1 While the holy city was inhabited in al peace and the laws were observed as perfectly as possible,owing to the piety of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness,	1 Nel tempo adunque che la santa città godeva una piena pace, e le leggi si osservavan tutt'ora esatta mente per la pietà del pontefice Onia, e per l'odio, ch'ei portava in cuor suo all'iniquità,
2 it came about that the kings themselves honoured the holy place and enhanced the glory of the Templewith the most splendid offerings,	2 Ne avveniva, che gli stessi regi, e i principi sommo onore rendevano a quel luogo, e di ricchissimi doni ornavano il tempio:
3 even to the extent that Seleucus king of Asia defrayed from his own revenues al the expenses arisingout of the sacrificial liturgy.	3 Talmente che Seleuco re dell'Asia somministrava del suo tutte le spese occorrenti pe' sagrifizj.
4 But a certain Simon, of the tribe of Bilgah, on being appointed administrator of the Temple, came intoconflict with the high priest over the regulation of the city markets.	4 Ma Simone della tribù di Beniamin creato prefetto del tempio faceva ogni sforzo per macchinar qualche empia cosa nella città; ma se gli opponeva il sommo Sacerdote.
5 Unable to get the better of Onias, he went off to Apol onius, son of Thraseos, who was at that timecommander-in-chief of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,	5 Ed egli non potendo vincere Onia andò a ritrovare Apollonio figliuolo di Tharsea, il quale in quel tempo governava la Celesiria, e la Fenicia:
6 and made out to him that the Treasury in Jerusalem was groaning with untold wealth, that the amountcontributed was incalculable and out of all proportion to expenditure on the sacrifice, but that it could al bebrought under the control of the king.	6 E gli raccontò, che l'erario di Gerusalemme era pieno di inestimabili ricchezze, e che il tesoro del comune, il quale non serviva per le occorrenze de' sagrifizj, era immenso, e che era possibile di mettere ogni cosa nelle mani del re.
7 Apol onius met the king and told him about the wealth that had been disclosed to him; whereupon theking selected Heliodorus, his chancel or, and sent him with instructions to effect the removal of the reportedwealth.	7 Or avendo Apollonio notificate al re le ricchezze, delle quali era stata fatta a lui relazione, quegli, chiamato a se Eliodoro suo ministro, lo spedì colla commissione di portar via tutto quel denaro.
8 Heliodorus lost no time in setting out, ostensibly to inspect the towns of Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, butin fact to accomplish the king's purpose.	8 Ed Eliodoro si messe tosto in viaggio col pretesto di visitare la Celesira, e la Fenicia, ma di fatto per eseguire l'intenzione del re.
9 On his arrival in Jerusalem, and after a hospitable reception from the high priest and the city, heannounced what had been disclosed, thus revealing the reason for his presence, and asked if this was indeedthe true situation.	9 Ma giunto egli a Gerusalemme, e accolto cortesemente nella città dal pontefice Onia, raccontò a lui la scoperta fatta di quelle ricchezze, e manifestò il fine di sua venuta, e domandò se vera mente la cosa stava in quel modo.
10 The high priest explained that there were funds set aside for widows and orphans,	10 Allora il sommo Sacerdote gli dimostrò, che quegli erano depositi, e sostentamento delle vedove, e dei pupilli:
11 with some belonging to Hyrcanus son of Tobias, a man occupying a very exalted position, and thatthe whole sum, in contrast to what the evil Simon had al eged, amounted to four hundred talents of silver andtwo hundred of gold.	11 E che di quello, che era stato riferito dall'empio Simone, una parte era di Ircano Tobia uomo di gran condizione, e che in tutto v'erano quattro cento talenti d'argento, e dugento di oro:
12 He also added that it was entirely out of the question that an injustice should be done to those whohad put their trust in the sanctity of the place and in the inviolable majesty of a Temple venerated throughout theentire world.	12 Che poi dovessero rimanere defraudati quelli, i quali aveano fidato il suo a quel luogo, e a quel tempio onorato da tutta la terra per la sua dignità, e santità, non era da permettersi in verun modo.
13 But Heliodorus, because of his instructions from the king, peremptorily insisted that the funds must beconfiscated for the royal exchequer.	13 Ma quegli mettendo fuora gli ordini del re diceva, che in tutti i modi doveva esser portato al re quel tesoro.
