NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 Cuando supo Demetrio que Nicanor y su ejército habían caído en la guerra, envió a la tierra de Judá, en una nueva expedición, a Báquides y Alcimo con el ala derecha de su ejército.
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 Tomaron el camino de Galilea y pusieron cerco a Mesalot en el territorio de Arbelas; se apoderaron de ella y mataron mucha gente.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 El primer mes del año 152 acamparon frente a Jerusalén,
4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.	4 de donde partieron con 20.000 hombres y 2.000 jinetes en dirección a Beerzet.
5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.	5 Judas tenía puesto su campamento en Eleasá y estaban con él 3.000 hombres escogidos.
6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 Pero al ver la gran muchedumbre de los enemigos, les entró mucho miedo y muchos escaparon del campamento; no quedaron más que ochocientos hombres.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 Judas vio que su ejército estaba desbandado y que la batalla le apremiaba, y se le quebrantó el corazón, pues no había tiempo de volverlos a juntar.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Aunque desfallecido, dijo a los que le habían quedado: «Levantémonos y subamos contra nuestros adversarios por si podemos hacerles frente».
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Trataban de disuadirle diciéndole: «No podemos; salvemos nuestras vidas de momento y volvamos luego con nuestros hermanos para combatir contra ellos, que ahora estamos pocos».
10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Judas replicó: «¡Eso nunca, obrar así y huir ante ellos! Si nuestra hora ha llegado, muramos con valor por nuestros hermanos y no dejemos tacha a nuestra gloria».
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 Salió la tropa del campamento y se ordenó para irles al encuentro: la caballería dividida en dos escuadrones, arqueros y honderos en avanzadilla, y los más aguerridos en primera línea;
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 Báquides ocupaba el ala derecha. La falange se acercó por los dos lados y tocaron las trompetas. Los que estaban con Judas tocaron también las suyas,
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 y la tierra se estremeció con el estruendo de los ejércitos. Se trabó el combate y se mantuvo desde el amanecer hasta la caída de la tarde.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,	14 Vio Judas que Báquides y sus mejores tropas se encontraban en la parte derecha; se unieron a él los más esforzados,
15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.	15 y derrotaron al ala derecha y la persiguieron hasta los montes de Azara.
16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.	16 Pero el ala izquierda, al ver derrotada el ala derecha, se volvió sobre los pasos de Judas y los suyos, por detrás.
17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.	17 La lucha se encarnizó y cayeron muchos de uno y otro bando.
18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.	18 Judas cayó y los demás huyeron.
19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.	19 Jonatán y Simón tomaron a su hermano Judas y le dieron sepultura en el sepulcro de sus padres en Modín.
20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.	20 Todo Israel le lloró, hizo gran duelo por él y muchos días estuvieron repitiendo esta lamentación:
21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'	21 «¡Cómo ha caído el héroe que salvaba a Israel!»
22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Las demás empresas de Judas, sus guerras, proezas que realizó, ocasiones en que alcanzó gloria, fueron demasiado numerosas para ser escritas.
23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Con la muerte de Judas asomaron los sin ley por todo el territorio de Israel y levantaron cabeza todos los que obraban la iniquidad.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 Hubo entonces un hambre extrema y el país se pasó a ellos.
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 Báquides escogió hombres impíos y los puso al frente del país.
26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.	26 Se dieron éstos a buscar con toda su suerte de pesquisas a los amigos de Judas y los llevaban a Báquides, que les castigaba y escarnecía.
27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.	27 Tribulación tan grande no sufrió Israel desde los tiempos en que dejaron de aparecer profetas.
28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,	28 Entonces todos los amigos de Judas se reunieron y dijeron a Jonatán:
29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 «Desde la muerte de tu hermano Judas no tenemos un hombre semejante a él que salga y vaya contra los enemigos, contra Báquides y contra los que odian a nuestra nación.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 Por eso, te elegimos hoy a ti para que, ocupando el lugar de tu hermano, seas nuestro jefe y guía en la lucha que sostenemos».
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 En aquel momento Jonatán tomó el mando como sucesor de su hermano Judas.
32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.	32 Al enterarse Báquides trataba de hacer morir a Jonatán.
33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.	33 Pero Jonatán lo supo y su hermano Simón y todos sus partidarios y huyeron al desierto de Técoa, donde establecieron su campamento junto a las aguas de la cisterna de Asfar.
34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)	34 (Báquides se enteró un día de sábado y pasó con todas las tropas al lado de allá del Jordán.)
35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.	35 Jonatán envió a su hermano, jefe de la tropa, a pedir a sus amigos los nabateos autorización para dejar con ellos su impedimenta, que era mucha.
36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.	36 Pero los hijos de Amrai, los de Medabá, hicieron una salida, se apoderaron de Juan y de cuanto llevaba y se alejaron con su presa.
37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Después de esto, Jonatán y su hermano Simón, recibieron la noticia de que los hijos de Amrai celebraban una espléndida boda y traían de Nabatá, en medio de gran pompa, a la novia, hija de uno de los principales de Canaán.
38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 Recordaron entonces el sangriento fin de su hermano Juan y subieron a ocultarse al abrigo de la montaña.
