1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 Почувши, що Ніканор з військом полягли у бою, Димитрій послав знову в Юдею Вакхида й Алкіма на чолі правого крила.
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 І двигнулися вони по дорозі в Галгалу та обложили Маїсалот, що в Арбелах, і, здобувши його, вибили багато людей.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 Першого місяця 152 року вони отаборились під Єрусалимом,
4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.	4 потім з 20 000 піхоти і 2000 кінноти пішли походом на Берет.
5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.	5 Юда з 3000 добірних вояків розташувався табором в Еласі.
6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 Побачивши велику силу ворожих військ, вельми настрахались, і багато з них утекли з табору, так, що там зосталось тільки 800 чоловік.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 Побачив Юда, що його табір почав розбігатися саме тоді, як бій надходив, і серце його краялося, бо не було більше часу їх зібрати.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Він з одчаю мовив до тих, що лишились: «Устаньмо й сміливо ходімо проти противників! Може, таки зможемо проти них воювати!»
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Та військо його відмовляло: «Тепер ми нічого не зможемо зробити, хібащо тільки врятувати наше життя. Потім ми повернемося назад з братами й будемо битись, а тепер нас мало.»
10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Юда ж відрік: «Нехай того не буде, щоб таке чинити, — від них утікати! Якщо вже настав для нас час, помремо як хоробрі за наших братів і не дамо заплямити нашої слави.»
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 І вийшло військо з табору, і стало до зудару з ними. Кінноту розділено на дві частини. Пращники й лучники йшли попереду, всі найвідважніші теж були в перших лавах, тоді як Вакхид був на правім крилі.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 Лава посувалася з обидвох сторін під звук сурем. Ті, що були при Юді, й собі засурмили,
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 і земля тряслась від гуркоту військ. Битва тривала від ранку аж до вечора.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,	14 Побачивши, що Вакхид і ядро війська були праворуч, Юда зібрав навколо себе щонайхоробріших,
15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.	15 розбив праве крило і гнався за ними аж до схилів гори Азоту.
16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.	16 Тоді ліве крило, вглядівши, що праве розбите, повернулось навздогін за Юдою і тими, що були з ним, і гналися за ними з тилу.
17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.	17 Бій був запеклий, і з одного й з другого боку полягло багато вбитих.
18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.	18 Поліг і Юда, а решта повтікали.
19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.	19 Йонатан і Симон узяли Юду, свого брата, і поховали у гробниці його предків у Модіні.
20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.	20 Увесь Ізраїль плакав за ним вельми і влаштував йому довгу жалобу, та й, голосячи багато днів, промовляли:
21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'	21 «Як же то міг полягти витязь, який рятував Ізраїля?»
22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Решта дій Юди, його воєн, подвигів, які він учинив, та величі його не були записані, бо їх вельми багато було.
23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Після смерти Юди беззаконні знову піднесли голову по всіх місцевостях Ізраїля, і знову з’явилися ті, що чинять несправедливість.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 Того часу настав дуже великий голод, так що здавалось, ніби сама земля перейшла на ворожий бік.
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 Тоді Вакхид вибрав нечестивих людей і настановив їх над краєм панами;
26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.	26 ті заходилися вишукувати та вивідувати про друзів Юди і приводити їх до Вакхида, а цей карав їх і насміхався з них.
27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.	27 І настав в Ізраїлі такий великий утиск, якого не було, відколи не з’явився більш пророк.
28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,	28 Тоді зібралися всі друзі Юди та сказали Йонатанові:
29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 «Відтоді, як помер брат твій Юда, немає мужа, схожого на нього, щоб виступити проти ворогів, Вакхида та тих, що ненавидять народ наш.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 Отож: ми й вибрали тебе сьогодні, щоб ти був замість нього нашим начальником і вождем та провадив наші війни.»
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 Тоді Йонатан перейняв провід на себе, посівши місце Юди, свого брата.
32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.	32 Довідався про це Вакхид і шукав, як би його вбити.
33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.	33 Почули про те Йонатан, Симон, його брат, і всі, що були при ньому, і втекли в пустиню Текоа, де й отаборились при колодязі Асфар
34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)	34 Дізнався про це Вакхид у день суботній і з усім своїм військом перейшов через Йордан.
35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.	35 Йонатан послав був свого брата, начальника ватаги, до набатеїв, своїх приятелів, щоб дозволили примістити в них його великий обоз.
36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.	36 Але з Медави вийшли потомки Ямбрі й схопили Іоана з усім, що було в нього, і віддалилися з добиччю.
37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Та після того Йонатанові й Симонові, його братові, дали знати, що потомки Ямбрі справляють бучне весілля і з великою врочистістю ведуть з Надавату молоду, дочку одного з могутніх ханаанських вельмож.
38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 Тоді вони, пригадавши кров брата свого Іоана, пішли й сховались у гірському сховищі.
