1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 Demetrio, avendo appreso che Nicànore era caduto in battaglia e il suo esercito distrutto, decise d'inviare di nuovo Bàcchide e Alcimo nella terra di Giuda alla testa dell'ala destra dell'esercito.
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 Questi presero la strada di Gàlgala e vennero ad accamparsi a Mesalot nell'Arbela, la occuparono e fecero perire molte persone.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 Nel primo mese dell'anno 152 posero il campo a Gerusalemme;

6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 Come videro quella grande moltitudine di forze, ne ebbero grande paura e molti fuggirono dal campo, non rimanendo che ottocento uomini.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 Giuda, allora, come vide che il suo esercito si era disciolto mentre la battaglia incalzava, ebbe una stretta al cuore, perché non aveva più tempo di radunarli.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Avvilito, disse a quelli che erano rimasti: "Leviamoci e marciamo contro i nostri avversari, se mai possiamo combattere contro di essi".
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Quelli però lo dissuadevano dicendo: "Non possiamo; ma ora salviamo piuttosto le nostre vite e poi ritorneremo con i nostri fratelli e combatteremo contro di loro. 10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Giuda replicò: "Non sia mai che io faccia una tal cosa, fuggendo davanti a costoro! Se la nostra ora è arrivata, moriamo con coraggio per i nostri fratelli e non lasciamo un motivo d'accusa per la nostra gloria".
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 L'esercito nemico uscì dal campo e i Giudei si disposero per affrontarlo. La cavalleria era divisa in due parti; i frombolieri e gli arcieri procedevano davanti all'esercito e in prima fila stavano tutti i più forti, mentre Bàcchide era all'ala destra.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 La falange si avvicinò dalle due parti suonando le trombe. Quelli di Giuda fecero risuonare anch'essi le trombe.
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 La terra tremò per il fragore degli eserciti e la battaglia durò dal mattino fino alla sera.

23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Dopo la morte di Giuda, i senza legge riapparvero su tutto il territorio d'Israele e tutti gli operatori di iniquità si risollevarono.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 In quei giorni, poi, vi fu una fame assai grande e il paese passò dalla loro parte.
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 Bàcchide da parte sua scelse uomini empi e li costituì signori della regione.

29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 "Da quando tuo fratello Giuda è morto, non vi è uomo simile a lui per uscire ed entrare contro i nemici e Bàcchide e contro quelli che sono ostili alla nostra gente.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 Ora, perciò, noi eleggiamo te al suo posto, nostro capo e duce per combattere le nostre guerre".
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 Così Gionata in quello stesso giorno assunse il comando e si levò al posto di Giuda, suo fratello.
32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.	32 Quando lo seppe, Bàcchide cercava di ucciderlo.

37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Dopo questo fatto, fu riferito a Gionata e a Simone suo fratello: "I figli di Iambri celebrano un grande sposalizio e da Nàdabat accompagnano la sposa, figlia di uno dei più grandi signori di Canaan, con grande pompa".

39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 Alzarono i loro occhi per osservare ed ecco, tra un vocìo confuso, un grande corteo con lo sposo, i suoi amici e i suoi fratelli, che muovevano incontro a quelli con tamburi, strumenti musicali e grande apparato.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 Si gettarono allora su di essi dal loro nascondiglio e li massacrarono. 42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 Avendo in tal modo vendicato il sangue del loro fratello, se ne tornarono alla palude del Giordano.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 Bàcchide, avendolo saputo, andò anch'egli in giorno di sabato fino alle rive del Giordano con un grande esercito.

47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 Si attaccò battaglia e Gionata stese la mano per colpire Bàcchide, ma questi gli sfuggì piegandosi indietro.
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 Allora Gionata balzò con i suoi nel Giordano e a nuoto raggiunsero l'altra parte. Gli altri però non attraversarono il Giordano dopo di loro.

50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 Bàcchide tornò a Gerusalemme, fece costruire molte fortificazioni nella Giudea, ossia le fortezze di Gèrico, Emmaus, Bet-Oron, Betel, Tamnata, Piraton e Tefon, con alte mura, porte e sbarre

52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 Fortificò ancora la città di Bet-Zur, di Ghezer e l'Acra e vi pose presidi e provviste di viveri.
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 Prese inoltre i figli dei capi della regione come ostaggi e li pose sotto custodia nell'Acra a Gerusalemme.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. 55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. La sua bocca si chiuse e restò paralizzata, cosicché non poté più articolare parola e impartire ordini riguardo alla sua casa.
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 Alcimo morì in quel tempo, con grande spasimo
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 e Bàcchide, appena vide che Alcimo era morto, fece ritorno dal re e così la terra di Giuda rimase tranquilla per due anni.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 Tutti gli iniqui tennero questo consiglio: "Ecco, Gionata e i suoi vivono nella calma con fiducia. 59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 Andarono a consigliarsi con lui
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. 62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 Dopo di ciò, Gionata con Simone e i suoi si ritirò a Bet-Basi nel deserto, ne riparò le rovine e la fortificò.

68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him.