14 Fixing a day for the purpose, he went in to draw up an inventory of the funds. There was no littleconsternation throughout the city;	14 E in un giorno determinato entrò Eliodoro nel tempio per venire a capo dell'affare; e non era leggero il tumulto per tutta quanta la città.
15 the priests in their sacred vestments prostrated themselves before the altar and prayed to Heaven, tothe Author of the law governing deposits, to preserve these funds intact for the depositors.	15 I sacerdoti stavan prostrati per terra dinanzi all'altare colle loro vesti sacerdotali, e invocavano dal cielo colui, il quale diede legge intorno ai depositi, affinchè salvi li conservasse ai depositari.
16 The appearance of the high priest was enough to pierce the heart of the beholder, his expression andhis altered colour betraying the anguish of his soul;	16 Chi poi osservava il volto del sommo Sacerdote si sentiva passar il cuore, perocché il cambiamento della faccia, e del color naturale mostravan l'interno dolore dell'animo:
17 the man was so overwhelmed by fear and bodily trembling that those who saw him could not possiblymistake the distress he was suffering.	17 Imperocché una certa mestizia, ond'egli era circondato, e l'orridezza del suo corpo manifesta rendevano l'afllizione del cuore.
18 People rushed headlong from the houses, intent on making public supplication because of theindignity threatening the holy place.	18 Altri poi concorrevano a truppe dalle loro case, con pubbliche preghiere chiedendo, che non rimanesse esposto al dispregio quel luogo.
19 Women thronged the streets swathed in sackcloth below their breasts; girls secluded indoors camerunning, some to the doorways, some to the city walls, while others leaned out of the windows,	19 E le donne co' cilizj sul petto si affollavano nelle piazze, e le stesse vergini, che stavan rinchiuse correvano verso Onia, e altre verso le mura; e alcune stavan guardando dalle finestre:
20 al stretching out their hands to Heaven in entreaty.	20 E tutte alzando le mani al cielo faceano preghiere;
21 It was pitiful to see the people crowding together to prostrate themselves, and the foreboding of thehigh priest in his deep anguish.	21 Perocché degno di compassione era lo spettacolo di quella confusa turba di gente, e del sommo Sacerdote posto in tal cimento.
22 While they were cal ing on the al -powerful Lord to preserve the deposits intact for the depositors, inful security,	22 E quelli dalla parte loro invocavano Dio onnipotente, affinchè quello, che ad essi era stato fidato restasse salvo, e intatto a chi lo avea messo nelle lor mani.
23 Heliodorus set about his appointed task.	23 Ma Eliodoro eseguiva quel, che avea risoluto, trovandosi egli stesso co' suoi sgherri presso all'erario.
24 He had already arrived with his bodyguard near the Treasury, when the Sovereign of spirits and ofevery power caused so great an apparition that all who had dared to accompany Heliodorus were dumbfoundedat the power of God and reduced to abject terror.	24 Ma lo spirito di Dio onnipotente si fece vedere, e conoscere chiaramente, di modo che tutti quelli, che ebber coraggio di ubbidire ad Eliodoro, rovesciati a terra per divina virtù, rimaser privi di forze, e pieni di spavento.
25 Before their eyes appeared a horse richly caparisoned and carrying a fearsome rider. Rearingviolently, it struck at Heliodorus with its forefeet. The rider was seen to be accoutred entirely in gold.	25 Perocché apparve loro un cavallo, che portava un terribile cavaliere, magnificamente vestito, e quello diede furiosamente dei calci coi piedi d'avanti a Eliodoro: il cavaliere poi che lo montava pareva, che avesse armi di oro.
26 Two other young men of outstanding strength and radiant beauty, magnificently apparel ed, appearedto him at the same time and, taking their stand on each side of him, flogged him unremittingly, inflicting strokeafter stroke.	26 Comparvero ancora due altri giovani di virile beltà, maestosi, ornati di vaghe vesti, i quali stando l'uno da un lato, l'altro dall'altro accanto ad Eliodoro, lo battevano senza pausa, dandogli molte sferzate.
