1 Maccabees 9

1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 - Intanto, quando Demetrio seppe che Nicànore ed il suo esercito eran caduti in battaglia, risolse di mandare di nuovo Bacchide ed Alcimo in Giudea, e l’ala destra con loro.
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 Presero la via che mena a Galgala e s’accamparono a Masalot, in Arbela; l’occuparono, e v’uccisero molti.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 Nel primo mese dell’anno centoclnquantadue, si diressero con Pesercito a Gerusalemme ;
4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.	4 e ventimila fanti con duemila cavalieri si levarono e andarono in Berea.
5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.	5 Giuda poi aveva posto il campo in Laisa, ed aveva con sè tremila uomini scelti.
6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 Questi però vedendo la moltitudine così numerosa dell’esercito nemico, ebbero gran paura, e molti di loro si ritrassero dal campo, e non ne rimasero che ottocento.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 Quando Giuda vide che il suo esercito si disgregava, mentre la battaglia si faceva imminente, si sentì spezzare il cuore non avendo più tempo di rimetterli insieme, e si perse d’animo.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Disse a quelli ch’eran rimasti: « Leviamoci, e andiamo contro i nostri avversarii, che forse potremo combatter con loro ».
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Ma quelli ne lo distoglievano, dicendo: «Non vi riusciremo; salviamo per ora la nostra vita, e torniamo ai nostri fratelli; dopo, potremo combatter con quelli; ma ora siam pochi».
10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Disse Giuda: « Non sia mai che facciamo tal cosa, di fuggire dinanzi a loro; se la nostra ora è venuta, moriremo da valorosi pei nostri fratelli, e non macchiamo di tal onta la nostra gloria ».
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 L’esercito nemico uscì dagli accampamenti, venendo loro incontro, coi cavalieri divisi in due all, i fromboiieri e gli arcieri davanti, e tutti i più forti nelle prime file.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 Bacchide poi era nell’ala destra, e le schiere s’avanzavano da due parti dando flato alle trombe.
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 Allora anche quelli che erano al seguito di Giuda alzarono essi pure le grida; la terra tremò al rumore di quelli eserciti, e durò la battaglia da mattina a sera.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,	14 Giuda conobbe che l’ala più folte dell’esercito di Bacchide era la destra, e vi concorsero con lui tutti i più valorosi.
15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.	15 Essi la sgominarono, ed inseguirono i fuggitivi sino al monte d’Azoto.
16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.	16 Quelli dell'ala sinistra, quando videro la disfatta della destra, si misero ad inseguire a tergo Giuda e quelli ch’eran con luì.
17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.	17 La zuffa s’accanì, e molti caddero da una parte e dall’altra.
18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.	18 Cadde anche Giuda, ed i rimanenti fuggirono.
19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.	19 Gionata e Simeone presero Giuda loro fratello, e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro de' padri suoi nella città di Modin.
20 Al Israel wept and mourned him deeply and for many days they repeated this dirge.	20 Tutto il popolo d’Israele lo pianse di gran pianto e per molti giorni,
21 'What a downfall for the strong man, the man who kept Israel safe!'	21 e dicevano: «Come mai è caduto quel valoroso, che faceva salvo il popolo d’ Israele? ».
22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Tutti gli altri racconti delle battaglie di Giuda, e delle sue prodezze e della sua grandezza, qui non si scrivono, perchè furono innumerevoli.
23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Ora avvenne che dopo la morte di Giuda in tutto Israele si ribellarono gli empii, e tutti gli operatori di iniquità rialzarono il capo.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 In quel tempo fu fame grande, e tutta la regione di essi insieme a quelli passò dalla parte di Bacchide;
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 il quale scelse alcuni di quelli empii, e li pose a capo della regione.
26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.	26 Essi cercavano e scovavano gli amici di Giuda, e li conducevano a Bacchide, che si vendicava su loro e ne faceva strazio.
27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.	27 Fu dunque in Israele una grande tribolazione, quale non era mal stata da che non s’era più visto in Israele un profeta.
28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,	28 Allora si trovarono insieme tutti gli amici di Giuda, e dissero a Gionata:
29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 « Da che è morto il tuo fratello Giuda, non abbiamo un uomo simile a lui, da opporre a Bacchide ed agli altri nemici della nostra gente.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 Oggi dunque abbiamo scelto te, perchè tu sia, invece di lui, nostro principe, e duce della nostra guerra ».
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 Da allora Gionata prese il comando, e si fece avanti, in luogo di Giuda suo fratello.
32 Bacchides, when he heard the news, made plans to kil Jonathan.	32 Bacchide lo seppe, e cercava di ucciderlo.
33 But this became known to Jonathan, his brother Simon and al his supporters, and they took refuge inthe desert of Tekoa, camping by the water-supply at Asphar storage-well.	33 Ma Gionata e Simone suo fratello, e tutti quelli che eran con lui di ciò informati fuggirono nel deserto di Tecua, e s’accamparono presso l’acqua del lago di Asfar.
34 (Bacchides came to know of this on the Sabbath day, and he too crossed the Jordan with his entirearmy.)	34 Bacchide lo riseppe, ed un giorno di sabato venne, egli e tutto il suo esercito, di là dal Giordano.
35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.	35 Gionata allora mandò un suo fratello, a capo di una spedizione, a pregare i Nabutei suol amici che prendessero in deposito tutte le sue salmerie che eran copiose.
