lying as he did at the very point of death.	31 Subito però alcuni dei compagni di Eliodoro pregarono Onia di supplicare l'Altissimo affinché facesse grazia della vita a quell'uomo, che ormai era all'ultimo respiro.
32 The high priest, afraid that the king might suspect the Jews of some foul play concerning Heliodorus,did indeed offer a sacrifice for the man's recovery.	32 Il sommo sacerdote allora, temendo che forse il re avrebbe avuto il sospetto che qualche cattiveria fosse stata compiuta dai Giudei contro Eliodoro, offrì un sacrificio per la salute dell'uomo.
33 And while the high priest was performing the rite of expiation, the same young men again appeared toHeliodorus, wearing the same apparel and, standing beside him, said, 'Be very grateful to Onias the high priest,since it is for his sake that the Lord has granted you your life.	33 Mentre il sommo sacerdote compiva l'espiazione, gli stessi giovani comparvero di nuovo ad Eliodoro, rivestiti delle medesime vesti, e restando in piedi gli dissero: "Abbi molta gratitudine per il sommo sacerdote Onia, perché per merito suo il Signore ti ha fatto grazia della vita.
34 As for you, who have been scourged by Heaven, you must proclaim to everyone the grandeur ofGod's power.' So saying, they vanished.	34 Tu poi, flagellato dal cielo, annunzia a tutti la grande potenza di Dio". Detto ciò, divennero invisibili.
35 Heliodorus offered sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to the preserver of his life, andthen took courteous leave of Onias and marched his forces back to the king.	35 Eliodoro allora, offerto un sacrificio al Signore e fatti grandi voti a chi lo aveva fatto vivere, salutò Onia e fece ritorno dal re,
36 He openly testified to everyone about the works of the supreme God which he had seen with his owneyes.	36 rendendo testimonianza a tutti delle opere del grandissimo Dio, che egli aveva visto con i suoi occhi.
37 When the king asked Heliodorus what sort of man would be the right person to send to Jerusalem ona second occasion, he replied,	37 In seguito, avendo il re domandato a Eliodoro chi fosse adatto ad essere inviato ancora una volta a Gerusalemme, egli rispose:
38 'If you have some enemy or anyone disloyal to the state, send him there, and you wil get him backwel flogged, if he survives at al , since some peculiarly divine power attaches to the holy place.	38 "Se hai qualche nemico o avversario negli affari, mandalo là e lo riceverai poi ben flagellato, se davvero ne riuscirà salvo, poiché intorno a quel luogo vi è veramente una forza divina.
39 He who has his dwel ing in heaven watches over the place and defends it, and he strikes down anddestroys those who come to harm it.'	39 Infatti Colui che ha una abitazione nei cieli, è vigile custode di quel luogo e percuote e annienta coloro che vi si avvicinano per operarvi il male".
40 This was the outcome of the affair of Heliodorus and the preservation of the Treasury.	40 In questo modo, dunque, si svolsero i fatti relativi a Eliodoro e alla conservazione del tesoro.