27 Suddenly Heliodorus fel to the ground, enveloped in thick darkness. His men came to his rescue andplaced him in a litter,	27 Ed Eliodoro subitamente cadde per terra, e involto com'era da densa caligine lo pigliaron di peso, e in una sedia portatile lo miser fuora.
28 this man who but a moment before had made his way into the Treasury, as we said above, with agreat retinue and his whole bodyguard; and as they carried him away, powerless to help himself, they openlyacknowledged the sovereign power of God.	28 E quegli che nell'erario predetto era entrato con molti sgherri, e satelliti, era portato via, senza che alcuno potesse aiutarlo, fattasi visibilmente conoscere la mano di Dio:
29 While Heliodorus lay prostrate under the divine visitation, speechless and bereft of al hope ofdeliverance,	29 Ed egli per effetto della possanza di Dio giaceva muto, e senza speranza aver di salute.
30 the Jews blessed the Lord who had miraculously glorified his own holy place. And the Temple, whicha little while before had been fil ed with terror and commotion, now overflowed with joy and gladness at themanifestation of the almighty Lord.	30 Ma quelli benedicevano il Signore, perché avea glorificata la sua casa; e il tempio, che poco avanti era pieno di tumulto, e di terrori, si riempì di allegrezza, e di gaudio.
31 Some of Heliodorus' companions quickly begged Onias to entreat the Most High to grant the man hislife, lying as he did at the very point of death.	31 Allora alcuni degli amici di Eliodoro si fecer tosto a pregare Onia, che invocasse l'Altissimo, aftinché donasse la vita a lui ridotto già agli estremi.
32 The high priest, afraid that the king might suspect the Jews of some foul play concerning Heliodorus,did indeed offer a sacrifice for the man's recovery.	32 E il sommo Sacerdote considerando, che forse il re potrebbe aver sospetto, che i Giudei avesser fatto qualche tradimento ad Eliodoro, offerse vittima di salute per la sua guarigione.
33 And while the high priest was performing the rite of expiation, the same young men again appeared toHeliodorus, wearing the same apparel and, standing beside him, said, 'Be very grateful to Onias the high priest,since it is for his sake that the Lord has granted you your life.	33 E mentre il sommo Sacerdote faceva orazione, gli stessi due giovani vestiti delle stesse vestì stando presso a Eliodoro gli dissero: Rendi grazie ad Onia sommo Sacerdote, perocché per amore di lui il Signore ti dona la vita.
34 As for you, who have been scourged by Heaven, you must proclaim to everyone the grandeur ofGod's power.' So saying, they vanished.	34 Or tu gastigato da Dio racconta a tutti le meraviglie di Dio, e la sua possanza. E detto questo sparirono.
35 Heliodorus offered sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to the preserver of his life, andthen took courteous leave of Onias and marched his forces back to the king.	35 Ed Eliodoro avendo offerto sagrifizio a Dio, e fatti molti voti a lui, il quale gli avea donata la vita, e rendute grazie ad Onia, presa seco la sua gente, tornò al re.
36 He openly testified to everyone about the works of the supreme God which he had seen with his owneyes.	36 E raccontava a tutti le opere del grande Iddio, le quali egli co' proprj occhi avea vedute.
37 When the king asked Heliodorus what sort of man would be the right person to send to Jerusalem ona second occasion, he replied,	37 E avendo il re domandato ad Eliodoro chi fosse buono per essere mandato un'altra volta a Gerusalemme, rispose:
38 'If you have some enemy or anyone disloyal to the state, send him there, and you wil get him backwel flogged, if he survives at al , since some peculiarly divine power attaches to the holy place.	38 Se tu hai qualche nemico, o traditore del regno, mandalo là, e tornerà a te flagellato, se pure scamperà morte; perocché una certa virtù divina sta in quel luogo.
39 He who has his dwel ing in heaven watches over the place and defends it, and he strikes down anddestroys those who come to harm it.'	39 Imperocché colui, che ha stanza ne' cieli visita, e protegge quel luogo, e percuote, e stermina chi va a farvi alcun male.
40 This was the outcome of the affair of Heliodorus and the preservation of the Treasury.	40 Cosi adunque andaron le cose riguardo ad Eliodoro, e alla conservazione dell'erario.
