1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 Lorsque Démétrius apprit que Nicanor était tombé avec ses hommes au cours du combat, il envoya de nouveau Bakidès et Alkime à la tête de l’aile droite de l’armée, dans le pays de Juda.
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 Ils prirent la route de la Galilée et mirent le siège devant Mésalot, dans le territoire d’Arbèles; ils s’en emparèrent et massacrèrent beaucoup de ses habitants.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 Le premier mois de l’an 152, ils établirent leur camp en face de Jérusalem,
4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.	4 puis ils partirent pour Bérée; ils avaient avec eux 20 000 fantassins et 2 000 cavaliers.
5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.	5 Judas, de son côté, avait dressé son camp à Éléasa, il avait avec lui 3 000 soldats parmi les meilleurs.
6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 Lorsqu’ils virent que les ennemis étaient si nombreux, ils furent effrayés et beaucoup s’enfuirent du camp: il n’en resta que 800.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 Judas vit que son armée se dispersait alors qu’il ne pouvait refuser le combat; il fut consterné car il n’avait plus le temps de rassembler les fuyards.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Malgré cela, il dit à ceux qui étaient restés avec lui: “Debout! Marchons contre nos ennemis et nous verrons bien si nous pouvons les vaincre!”
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Ses compagnons essayèrent de le détourner, ils lui disaient: “Pour le moment nous ne pouvons rien faire d’autre que sauver notre vie. Nous reviendrons ensuite reprendre la lutte avec nos frères, mais nous sommes vraiment trop peu nombreux.”
10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Judas leur répondit: “Je n’agirai pas ainsi, que Dieu me garde de fuir devant eux! Si notre heure est arrivée, mourons comme des braves pour nos frères, mais ne faisons rien qui puisse salir notre honneur.”
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 L’armée sortit de son camp pour les affronter, ils partagèrent la cavalerie en deux; les frondeurs et les archers marchaient sur le devant et les premiers rangs de l’armée étaient formés des plus courageux.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 Bakidès était avec l’aile droite, les fantassins s’avançaient des deux côtés au son de la trompette. Ceux qui étaient avec Judas sonnèrent également de la trompette,
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 et la terre fut comme ébranlée par le cri des armées. Le combat s’engagea au matin et il dura jusqu’au soir.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,	14 Judas vit que Bakidès et les plus solides de ses troupes se trouvaient à droite; avec les plus courageux, qui se rassemblèrent autour de lui,
15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.	15 ils enfoncèrent l’aile droite de Bakidès et la poursuivirent jusqu’au mont Azara.
16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.	16 Mais en voyant l’aile droite enfoncée, les Syriens qui formaient l’aile gauche se lancèrent derrière Judas et ses compagnons et les prirent à revers.
17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.	17 Le combat devint acharné et beaucoup tombèrent dans les deux camps;
18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.	18 Judas tomba lui aussi et le reste de ses hommes s’enfuit.
19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.	19 Jonathan et Simon emportèrent le corps de leur frère Judas et l’ensevelirent dans le tombeau de ses pères à Modine.
20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.	20 Tout Israël le pleura et fit un grand deuil sur lui, répétant pendant plusieurs jours cette lamentation:
21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'	21 “Comment est-il tombé, le héros qui sauvait Israël?”
22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Le reste des actions de Judas, ses guerres, ses actes courageux et ses titres de gloire n’ont pas été écrits car il y en avait trop.
23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Après la mort de Judas, les hors-la-loi se manifestèrent sur tout le territoire d’Israël, et tous ceux qui faisaient le mal réapparurent.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 En ces jours-là une grande famine sévit dans tout le pays et les gens passèrent de l’autre côté.
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 Bakidès choisit donc des hommes sans foi ni loi pour gouverner le pays.
26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.	26 Ils soumirent les partisans de Judas à des perquisitions et des enquêtes, ils les faisaient comparaître devant Bakidès qui les punissait et les humiliait.
27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.	27 Israël connut une oppression si terrible qu’il n’y en avait pas eu de pareille depuis la fin du temps des prophètes.
28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,	28 Alors tous les partisans de Judas se rassemblèrent, ils dirent à Jonathan:
29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 “Depuis la mort de ton frère Judas, nous n’avons plus un homme de sa valeur pour faire la guerre à nos ennemis, aux gens de Bakidès et à tous ceux qui détestent notre nation.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 C’est pourquoi nous t’avons choisi pour le remplacer à notre tête comme chef et comme général; tu conduiras nos combats.”
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 Et à partir de ce moment-là Jonathan prit le commandement et la succession de Judas son frère.
32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.	32 Bakidès apprit la chose et il chercha à faire mourir Jonathan.
33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.	33 Lorsqu’ils le surent, Jonathan, son frère Simon et tous leurs compagnons, s’enfuirent au désert de Tékoa et campèrent près de la Citerne d’Asfar.
34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)	34 Le jour du sabbat Bakidès l’apprit, et il traversa lui aussi le Jourdain avec toute son armée.
35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.	35 Jonathan envoya son frère, qui avait un commandement dans l’armée, chez ses amis les Nabatéens; il voulait déposer chez eux ses bagages qui étaient considérables.
36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.	36 Mais les gens de Médaba, les Yambrites, sortirent pour s’emparer de Jean et de tout ce qu’il avait, puis ils prirent la fuite avec leur butin.
37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Un peu plus tard Jonathan et son frère Simon apprirent que les Yambrites célébraient un grand mariage et amenaient en grand cortège depuis Nabatha la fiancée; c’était la fille d’un des principaux personnages de Canaan.
