1 Gorgias took with him five thousand foot and a thousand picked cavalry, and the force moved off bynight	1 Gorgias, tomando 5.000 hombres y mil jinetes escogidos, partió con ellos de noche
2 with the object of attacking the Jewish position and dealing them an unexpected blow; the men fromthe Citadel were there to guide him.	2 para caer sobre el campamento de los judíos y vencerles por sopresa. La gente de la Ciudadela los guiaba.
3 Judas got wind of it and himself moved off with his fighters to strike at the royal army at Emmaus,	3 Pero lo supo Judas y salió él a su vez con sus guerreros con intención de batir al ejército real que quebada en Emaús
4 while its fighting troops were stil dispersed outside the camp.	4 mientras estaban todavía dispersas las tropas fuera del campamento.
5 Hence, when Gorgias reached Judas' camp, he found no one and began looking for the Jews in themountains. 'For', he said, 'we have got them on the run.'	5 Gorgias llegó de noche al campamento de Judas y al no encontrar a nadie, los estuvo buscando por las montañas, pues decía: «Estos van huyendo de nosotros».
6 First light found Judas in the plain with three thousand men, although these lacked the armour andswords they would have wished.	6 Al rayar el día, apareció Judas en la llanura con 3.000 hombres. Sólo que no tenían las armas defensivas y las espadas que hubiesen querido,
7 They could now see the gentile encampment with its strong fortifications and cavalry surrounding it,clearly people who understood warfare.	7 mientras veían el campamento de los gentiles fuerte, bien atrincherado, rodeado de la caballería y todos diestros en la guerra.
8 Judas said to his men, 'Do not be afraid of their numbers, and do not flinch at their attack.	8 Judas entonces dijo a los que con él iban: «No temáis a esa muchedumbre ni su pujanza os acobarde.
9 Remember how our ancestors were delivered at the Red Sea when Pharaoh was pursuing them inforce.	9 Recordad cómo se salvaron nuestros padres en el mar Rojo, cuando Faraón les perseguía con su ejército.
10 And now let us cal on Heaven: if he cares for us, he wil remember his covenant with our ancestorsand will destroy this army confronting us today;	10 Clamemos ahora al Cielo, a ver si nos tiene piedad, recuerda la alianza de nuestros padres y quebranta hoy este ejército ante nosotros.
11 then all the nations wil know for certain that there is One who ransoms and saves Israel.'	11 Entonces reconocerán todas las naciones que hay quien rescata y salva a Israel».
12 The foreigners looked up and, seeing the Jews advancing against them,	12 Los extranjeros alzaron los ojos y, viendo a los judíos que venían contra ellos,
13 came out of the camp to join battle. Judas' men sounded the trumpet	13 salieron del campamento a presentar batalla. Los soldados de Judas hicieron sonar la trompeta
14 and engaged them. The gentiles were defeated and fled towards the plain	14 y entraron en combate. Salieron derrotados los gentiles y huyeron hacia la llanura.
15 and al the stragglers fel by the sword. The pursuit continued as far as Gezer and the plains ofIdumaea, Azotus and Jamnia, and the enemy lost about three thousand men.	15 Los rezagados cayeron todos a filo de espada. Los persiguieron hasta Gázara y hasta las llanuras de Idumea, Azoto y Yamnia. Cayeron de ellos al pie de 3.000 hombres.
16 Breaking off the pursuit, Judas returned with his men	16 Judas, al volver con su ejército de la persecución,
17 and said to the people, 'Never mind the booty, for we have another battle ahead of us.	17 dijo a su gente: «Contened vuestros deseos de botín, que otra batalla nos amenaza;
18 Gorgias and his troops are still near us in the mountains. First stand up to our enemies and fight them,and then you can safely collect the booty.'	18 Gorgias y su ejército se encuentran cerca de nosotros en la montaña. Haced frente ahora a nuestros enemigos y combatid con ellos; después podréis con tranquilidad haceros con el botín».
19 The words were hardly out of Judas' mouth, when a detachment came into view, peering down fromthe mountain.	19 Apenas había acabado Judas de hablar, cuando se dejó ver un destacamento que asomaba por la montaña.
20 Observing that their own troops had been routed and that the camp had been fired -- since the smoke,which they could see, attested the fact-	20 Advirtieron éstos que los suyos habían huido y que el campamento había sido incendiado, como se lo daba a entender el humo que divisaban.
21 they were panic-stricken at the sight; and when, furthermore, they saw Judas' troops drawn up forbattle on the plain,	21 Viéndolo se llenaron de pavor y al ver por otro lado en la llanura el ejército de Judas dispuesto para el combate,
22 they al fled into Philistine territory.	22 huyeron todos al país de los filisteos.
