1 Demetrius, hearing that Nicanor and his army had fal en in battle, sent Bacchides and Alcimus asecond time into Judaea, and with them the right wing of his army.	1 Frattanto Demetrio, udita la morte di Nicanore, e la sconfitta del suo esercito, risolvi di mnndar di nuovo nella Giudea Bacchide e Alcimo, e con essi la destra ala del suo esercito.
2 They took the road to Galilee and besieged Mesaloth in Arbela, and captured it, putting many people todeath.	2 E preser la strada, che mena a Galgala, posero il campo a Masaloth, che é in Arbelle, e la presero, e uccisero molta gente.
3 In the first month of the year 152, they encamped outside Jerusalem;	3 Il primo mese dell'anno cento cinquantadue si avvicinarona coll'esercito a Gerusalemme:
4 they then moved on, making their way to Beer-Zaith with twenty thousand foot and two thousand horse.	4 E si mossero, e andarono a Berea con venti mila fanti e due mila cavalli.
5 Judas lay in camp at Elasa, with three thousand picked men.	5 E Giuda era alloggiato a Laisa con tremila uomini scelti:
6 When they saw the huge size of the enemy forces they were terrified, and many slipped out of thecamp, until no more than eight hundred of the force were left.	6 E i suoi osservando la moltitudine di quell'esercito, si sbigottirono grandemente, e molti abbandonarono gli alloggiamenti, e non vi rimasero se non ottocento soldati.
7 With battle now inevitable, Judas realised that his army had melted away; he was aghast, for he had notime to ral y them.	7 E Giuda veggendo diminuito cotanto l'esercito, e il nemico, che lo stringeva dappresso, si sentì serrare il cuore e venir meno, perche' non avea campo di andare a riunirli.
8 Yet, dismayed as he was, he said to those who were left, 'Up! Let us face the enemy; we may yet have the strength to fight them.'	8 Ma disse a quei che restavano: Su via, andiamo incontro ai nostri nemici, e tentiamo la battaglia.
9 His men tried to dissuade him, declaring, 'We have no strength for anything but to escape with our livesthis time; then we can come back with our brothers to fight them; by ourselves we are too few.'	9 Ma quelli nel distoglievano, dicendo: Noi non abbiam forze da farlo: ma per adesso mettiamoci in salvo, e torniamo a trovare i nostri fratelli, e allora verremo a combattere con costoro, perocché ora noi siamo pochi.
10 Judas retorted, 'That I should do such a thing as run away from them! If our time has come, at leastlet us die like men for our countrymen, and leave nothing to tarnish our reputation.'	10 Giuda però disse: Lungi da noi il fuggire da loro, e se è venuta la nostra ora muoiasi valorosamente pei nostri fratelli, e non si imprima questa macchia alla nostra gloria.
11 The army marched out of camp and drew up, facing the enemy. The cavalry was drawn up in twosquadrons; the slingers and archers marched in the van of the army, and al the best fighters were put in thefront rank;	11 E l'esercito nemico mosse il campo, e venne loro incontro, la cavalleria divisa in due parti, i frombolatori e gli arcieri alla testa dell'esercito, e nelle prime file tutta gente di maggior valore.
12 Bacchides was on the right wing. The phalanx advanced from between the two squadrons, soundingthe trumpets; the men on Judas' side also blew their trumpets,	12 E Bacchide era nel corno destro, e le schiere si avvicinavano da due lati, e le trombe sonavano:
13 and the earth shook with the noise of the armies. The engagement lasted from morning until evening.	13 E i soldati di Giuda alzarono anche essi le grida, e la terra si mosse al rumor degli eserciti, e la zuffa durò dal mattino fino alla sera.
14 Judas saw that Bacchides and the main strength of his army lay on the right; al the stout-heartedral ied to him,	14 Ma Giuda osservò, che il meglio dell'esercito di Bacchide era all'ala destra; ed egli prese seco i più valorosi:
15 and they crushed the right wing, pursuing them as far as the Azara Hil s.	15 Co' quali sconfisse quella destra ala, e inseguì il nemico fino al monte di Azoto.
16 But when the Syrians on the left wing saw that the right had been broken, they turned and followedhot on the heels of Judas and his men to take them in the rear.	16 Ma quelli dell'ala sinistra veggendo rotta l'ala destra si mossero a seguir Giuda e i suoi alle spalle.