38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 Ils se rappelèrent alors le meurtre de leur frère Jean, et ils montèrent se cacher dans la montagne.
39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 Ils aperçurent bientôt une foule nombreuse et bruyante, puis le fiancé avec ses amis et ses frères qui s’avançaient à la tête d’un cortège avec des tambourins, des musiques et de riches vêtements militaires.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 Les Juifs, du haut de leur embuscade, se jetèrent sur eux et les massacrèrent; ils tuèrent beaucoup de monde tandis que les survivants s’enfuyaient vers la montagne. Toutes leurs dépouilles furent emportées.
41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.	41 Ainsi les noces se changèrent en deuil et les joyeuses musiques en lamentations.
42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 Ils vengèrent ainsi le sang de leur frère, puis ils regagnèrent les rives marécageuses du Jourdain.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 C’est cela même que Bakidès avait appris; il s’avança donc le jour du sabbat jusqu’aux berges du Jourdain avec une armée nombreuse.
44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.	44 Jonathan dit alors à ses hommes: “Debout, défendons-nous, car aujourd’hui ce ne sera pas comme les autres fois!
45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.	45 Le combat est là devant nous, et derrière nous c’est l’eau du Jourdain: le marécage ou le fourré, il n’y a pas de chemin pour battre en retraite.
46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'	46 Maintenant donc, criez vers le Ciel pour qu’il vous sauve de vos ennemis!”
47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 La bataille commença et Jonathan étendit la main pour frapper Bakidès, mais celui-ci échappa en se jetant en arrière.
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 Jonathan et ses compagnons sautèrent dans le Jourdain et rejoignirent l’autre rive à la nage, mais les ennemis ne franchirent pas le fleuve à leur suite.
49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.	49 Ce jour-là environ 1 000 hommes tombèrent du côté de Bakidès.
50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 Bakidès revint à Jérusalem et il se mit à construire des forteresses en Judée: Jéricho, Emmaüs, Beth-Horon, Béthel, Tamnatha, Faraton et Téfon. Il y fit de grands remparts avec des portes garnies de verrous.
51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.	51 Dans chacune d’elles il laissa une garnison pour maintenir la répression contre Israël.
52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 Il fortifia Beth-Sour, Gazer et la Citadelle, il y mit des hommes armés avec des vivres en réserve.
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 Il prit des otages, les fils des chefs du pays, et les fit placer sous bonne garde dans la Citadelle de Jérusalem.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition	54 Au deuxième mois de l’an 153, Alkime donna l’ordre d’abattre le mur de la cour intérieure du sanctuaire qui avait été édifié par des prophètes. 55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;	55 Alkime eut une attaque et ses projets en restèrent là. Il avait la bouche paralysée et ne pouvait plus prononcer un seul mot, ni donner des ordres au sujet de sa maison.
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 Alkime mourut ainsi dans de grandes souffrances.
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 Voyant qu’Alkime était mort, Bakidès retourna auprès du roi, si bien que le pays de Juda fut en paix pendant deux ans.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 Tous les hors-la-loi tinrent conseil, ils se dirent: “Jonathan et les siens vivent maintenant en paix et en sécurité. Rappelons donc Bakidès pour qu’il les fasse tous arrêter en une seule nuit.”
59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 Ils partirent le trouver et ils en discutèrent avec lui,
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,	60 Bakidès se mit donc en route avec une forte troupe et il envoya en secret des lettres à tous ses partisans de Judée pour leur demander d’arrêter Jonathan et ses compagnons. Mais il n’eut pas de succès car les autres avaient eu connaissance de son projet.
61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.	61 Jonathan et ses compagnons arrêtèrent dans le pays une cinquantaine d’hommes qui étaient à l’origine de ce projet criminel, et ils les mirent à mort.
62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 Jonathan et Simon se retirèrent ensuite avec leurs partisans dans le désert à Beth-Bassi. Ils réparèrent cette ville en ruine et la fortifièrent.
63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.	63 Lorsque Bakidès l’apprit, il réunit tous ses hommes et fit appel à ses partisans de Judée.
64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.	64 Il établit son camp près de Beth-Bassi et durant de longs jours il fit construire des machines pour l’attaquer.
65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.	65 Jonathan laissa son frère Simon dans la ville; il en sortait avec quelques hommes pour faire des expéditions aux alentours.
66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.	66 Il attaqua le campement d’Odoméra et de ses frères, et celui des fils de Fasiron. Les ennemis se décidèrent à frapper eux aussi, et ils montèrent avec leurs troupes.
67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.	67 De leur côté, Simon et ses hommes firent une sortie et brûlèrent les machines de siège.
68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,	68 Ils attaquèrent ensuite Bakidès et lui infligèrent une telle défaite qu’il tomba dans un profond découragement parce que son plan et son attaque avaient échoué.
69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.	69 Il se retourna plein de colère contre les mécréants qui lui avaient conseillé de venir dans le pays; il en massacra un grand nombre et décida de retourner chez lui avec ses gens.
70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.	70 En apprenant cela, Jonathan lui envoya des hommes pour lui proposer la paix et le retour des prisonniers.
71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.	71 Bakidès accepta et resta fidèle à sa promesse, il jura à Jonathan de ne plus chercher à lui faire du mal durant tout le reste de sa vie.
72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.	72 Bakidès rendit les prisonniers qu’il avait faits auparavant dans le pays de Juda, puis il retourna chez lui pour ne plus jamais revenir dans le pays des Juifs.
73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.	73 Il y eut un temps de paix en Israël, et Jonathan s’installa à Macmas d’où il jugea le peuple; il fit disparaître les impies du milieu d’Israël.
