Exodus 21

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 There was once a man in the land of Uz cal ed Job: a sound and honest man who feared God andshunned evil.	1 Il y avait jadis, au pays de Uç, un homme appelé Job: un homme intègre et droit qui craignait Dieu et segardait du mal.
2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.	2 Sept fils et trois filles lui étaient nés.
3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East.	3 Il possédait aussi 7.000 brebis, 3.000 chameaux, 500 paires de boeufs et 500 ânesses, avec de trèsnombreux serviteurs. Cet homme était le plus fortuné de tous les fils de l'Orient.
4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them.	4 Ses fils avaient coutume d'aller festoyer chez l'un d'entre eux, à tour de rôle, et d'envoyer chercher leurstrois soeurs pour manger et boire avec eux.
5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time.	5 Or, une fois terminé le cycle de ces festins, Job les faisait venir pour les purifier et, le lendemain, àl'aube, il offrait un holocauste pour chacun d'eux. Car il se disait: "Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et maudit Dieudans leur coeur!" Ainsi faisait Job, chaque fois.
6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan.	6 Le jour où les Fils de Dieu venaient se présenter devant Yahvé, le Satan aussi s'avançait parmi eux.
7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.'	7 Yahvé dit alors au Satan: "D'où viens-tu" -- "De rôder sur la terre, répondit-il, et d'y flâner."
8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'	8 Et Yahvé reprit: "As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'a point son pareil sur la terre: un hommeintègre et droit, qui craint Dieu et se garde du mal!"
9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?	9 Et le Satan de répliquer: "Est-ce pour rien que Job craint Dieu?
10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside.	10 Ne l'as-tu pas entouré d'une haie, ainsi que sa maison et son domaine alentour? Tu as béni toutes sesentreprises, ses troupeaux pullulent dans le pays.
11 But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions: then, I warrant you, he wil curse you toyour face.'	11 Mais étends la main et touche à ses biens; je te jure qu'il te maudira en face" --
12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh.	12 "Soit! dit Yahvé au Satan, tous ses biens sont en ton pouvoir. Evite seulement de porter la main surlui." Et le Satan sortit de l'audience de Yahvé.
13 On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother's house,	13 Le jour où les fils et les filles de Job étaient en train de manger et de boire chez leur frère aîné,
14 a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at theirside,	14 un messager vint dire à Job: "Tes boeufs labouraient et les ânesses paissaient à leurs côtés
15 when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the servants to the sword: Ialone have escaped to tel you.'	15 quand les Sabéens ont fondu sur eux et les ont enlevés, après avoir passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée.Moi, le seul rescapé, je me suis sauvé pour te l'annoncer."
16 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God', he said, 'has fal enfrom heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.'	16 Il parlait encore quand un autre survint et dit: "Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel; il a brûlé les brebis etles pâtres jusqu'à les consumer. Moi, le seul rescapé, je me suis sauvé pour te l'annoncer."
17 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'threebands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put the servants to the sword: I alone haveescaped to tell you.'	17 Il parlait encore quand un autre survint et dit: "Les Chaldéens, divisés en trois bandes, ont fait un raidcontre les chameaux et ils les ont enlevés, après avoir passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée. Moi, le seul rescapé, jeme suis sauvé pour te l'annoncer."
18 He had not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and daughters', he said,'were eating and drinking at their eldest brother's house,	18 Il parlait encore quand un autre survint et dit: "Tes fils et tes filles étaient en train de manger et de boiredu vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné.
19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.'	19 Et voilà qu'un vent violent a soufflé du désert. Il a heurté les quatre coins de la maison et celle-ci esttombée sur les jeunes gens, qui ont péri. Moi, le seul rescapé, je me suis sauvé pour te l'annoncer."
20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself	20 Alors Job se leva, déchira son vêtement, se rasa la tête. Puis, tombant sur le sol, il se prosterna
21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh!	21 et dit: "Nu, je suis sorti du sein maternel, nu, j'y retournerai. Yahvé avait donné, Yahvé a repris: que lenom de Yahvé soit béni!"
22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God.	22 En toute cette infortune, Job ne pécha point et il n'adressa pas à Dieu de sots reproches.