39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 Підвівши очі свої, побачили серед гармидеру почет з великими дарунками; то був молодий, що з своєю дружбою й братами йшли назустріч із бубнами, музиками та силою всякого знаряддя.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 Встали юдеї з засідки й, кинувшись на них, стали їх бити. Багато було вбито й поранено, решта ж утекла в гори, а було взято й усю їхню здобич.
41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.	41 Отак весілля стало для них смутком, а музики — плачем.
42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 І помстившися за кров свого брата, вони повернулись до багнистих берегів Йордану.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 Почув про це Вакхид і прийшов суботнього дня з великим військом на береги Йордану.
44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.	44 Тоді Йонатан сказав тим, що були при ньому: «Встаньмо до бою за життя наше, бо сьогодні воно не так, як учора чи й позавчора.
45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.	45 Ось бо війна і спереду й ззаду нас, звідсіль і звідтіль вода Йордану, багно й хащі, нема нам куди втікати.
46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'	46 Ось час закликати голосно до неба, щоб нам урятуватись від руки ворогів наших.»
47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 І розпочався бій: Йонатан простягнув руку, щоб ударити Вакхида, та той від нього назад відхилився.
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 Тут Йонатан і ті, що були при ньому, кинулись уплинь у Йордан і перепливли на той бік, але вороги не переправились через Йордан, щоб гнатися за ними.
49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.	49 Того дня полягло у Вакхида з 1000 чоловік.
50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 Повернувшись у Єрусалим, Вакхид став будувати укріплені міста в Юдеї; твердиню в Єрихоні, Емаусі, Бетороні, Бетелі, Тамматі, Фаратоні й у Тефоні, з високими мурами й воротами на засувах,
51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.	51 і поставив у них залогу, щоб непокоїти Ізраїля.
52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 Він укріпив також міста Бетсур і Гезеру й замок, зоставивши війська й запаси харчів у них.
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 Узяв як закладників синів вельмож краю і залишив їх під вартою у твердині в Єрусалимі.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition	54 Року 153, другого місяця, звелів Алкім усунути мур внутрішнього двору святині, чим зруйнував працю пророків, — і почали його валити.
55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;	55 Та тоді вхопив Алкіма параліч, і його робота припинилась. Йому заціпило уста, так що він не міг промовити й слова або розпорядитися щодо дому.
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 Тоді помер Алкім у великих муках.
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 Побачивши ж, що Алкім помер, Вакхид повернувся до царя, і земля Юдейська зазнала спокою на 2 роки.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 Всі нечестиві влаштували нараду, кажучи: «Ось Йонатан із своїми прибічниками живуть собі спокійно та безпечно. Приведім тепер Вакхида, і він захопить їх усіх за одну ніч.»
59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 І пішли вони до нього й умовилися з ним.
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,	60 І вирушив Вакхид з великим військом, пославши потайки листи всім своїм союзникам у Юдеї, щоб вони схопили Йонатана та його прибічників; та їм не пощастило, бо задум їхній викрито.
61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.	61 Зате вони схопили близько 50 з видатних краю, що були на чолі змови, і їх убили.
62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 Тоді Йонатан і Симон з прибічниками відійшли в Бетбасі, що в пустині. Вони відбудували те, що було зруйноване там, й укріпились.
63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.	63 Довідавшись про те, Вакхид зібрав усе своє військо й повідомив наперед своїх прибічників у Юдеї.
64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.	64 Прибувши сам, отаборився біля Бетбасі, і кілька днів брав його приступом, спорудивши машини.
65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.	65 Йонатан залишив Симона, брата свого, у місті, а сам вийшов в околицю з невеликим загоном
66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.	66 і розбив Одомера та його братів, а й синів Фасірона, у шатрах їхніх. Отак почались перші їхні вдатні діла, і вони вбивались у силу.
67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.	67 Симон же з прибічниками, вирвавшися з міста, підпалили машини,
68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,	68 і воювали проти Вакхида, що, розбитий, вельми засмутився, бо його намір і похід пішли нінащо.
69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.	69 Розлютившись на беззаконних, що нараяли йому йти в похід, він убив багатьох із них і вирішив повернутись у край свій.
70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.	70 Дізнавсь про це Йонатан і вислав послів до нього, щоб укласти мир і повернути бранців.
71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.	71 Вакхид прийняв його, вчинив згідно з тими умовами й присягнув йому, що не буде спричинювати йому шкоди по всі дні життя свого.
72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.	72 І видав йому бранців, що забрав був раніше в Юдеї, і повернувшись назад у край свій, вирішив більш не повертатись у край Юдейський.
73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.	73 Отак меч відпочив в Ізраїлі. Йонатан осівся в Махмасі, де почав правити народом, та винищив безбожних з-поміж Ізраїля.