17 The fight became desperate, and there were many casualties on both sides.	17 E rincrudì la battaglia, e molti furono feriti e uccisi dall'una e dall'altra parte.
18 Judas himself fel , and the remnant fled.	18 E Giuda fu ucciso, e gli altri fuggirono.
19 Jonathan and Simon took up their brother Judas and buried him in his ancestral tomb at Modein.	19 E Gionata e Simone presero il corpo di Giuda loro fratello, e gli diedero sepoltura nel sepolcro dei padri suoi nella città di Modin.

22 The other deeds of Judas, the battles he fought, the exploits he performed, and all his titles togreatness have not been recorded; but they were very many.	22 Ma altre guerre di Giuda e altre azioni grandi del suo valore non le abbiamo descritte, perché troppo grande ne è il numero.
23 After the death of Judas, the renegades came out of hiding throughout Israel and al the evil-doersreappeared.	23 Ma dopo la morte di Giuda scapparon fuora gli iniqui in tutto il paese d'Israele, e alzaron il capo tutti quelli, pe' quali era un mestiere il mal fare.
24 At that time there was a severe famine, and the country went over to their side.	24 In quel tempo fu grandissima fame, e tutto il paese e gli abitanti si soggettarono a Bacchide.
25 Bacchides deliberately chose the enemies of religion to administer the country.	25 E Bacchide fece scelta degli uomini empii, e li pose al governo del paese:
26 These traced and searched out the friends of Judas and brought them before Bacchides, who il -treated and mocked them.	26 Eglino andavan in cerca con tutta diligenza degli amici di Giuda, e li presentavano a Bacchide ed ei si vendicava sopra di loro, e gli straziava.
27 A terrible oppression began in Israel; there had been nothing like it since the disappearance ofprophecy among them.	27 E grande fu la tribolazione d'Israele, e tale, che la simile non vi fa dal tempo, che non si vide profeta in Israele.
28 The friends of Judas then al united in saying to Jonathan,	28 E si adunarono tutti gli amici di Giuda, e dissero a Gionata:
29 'Since your brother Judas died, there has been no one like him to head the resistance against ourenemies, people like Bacchides and others who hate our nation.	29 Dopo la morte di Giuda tuo fratello non si trova uomo simile a lui, che prenda la pugna contro Bacchide e contro i nemici di nostra gente.
30 Accordingly, we have today chosen you to take his place as our ruler and leader and to fight ourcampaigns.'	30 Ora noi ti abbiam oggi eletto per principe in luogo di lui, e condottiere nelle nostre guerre.
31 Whereupon, Jonathan took command, in succession to his brother Judas.	31 E Gionata accettò allora il principato succedendo in luogo di Giuda suo fratello.

35 Jonathan sent his brother, who was one of his commanders, to ask his friends the Nabataeans tostore their considerable baggage for them.	35 E Gionata mandò suo fratello capo del popolo a pregare i Nabathei suoi amici, che imprestasser loro i lor preparativi di guerra, che erano grandi.

37 Later, Jonathan and his brother Simon were told that the sons of Amrai were celebrating an importantwedding, and were escorting the bride, a daughter of one of the great notables of Canaan, from Nabata with alarge retinue.	37 Dopo tali cose fu riferito a Gionata e a Simone suo fratello, che i figliuoli di Jambri celebravano con solennità un matrimonio, e conducevano con gran pompa da Madaba la sposa, la quale era figliuola di uno de' principi grandi di Chanaan.
38 Remembering the bloody end of their brother John, they went up and hid under cover of the mountain.	38 E si ricordarono della uccisione di Giovanni loro fratello, e si mossero, e si messero a coperto dietro un monte.
39 As they were keeping watch, a noisy procession came into sight with a great deal of baggage, and thebridegroom, with his groomsmen and his family, came out to meet it with tambourines and a band, and rich,warlike display.	39 Quando, alzati gli occhi, videro a un tratto un gran tumulto e un grandioso apparato; e lo sposo andava incontro a quelli coi suoi amici e fratelli al suono di timpani e altri strumenti musicali, con molta gente armata.