39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 Al alzar los ojos, vieron que avanzaba en medio de confusa algazara una numerosa caravana, y que a su encuentro venía el novio, acompañado de sus amigos y hermanos, con tambores, música y gran aparato.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 Salieron entonces de su emboscada y cayeron sobre ellos para matarlos. Muchos cayeron muertos y los demás huyeron a la montaña. Se hicieron con todos sus despojos.
41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.	41 La boda acabó en duelo y la música en lamentación.
42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 Una vez tomada venganza de la sangre de su hermano, se volvieron a las orillas pantanosas del Jordán.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 Al enterarse Báquides, vino el día de sábado con numerosa tropa a las riberas del Jordán.
44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.	44 Jonatán dijo a su gente: «Levantémonos y luchemos por nuestras vidas, que hoy no es como ayer y anteayer.
45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.	45 Delante de nosotros y detrás, la guerra; por un lado y por otro, las aguas del Jordán, las marismas, las malezas: no hay lugar a donde retirarse.
46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'	46 Levantad, pues, ahora la voz al Cielo para salvaros de las manos de vuestros enemigos».
47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 Entablado el combate, Jonatán tendió su mano para herir a Báquides y éste le esquivó echándose atrás,
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 con lo que Jonatán y los suyos pudieron lanzarse al Jordán y ganar a nado la orilla opuesta. Sus enemigos no atravesaron el río en su persecución.
49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.	49 Unos mil hombres del ejército de Báquides sucumbieron aquel día.
50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 Vuelto a Jerusalén, hizo Báquides levantar ciudades fortificadas en Judea: la fortaleza de Jericó, Emaús, Bet Jorón, Betel, Tamnatá, Faratón y Tefón, con altas murallas, puertas y cerrojos
51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.	51 y puso en ellas guarniciones que hostilizaran a Israel.
52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 Fortificó también la ciudad de Bet Sur, Gázara y la Ciudadela, y puso en ellas tropas y depósitos de víveres.
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 Tomó como rehenes a los hijos de los principales de la región y los dejó bajo guardia en la Ciudadela de Jerusalén.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition	54 El segundo mes del año 153, ordenó Alcimo demoler el muro del atrio interior del Lugar Santo. Destruía con ello la obra de los profetas. Había comenzado la demolición,
55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;	55 cuando en aquel tiempo sufrió Alcimo un ataque y su obra quedó parada. Se le obstruyó la boca y se le quedó paralizada, de suerte que no le fue posible ya pronunciar palabra ni dar disposiciones en la tocante a su casa.
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 Alcimo murió entonces en medio de grandes sufrimientos.
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 Cuando Báquides vio que había muerto Alcimo, se volvió adonde el rey y hubo tranquilidad en el país de Judá por espacio de dos años.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 Todos los sin ley se confabularon diciendo: «Jonatán y los suyos viven tranquilos y confiados. Hagamos, pues, venir ahora a Báquides y los prenderá a todos ellos en una sola noche».
59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 Fueron a comunicar el plan con él,
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,	60 y Báquides se puso en marcha con un fuerte ejército. Envió cartas secretas a sus alidados de Judea ordenándoles prender a Jonatán y a los suyos. Pero no pudieron, porque fueron conocidas sus intenciones,
61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.	61 antes bien ellos prendieron a unos cincuenta hombres de la región, cabecillas de esta maldad, y les dieron muerte.
62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 A continuación, Jonatán, Simón y los suyos se retiraron a Bet Basí, en el desierto, repararon lo que en aquella plaza estaba derruido y la fortificaron.
63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.	63 En sabiéndolo Báquides, juntó a toda su gente y convocó a sus partidarios de Judea.
64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.	64 Llegó y puso cerco a Bet Basí, la atacó durante muchos días y construyó ingenios de guerra.
65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.	65 Jonatán, dejando a su hermano Simón en la ciudad, salió por la región y fue con una pequeña tropa,
66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.	66 con la que derrotó en su campamento a Odomerá y a sus hermanos, así como a los hijos de Fasirón. Estos empezaron a herir y a subir con las tropas.
67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.	67 Simón y sus hombres, por su parte, salieron de la ciudad y dieron fuego a los ingenios.
68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,	68 Trabaron combate con Báquides, le derrotaron y le dejaron sumido en profunda amargura, porque habían fracasado su plan y su ataque.
69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.	69 Montó en cólera contra los hombres sin ley que le habían aconsejado venir a la región, mató a muchos de ellos y decidió volverse a su tierra.
70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.	70 Al saberlo, le envió Jonatán legados para concertar con él la paz y conseguir que les devolviera los prisioneros.
71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.	71 Báquides aceptó y accedió a las peticiones de Jonatán. Se comprometió con juramento a no hacerle mal en todos los días de su vida,
72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.	72 y le devolvió los prisioneros que anteriormente había capturado en el país de Judá. Partió luego para su tierra y no volvió más a territorio judío.
73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.	73 Así descansó la espada en Israel. Jonatán se estableció en Mikmas, comenzó a juzgar al pueblo e hizo desaparecer de Israel a los impíos.