36 The sons of Amrai, however, those of Medeba, intercepted them, captured John and everything hehad and made off with their prize.	36 Ma vennero da Madaba quelli della stirpe di Jambri, e rapirono Giovanni con tutto ciò che aveva, e poi fuggirono con quella preda.
37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Or, dopo questo fatto, Gionata e Simone suo fratello vennero a sapere che i figli di Jambri erano per far delle nozze in gran pompa, conducendo sposa da Madaba con grand’apparato la figlia di uno dei primi principi di Canaan.
38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 Allora si ricordarono del sangue di Giovanni loro fratello e si mossero, e si nascosero in un riparo del monte.
39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 E levando gli occhi, ecco videro un gran movimento ed un corteo numeroso; lo sposo coi suol amici e parenti veniva incontro a loro, con timpani e musicanti ed armati in gran numero.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 Allora uscirono dal nascondigli addosso a loro, e li uccisero ; molti caddero sotto le spade, gli altri fuggivano pei monti, ed essi presero tutte le loro spoglie.
41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.	41 Così le nozze si cangiarono in lutto, e la voce dei loro musici In lamento.
42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 Fatta cosi vendetta del sangue del loro fratello, tornarono alla riva del Giordano.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 Bacchide ne fu avvisato, e venne, un giorno di sabato, con grandi forze, sino alla riva del Giordano.
44 Jonathan said to his men, 'Up! Let us fight for our lives, for today it is not as in the old days.	44 Gionata disse ai suoi: «Leviamoci, e combattiamo contro i nostri nemici! Le cose non vanno oggi come altre volte;
45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.	45 abbiamo il nemico di faccia, di qua e di là l’acqua del Giordano, le rive, paludi e boschi, e non c’è via di uscita.
46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'	46 Ora pertanto gridate al cielo, per esser liberati dalle mani del vostri nemici ». Fu dunque attaccata la battaglia.
47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 Gionata aveva steso la mano per colpire Bacchlde, ma questi gli sfuggì.
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 Gionata ed i suoi si gettarono nel Giordano, e lo passarono a nuoto.
49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.	49 Caddero in quel giorno, della parte di Bacchlde, mille uomini; [gli altri] tornarono a Gerusalemme.
50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 E fortificarono nella Giudea con mura altissime e porte e catenacci alcune città, le cittadelle di Gerico, Ammaum, Betoron, Betel, Tarnnata, Fara e Topo.
51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.	51 Bacchide vi pose un presidio a danno di Israele,
52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 e fortificò Betsura e Gazara e la rocca [di Gerusalemme], ponendovi guarnigioni e vettovaglie;
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 e presi in ostaggio i figli dei maggiori della regione, li tenne prigionieri nella rocca di Gerusalemme.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition	54 Nell'anno centocinquantatrè, nel mese secondo, Alcimo ordinò che fossero abbattuti i muri dell'interno della casa santa, distruggendo i lavori dei profeti. Ed incominciò ad abbatterli.
55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;	55 Ma in quel tempo Alcimo fu percosso [da Dio], ed impedito ne' suoi progetti. Gli si chiuse la bocca, e fu tocco da paralisi, senza poter più dire parola nè provvedere alla sua casa,
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 e mori In quel tempo fra grandi tormenti.
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 Quando Bacchlde vide che Alcimo era morto, fece ritorno al re, e la terra ebbe pace per due anni.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 Ma tutti gli empii pensarono e dissero: «Ecco che Gionata ed i suoi se ne stanno pacifici, e senza sospetto; facciamo venir Bacchlde, e in una sola notte li prenderà tutti ».
59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 Andarono dunque, e gli dettero questo consiglio.
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,	60 Egli si mosse per venire con numeroso esercito ; e mandò segretamente lettere a' suoi amici che erano in Giudea, perchè prendessero Gionata e quelli ch’eran con lui. Ma non vi riuscirono, perchè il loro piano fu da essi risaputo.
61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.	61 Allora [Gionata] fece prendere cinquanta uomini della regione, che erano stati a capo delle milizie e li mise a morte.
62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 E Gionata e Simone, e quelli che eran con lui, si ritirarono in Betbessi nel deserto, rialzarono le sue rovine e la fortificarono.
63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.	63 Bacchide lo seppe, riunì tutte le sue forze, e mandò avviso a’ suoi partigiani della Giudea.
64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.	64 Venne, e s’accampò per molto tempo.
65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.	65 Gionata lasciò nella città il fratello Simone, ed uscì alla campagna, con un drappello;
66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.	66 assalì nei loro accampamenti Odares ed i suoi fratelli, ed i figli di Faseron, e cominciò a riportare successi ed aumentar le sue forze.
67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.	67 Simone poi, e quelli che erano con lui, fecero una sortita dalla città, incendiarono le macchine,
68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,	68 ed assalirono Bacchlde, che fu da loro disfatto, e rimase grandemente umiliato che il suo progetto e la sua spedizione fossero stati inutili.
69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.	69 Sdegnato contro quelli Iniqui che gli avevan dato il consiglio di venire nella loro regione, ne uccise molti, e quanto a sè pensò di tornare nella sua terra col rimasti.
70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.	70 Gionata lo seppe e gli mandò ambasciatori per far pace con lui, e rendergli i prigionieri.
71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.	71 L’accettò volentieri, e fece secondo le sue proposte; giurò di non fargli più alcun male in tutto il tempo della sua vita;
72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.	72 gli rese i prigionieri che aveva fatti nella terra di Giuda ; e partitosi, tornò nel suo paese, nè fu rivisto in quelle regioni.
73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.	73 La guerra ebbe fine in Israele.
