NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 It was then that Moses and the Israelites sang this song in Yahweh's honour: I shall sing to Yahweh,for he has covered himself in glory, horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.1 Tunc cecinit Moyses et filii Israel carmen hoc Domino, et dixerunt:
“ Cantemus Domino,
gloriose enim magnificatus est:
equum et ascensorem eius
deiecit in mare!
2 Yah is my strength and my song, to him I owe my deliverance. He is my God and I shal praise him,my father's God and I shal extol him.2 Fortitudo mea et robur meum Dominus,
et factus est mihi in salutem.
Iste Deus meus,
et glorificabo eum;
Deus patris mei,
et exaltabo eum!
3 Yahweh is a warrior; Yahweh is his name.3 Dominus quasi vir pugnator;
Dominus nomen eius!
4 Pharaoh's chariots and army he has hurled into the sea the pick of his officers have been drowned inthe Sea of Reeds.4 Currus pharaonis et exercitum eius
proiecit in mare;
electi bellatores eius
submersi sunt in mari Rubro.
5 The ocean has closed over them; they have sunk to the bottom like a stone.5 Abyssi operuerunt eos,
descenderunt in profundum quasi lapis.
6 Your right hand, Yahweh, wins glory by its strength, your right hand, Yahweh, shatters your foes,6 Dextera tua, Domine,
magnifice in fortitudine,
dextera tua, Domine,
percussit inimicum.
7 and by your great majesty you fell your assailants; you unleash your fury, it consumes them like chaff.7 Et in multitudine gloriae tuae
deposuisti adversarios tuos;
misisti iram tuam,
quae devoravit eos sicut stipulam.
8 A blast from your nostrils and the waters piled high; the waves stood firm as a dyke; the bed of the seabecame firm ground.8 Et in spiritu furoris tui
congregatae sunt aquae;
stetit ut agger
unda fluens,
coagulatae sunt abyssi
in medio mari.
9 The enemy said, 'I shal give chase and overtake, 'I shal share out the spoil and glut myself on them, 'Ishall draw my sword, my hand wil destroy them.'9 Dixit inimicus:
"Persequar, comprehendam,
dividam spolia,
implebitur anima mea;
evaginabo gladium meum,
interficiet eos manus mea!".
10 You blew with your breath, the sea closed over them; they sank like lead in the terrible waters.10 Flavit spiritus tuus,
et operuit eos mare;
submersi sunt quasi plumbum
in aquis vehementibus.
11 Yahweh, who is like you, majestic in sanctity, who like you among the holy ones, fearsome of deed,worker of wonders?11 Quis similis tui
in diis, Domine?
Quis similis tui,
magnificus in sanctitate,
terribilis atque laudabilis,
faciens mirabilia?
12 You stretched your right hand out, the earth swallowed them!12 Extendisti manum tuam,
devoravit eos terra.
13 In your faithful love you led out the people you had redeemed, in your strength you have guided themto your holy dwel ing.13 Dux fuisti in misericordia tua
populo, quem redemisti,
et portasti eum in fortitudine tua
ad habitaculum sanctum tuum.
14 Hearing of this, the peoples tremble; pangs seize on the people of Philistia;14 Attenderunt populi et commoti sunt,
dolores obtinuerunt habitatores Philisthaeae.
15 the chieftains of Edom are dismayed, Moab's princes -- panic has seized them, all the inhabitants ofCanaan have melted away.15 Tunc conturbati sunt principes Edom,
potentes Moab obtinuit tremor,
obriguerunt omnes habitatores Chanaan.
16 On them fall terror and dread; through the power of your arm they are stil as stone while your peopleare passing, Yahweh, while the people you have purchased are passing.16 Irruit super eos
formido et pavor;
in magnitudine brachii tui
fiunt immobiles quasi lapis,
donec pertranseat populus tuus, Domine,
donec pertranseat populus tuus iste,
quem possedisti.
17 You wil bring them in and plant them on the mountain which is your heritage, the place which you,Yahweh, have made your dwel ing, the sanctuary, Yahweh, prepared by your own hands.17 Introduces eos et plantabis
in monte hereditatis tuae,
firmissimo habitaculo tuo,
quod operatus es, Domine,
sanctuario, Domine,
quod firmaverunt manus tuae.
18 Yahweh will be king for ever and ever.18 Dominus regnabit
in aeternum et ultra! ”.
19 For when Pharaoh's cavalry, with his chariots and horsemen, had gone into the sea, Yahweh broughtthe waters of the sea back over them, though the Israelites went on dry ground right through the sea.19 Ingressi sunt enim equi pharaonis cum curribus et equitibus eius in mare, et reduxit super eos Dominus aquas maris; filii autem Israel ambu laverunt per siccum in medio eius.
20 The prophetess Miriam, Aaron's sister, took up a tambourine, and all the women fol owed her withtambourines, dancing,20 Sumpsit ergo Maria prophetissa soror Aaron tympanum in manu sua; egressaeque sunt omnes mulieres post eam cum tympanis et choris,
21 while Miriam took up from them the refrain: Sing to Yahweh, for he has covered himself in glory,horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.21 quibus praecinebat dicens:
“ Cantemus Domino,
gloriose enim magnificatus est:
equum et ascensorem eius
deiecit in mare! ”.
22 Moses led Israel away from the Sea of Reeds, and they entered the desert of Shur. They thentravel ed through the desert for three days without finding water.22 Tulit autem Moyses Israel de mari Rubro, et egressi sunt in desertum Sur; ambulaveruntque tribus diebus per solitudinem et non inveniebant aquam.
23 When they reached Marah, they could not drink the Marah water because it was bitter; this is why theplace was named Marah.23 Et venerunt in Mara nec poterant bibere aquas de Mara, eo quod essent amarae; unde vocatum est nomen eius Mara (id est Amaritudo).
24 The people complained to Moses saying, 'What are we to drink?'24 Et murmuravit populus contra Moysen dicens: “ Quid bibemus? ”.
25 Moses appealed to Yahweh for help, and Yahweh showed him a piece of wood. When Moses threwit into the water, the water became sweet. There he laid down a statute and law for them and there he put themto the test. Then he said,25 At ille clamavit ad Dominum, qui ostendit ei lignum; quod cum misisset in aquas, in dulcedinem versae sunt. Ibi constituit ei praecepta atque iudicia et ibi tentavit eum
26 'If you listen careful y to the voice of Yahweh your God and do what he regards as right, if you payattention to his commandments and keep al his laws, I shal never inflict on you any of the diseases that Iinflicted on the Egyptians, for I am Yahweh your Healer.'26 dicens: “ Si audieris vocem Domini Dei tui et, quod rectum est coram eo, feceris et oboedieris mandatis eius custodierisque omnia praecepta illius, cunctum languorem, quem posui in Aegypto, non inducam super te: Ego enim Dominus sanator tuus ”.
27 So they came to Elim where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees; and there theypitched camp beside the water.27 Venerunt autem in Elim, ubi erant duodecim fontes aquarum et septuaginta palmae; et castrametati sunt iuxta aquas.