23 Judas then turned back to plunder the camp, and a large sum in gold and silver, with violet and sea-purple stuffs, and many other valuables were carried off.	23 Judas se volvió entonces al campamento para saquearlo. Recogieron mucho oro y plata, telas teñidas en púrpura marina, y muchas otras riquezas.
24 On their return, the Jews chanted praises to Heaven, singing, 'He is kind and his love is everlasting!'	24 De regreso cantaban y bendecían al Cielo: “Porque es bueno, porque es eterno su amor.”
25 That day had seen a remarkable deliverance in Israel.	25 Hubo aquel día gran liberación en Israel.
26 Those of the foreigners who had escaped came and gave Lysias an account of all that had happened.	26 Los extranjeros que habían podido escapar se fueron donde Lisias y le comunicaron todo lo que había pasado.
27 The news shocked and dismayed him, for affairs in Israel had not gone as he intended, and the resultwas quite the opposite to what the king had ordered.	27 Al oírles quedó consternado y abatido porque a Israel no le había sucedido lo que él quería ni las cosas habían salido como el rey se lo tenía ordenado.
28 The next year he mobilised sixty thousand picked troops and five thousand cavalry with the intentionof finishing off the Jews.	28 Al año siguiente, reunió Lisias 60.000 hombres escogidos y 5.000 jinetes para combatir contra ellos.
29 They advanced into Idumaea and made their base at Beth-Zur, where Judas met them with tenthousand men.	29 Llegaron a Idumea y acamparon en Bet Sur. Judas fue a su encuentro con 10.000 hombres
30 When he saw their military strength he offered this prayer, 'Blessed are you, Saviour of Israel, whoshattered the mighty warrior's attack at the hand of your servant David, and delivered the Philistine camp into thehands of Jonathan son of Saul, and his armour-bearer.	30 y cuando vio aquel poderoso ejército, oró diciendo: «Bendito seas, Salvador de Israel, que quebraste el ímpetu del poderoso guerrero por mano de tu siervo David y entregaste el ejército de los filisteos en manos de Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, y de su escudero.
31 Crush this expedition in the same way at the hands of your people Israel; let their troops and cavalrybring them nothing but shame.	31 Pon de la misma manera este ejército en manos de tu pueblo Israel y queden corridos de sus fuerzas y de su caballería.
32 Sow panic in their ranks, confound the confidence they put in their numbers and send them reeling indefeat.	32 Infúndeles miedo, rompe la confianza que en su fuerza ponen y queden abatidos con su derrota.
33 Overthrow them by the sword of those who love you, and all who acknowledge your name wil singyour praises.'	33 Hazles sucumbir bajo la espada de los que te aman, y entonen himnos en tu alabanza todos los que conocen tu nombre».
34 The two forces engaged, and five thousand men of Lysias' troops fel in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Vinieron a las manos y cayeron en el combate unos 5.000 hombres del ejército de Lisias.
35 Seeing the rout of his army and the courage of Judas' troops and their readiness to live or die nobly,Lysias withdrew to Antioch, where he recruited mercenaries for a further invasion of Judaea in even greaterstrength.	35 Al ver Lisias la derrota sufrida por su ejército y la intrepidez de los soldados de Judas, y cómo estaban resueltos a vivir o morir valerosamente, partió para Antioquía, donde reclutó mercenarios con ánimo de presentarse de nuevo en Judea con fuerzas más numerosas.
36 Judas and his brothers then said, 'Now that our enemies have been defeated, let us go up to purifythe sanctuary and dedicate it.'	36 Judas y sus hermanos dijeron: «Nuestros enemigos están vencidos; subamos, pues, a purificar el Lugar Santo y a celebrar su dedicación».
37 So they marshal ed the whole army, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Se reunió todo el ejército y subieron al monte Sión.
38 There they found the sanctuary deserted, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt down, and vegetationgrowing in the courts as it might in a wood or on some mountain, while the storerooms were in ruins.	38 Cuando vieron el santuario desolado, el altar profanado, las puertas quemadas, arbustos nacidos en los atrios como en un bosque o en un monte cualquiera, y las salas destruidas,
39 They tore their garments and mourned bitterly, putting dust on their heads.	39 rasgaron sus vestidos, dieron muestras de gran dolor y pusieron ceniza sobre sus cabezas.
40 They prostrated themselves on the ground, and when the trumpets gave the signal they cried aloud toHeaven.	40 Cayeron luego rostro en tierra y a una señal dada por las trompetas, alzaron sus clamores al Cielo.
41 Judas then ordered his men to keep the Citadel garrison engaged until he had purified the sanctuary.	41 Judas dio orden a sus hombres de combatir a los de la Ciudadela hasta terminar la purificación del Lugar Santo.