40 The Jews rushed down on them from their ambush and killed them, inflicting heavy casualties; thesurvivors escaped to the mountain, leaving their entire baggage train to be captured.	40 E usciron dall'imboscata, e dieder loro addosso, e molti furon feriti e uccisi, e il resto fuggirono alla montagna: e quelli presero le loro spoglie:
41 Thus, the wedding was turned into mourning and the music of their band into lamentation.	41 E le nozze si cambiarono in duolo, e i loro concerti di musica in lamentazioni.
42 Having in this way avenged in ful the blood of their brother, they returned to the marshes of theJordan.	42 Ed eglino rendicarono il sangue del loro fratello, e se ne tornarono verso le rive del Giordano.
43 As soon as Bacchides heard this, he came on the Sabbath day with a considerable force to the steepbanks of the Jordan.	43 E avendo ciò risaputo Bacchide, andò con grosso esercito in giorno di sabato fino alla riva del Giordano.

45 You can see, we shall have to fight on our front and to our rear; we have the waters of the Jordan onone side, the marsh and scrub on the other, and we have no line of withdrawal.	45 Perocchè in faccia è il nemico, da destra e da sinistra le acque del Giordano e le sue rive e paduli e boscaglie, e non abbiam dove voltarci.
46 This is the moment to call on Heaven, to deliver you from the clutches of your enemies.'	46 Or voi alzate le voci al cielo, affinche siate liberati dai vostri nemici. E s'attaccò lo zuffa.
47 The engagement was begun by Jonathan, who aimed a blow at Bacchides, but the Syrian disengagedhimself and withdrew,	47 E Gionata tentò di uccider Bacchide; ma questi lo schivo tirondosi indietro:
48 whereupon Jonathan and his men leapt into the Jordan and swam to the other bank; the enemy didnot, however, cross the Jordan in pursuit.	48 E Gionata e i suoi si gettarono nel Giordano, e lo passarono a nuoto sotto gli occhi de' nemici.
49 That day, Bacchides lost about a thousand men.	49 E de' soldati di Bacchide perirono in quel giorno mille uomini, e se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme;
50 Bacchides went back to Jerusalem and began fortifying some of the Judaean towns: the fortresses ofJericho, Emmaus, Beth-Horon, Bethel, Timnath, Pharathon and Tephon, with high wal s and barred gates,	50 E fecero delle piazze forti nella Giudea,la fortezza di Jerico e di Ammaum e di Bethoron e di Bethet e di Thamnata e di Phara e di Thopo con alle mura e con parte e sbarre.
51 and stationed a garrison in each of them to harass Israel.	51 E Bacchide vi pose presidj, affinché molestassero Israele:
52 He also fortified the town of Beth-Zur, Gezer and the Citadel, and placed troops in them with suppliesof provisions.	52 E fortificò Bethsura e Gazara e la città della, e vi pose presidio e provvisioni da bocca.
53 He took the sons of the leading men of the country as hostages, and had them placed under guard inthe Citadel of Jerusalem.	53 E prese in ostaggio i figliuoli de' principali del paese, e li chiuse nella cittadella di Gerusalemme.
54 In the year 153, in the second month, Alcimus ordered the demolition of the wall of the inner court ofthe sanctuary, destroying the work of the prophets. Alcimus had just begun the demolition	54 Or nell'anno cento cinquantatré il secondo mese Alcimo comando che fosse atterrato il muro della casa santa interiore, e che si distruggessero le opere de' profeti; e cominciò a farle atterrare.
55 when he suffered a stroke, and his work was interrupted. His mouth became obstructed, and hisparalysis made him incapable of speaking at al or giving directions to his household;	55 Allora Alcimo fu percosso (da Dio), e i suoi disegni rimaser sospesi, ed egli perdè la favella e perde l'uso delle membra per paralisia, e non poté più dir parola, nè dar sesto alle cose di sua casa.
56 it was not long before he died in great agony.	56 E morì in quel tempo Alcimo in mezzo a grandi dolori.
57 On the death of Alcimus, Bacchides went back to the king, and Judaea was left in peace for twoyears.	57 E Bacchide vedendo, come Alcimo era morto,se ne tornò al re: e il paese fu in calma per due anni.
58 The renegades then al agreed on a plan. 'Now is the time,' they said, 'while Jonathan and hissupporters are living in peace and are ful of confidence, for us to bring back Bacchides, and he wil arrest the lotof them in one night.'	58 Ma tutti i cattivi uomini formaron questo disegno, e dissero: Gionata e i suoi se ne stanno tranquilli senza verun timore: ora è tempo di far venire Bacchide, il quale ti premierà tutti in una notte.
59 So they went to him and reached an understanding.	59 E andarono a dare a lui questo consiglio.
60 Bacchides at once set out with a large force, and sent secret instructions to al his allies in Judaea toseize Jonathan and his supporters. But they were unable to do this because their plan became known,	60 Ed ei si mosse per venire con grosso esercito, e scrisse segretamente ai suoi amici, che erano nella Giudea, che mettesser le mani addosso a Gionata e alla sua gente: ma non poteron farlo, perché questi ebber vento dei loro disegni.
61 and Jonathan and his men arrested some fifty of the men of the country who were ringleaders in theplot, and put them to death.	61 E Gionata fece prigioni cinquanta uomini del paese, che erano i primi autori di questa trama, e li fece morire:
62 Jonathan and Simon then retired with their partisans to Beth-Bassi in the desert; they rebuilt theruinous parts of the place and fortified it.	62 E Gionata e Simone colla loro gente si ritirarono a Bethbessen, la quale è nel deserto, e ne ristorarono le rovine, e la fortificarono.
63 When Bacchides heard this, he mustered his whole force and notified his adherents in Judaea.	63 E venne ciò alle orecchie di Bacchide, il quale messe insieme tutte le sue schiere, e mandò avviso a quelli che erano nella Giudea.
64 He then proceeded to lay siege to Beth-Bassi, the fighting was protracted, and he constructed siege-engines.	64 E andò a porre il campo sopra Bethbessen, e l'assedio per molti giorni, e alzò le sue macchine.
65 Jonathan, however, leaving his brother Simon in the town, broke out into the countryside with ahandful of men.	65 Ma Gionata lasciò nella città Simone suo fratello, e andò pel paese, e tornò con assai gente,
66 He launched a blow at Odomera and his brothers, and at the sons of Phasiron in their encampment;whereupon, these too came into the struggle, joining forces with him.	66 E assali Odaren e i suoi fratelli e i figliuoli di Phaseron nelle loro tende, e principiava a fare strage, e a far mostra grande del suo valore:
67 Simon and his people, meanwhile, made a sortie from the town and set fire to the siege-engines.	67 Quando Simone e la sua gente uscirono dalla città, e dieder fuoco alle macchine,
68 Taking the offensive against Bacchides, they defeated him. He was greatly disconcerted to find thathis plan and his assault had come to nothing,	68 E assalirono Bacchide, e lo sconfissero, e lo rendettero molto afflitto per essere andati in fumo i suoi disegni e i suoi tentativi.
69 and vented his anger on those renegades who had induced him to enter the country, putting many ofthem to death; he then decided to take his own troops home.	69 E sdegnato con que' malvagi uomini, i quali lo avean consigliato a venir nel loro paese, ne fece morire molti: ed egli risolvè di tornarsene col rimanente de' suoi al suo paese.
70 Discovering this, Jonathan sent envoys to negotiate peace terms and the release of prisoners withhim.	70 Lo che avendo saputo Gionata, gli spedì ambasciadori per far pace con lui, e rendergli i prigionieri.
71 Bacchides agreed to this, accepting his proposals and swearing never to seek occasion to harm himfor the rest of his life.	71 Ed ei volentieri gli ammesse, e fece quello che volle Gionata, e giurò, che per tutto il tempo di sua vita non farebbe a lui verun male.
72 Having surrendered to Jonathan those prisoners he had earlier taken in Judaea, he turned about andwithdrew to his own country, and never again came near their frontiers.	72 E restitui a lui i prigionieri, che avea fatti per l'avanti nel paese di Giuda: e si parti, e se n' andò al suo paese, e non ritornò mai più nella Giudea.
73 The sword no longer hung over Israel, and Jonathan settled in Michmash, where he began to judgethe people and to rid Israel of the godless.	73 E fini in Israele la guerra. E Gionata risedeva a Machmas, e ivi diede principio ad amministrar giustizia al popolo, e sterminò da Israele gli empi.