42 Next, he selected priests who were blameless and zealous for the Law	42 Luego eligió sacerdotes irreprochables, celosos de la Ley,
43 to purify the sanctuary and remove the stones of the 'Pollution' to some unclean place.	43 que purificaron el Lugar Santo y llevaron las piedras de la contaminación a un lugar inmundo.
44 They discussed what should be done about the altar of burnt offering which had been profaned,	44 Deliberaron sobre lo que había de hacerse con el altar de los holocaustos que estaba profanado.
45 and very properly decided to pul it down, rather than later be embarrassed about it since it had beendefiled by the gentiles. They therefore demolished it	45 Con buen parecer acordaron demolerlo para evitarse un oprobio, dado que los gentiles lo habían contaminado. Lo demolieron, pues,
46 and deposited the stones in a suitable place on the hil of the Dwel ing to await the appearance of aprophet who should give a ruling about them.	46 y depositaron sus piedras en el monte de la Casa, en un lugar conveniente, hasta que surgiera un profeta que diera respuesta sobre ellas.
47 They took unhewn stones, as the Law prescribed, and built a new altar on the lines of the old one.	47 Tomaron luego piedras sin labrar, como prescribía la Ley, y contruyeron un nuevo altar como el anterior.
48 They restored the Holy Place and the interior of the Dwel ing, and purified the courts.	48 Repararon el Lugar Santo y el interior de la Casa y santificaron los atrios.
49 They made new sacred vessels, and brought the lamp-stand, the altar of incense, and the table intothe Temple.	49 Hicieron nuevos objetos sagrados y colocaron dentro del templo el candelabro, el altar del incienso y la mesa.
50 They burned incense on the altar and lit the lamps on the lamp-stand, and these shone inside theTemple.	50 Quemaron incienso sobre el altar y encendieron las lámparas del candelabro, que lucieron en el Templo.
51 They placed the loaves on the table and hung the curtains and completed al the tasks they hadundertaken.	51 Pusieron panes sobre la mesa, colgaron las cortinas y dieron fin a la obra que habían emprendido.
52 On the twenty-fifth of the ninth month, Chislev, in the year 148 they rose at dawn	52 El día veinticinco del noveno mes, llamado Kisléu, del año 148, se levantaron al romper el día
53 and offered a lawful sacrifice on the new altar of burnt offering which they had made.	53 y ofrecieron sobre el nuevo altar de los holocaustos que habían construido un sacrificio conforme a la Ley.
54 The altar was dedicated, to the sound of hymns, zithers, lyres and cymbals, at the same time of yearand on the same day on which the gentiles had original y profaned it.	54 Precisamente fue inaugurado el altar, con cánticos, cítaras, liras y címbalos, en el mismo tiempo y el mismo día en que los gentiles la habían profanado.
55 The whole people fel prostrate in adoration and then praised Heaven who had granted them success.	55 El pueblo entero se postró rostro en tierra, y adoró y bendijo al Cielo que los había conducido al triunfo.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar, joyful y offering burnt offerings, communionand thanksgiving sacrifices.	56 Durante ocho días celebraron la dedicación del altar y ofrecieron con alegría holocaustos y el sacrificio de comunión y acción de gracias.
57 They ornamented the front of the Temple with crowns and bosses of gold, renovated the gates andstorerooms, providing the latter with doors.	57 Adornaron la fachada del Templo con coronas de oro y pequeños escudos, restauraron las entradas y las salas y les pusieron puertas.
58 There was no end to the rejoicing among the people, since the disgrace inflicted by the gentiles hadbeen effaced.	58 Hubo grandísima alegría en el pueblo, y el ultraje inferido por los gentiles quedó borrado.
59 Judas, with his brothers and the whole assembly of Israel, made it a law that the days of thededication of the altar should be celebrated yearly at the proper season, for eight days beginning on the twenty-fifth of the month of Chislev, with rejoicing and gladness.	59 Judas, de acuerdo con sus hermanos y con toda la asamblea de Israel, decidió que cada año, a su debido tiempo y durante ocho días a contar del veinticinco del mes de Kisléu, se celebrara con alborozo y regocijo el aniversario de la dedicación del altar.
60 They then proceeded to build high wal s with strong towers round Mount Zion, to prevent the gentilesfrom coming and riding roughshod over it as in the past.	60 Por aquel tiempo, levantaron en torno al monte Sión altas murallas y fuertes torres, no fuera que otra vez se presentaran como antes los gentiles y lo pisotearan.
61 Judas stationed a garrison there to guard it; he also fortified Beth-Zur, so that the people would havea fortress confronting Idumaea.	61 Puso Judas allí una guarnición que lo defendiera y para que el pueblo tuviese una fortaleza frente a Idumea, fortificó Bet Sur.
