NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Go to Pharaoh, for I have made him and his officials stubborn, to displaythese signs of mine among them;1 Et dixit Dominus ad Moy sen: “ Ingredere ad pharao nem: ego enim induravi cor eius et servorum illius, ut faciam signa mea haec in medio eorum,
so that you can tel your sons and your grandsons how I made fools of the Egyptians and what signs Iperformed among them, so that you would know that I am Yahweh.'2 et narres in auribus filii tui et nepotum tuorum, quotiens contriverim Aegyptios et signa mea fecerim in eis; et sciatis quia ego Dominus ”.
Moses and Aaron then went to Pharaoh and said to him, 'Yahweh, God of the Hebrews, says this,"How much longer wil you refuse to submit to me? Let my people go and worship me.3 Introierunt ergo Moyses et Aaron ad pharaonem et dixerunt ei: “ Haec dicit Dominus, Deus Hebraeorum: Usquequo non vis subici mihi? Dimitte populum meum, ut sacrificet mihi.
Or, if you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I shall send locusts into your country.4 Sin autem resistis et non vis dimittere eum, ecce ego inducam cras locustam in fines tuos,
They wil cover the surface of the soil so that the soil cannot be seen. They wil devour the remainderof what has escaped, of what you have been left after the hail; they wil devour al your trees growing in thefields;5 quae operiat superficiem terrae, ne quidquam eius appareat, sed comedatur, quod residuum fuerit grandini; corrodet enim omnia ligna, quae germinant in agris.
they will fil your houses, al your officials' houses and al the Egyptians' houses -- something yourancestors and your ancestors' ancestors have never seen from the day they first appeared on earth until now." 'Then he turned on his heel and left Pharaoh's presence.6 Et implebunt domos tuas et servorum tuorum et omnium Aegyptiorum, quantam non viderunt patres tui et avi, ex quo orti sunt super terram usque in praesentem diem ”. Avertitque se et egressus est a pharaone.
At which, Pharaoh's officials said to him, 'How much longer are we to be tricked by this fellow? Let thepeople go and worship Yahweh their God. Do you not final y realise that Egypt is on the brink of ruin?'7 Dixerunt autem servi pharaonis ad eum: “ Usquequo patiemur hoc scandalum? Dimitte homines, ut sacrificent Domino Deo suo; nonne vides quod perierit Aegyptus? ”.
So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh who said to them, 'Go and worship Yahweh yourGod. But who are to go?'8 Revocaveruntque Moysen et Aaron ad pharaonem, qui dixit eis: “ Ite, sacrificate Domino Deo vestro. Quinam sunt qui ituri sunt? ”.
Moses replied, 'We shal take our young men and our old men, we shall take our sons and daughters, our flocks and our herds, since we are going to hold a feast in Yahweh's honour.'9 Ait Moyses: “ Cum parvulis nostris et senioribus pergemus, cum filiis et filiabus, cum ovibus et armentis; est enim sollemnitas Domini nobis ”.
Pharaoh said, 'So I must let you go with your wives and children! May Yahweh preserve you! Plainly, you are up to no good!10 Et respondit eis: “ Sic Dominus sit vobiscum, quomodo ego dimittam vos et parvulos vestros. Cui dubium est quod pessime cogitetis?
Oh no! You men may go and worship Yahweh, since that was your original request.' With that, theywere driven from Pharaoh's presence.11 Non fiet ita, sed ite tantum viri et sacrificate Domino; hoc enim et ipsi petistis ”. Statimque eiecti sunt de conspectu pharaonis.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over Egypt for the locusts. Let them invade Egyptand devour whatever is growing in the country, whatever the hail has left!'12 Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: “ Extende manum tuam super terram Aegypti, ut veniat locusta et ascendat super eam et devoret omnem herbam, quidquid residuum fuerit grandini ”.
Moses stretched his staff over Egypt, and over the country Yahweh sent an east wind which blew althat day and night. By morning, the east wind had brought the locusts.13 Et extendit Moyses virgam super terram Aegypti, et Dominus induxit ventum urentem tota die illa et nocte. Et mane facto, ventus urens levavit locustas;
The locusts invaded the whole of Egypt and settled al over Egypt, in great swarms; never had therebeen so many locusts before, nor would there be again.14 quae ascenderunt super universam terram Aegypti et sederunt in cunctis finibus Aegyptiorum innumerabiles, quales ante illud tempus non fuerant nec postea futurae sunt.
They covered the surface of the ground till the land was devastated. They devoured whatever wasgrowing in the fields and al the fruit on the trees that the hail had left. No green was left on tree or plant in thefields anywhere in Egypt.15 Operueruntque universam superficiem terrae, et obscurata est terra. Devoraverunt igitur omnem herbam terrae et, quidquid pomorum in arboribus fuit, quae grando dimiserat; nihilque omnino virens relictum est in lignis et in herbis terrae in cuncta Aegypto.
Pharaoh sent urgently for Moses and Aaron and said, 'I have sinned against Yahweh your God andagainst you.16 Quam ob rem festinus pharao vocavit Moysen et Aaron et dixit eis: “ Peccavi in Dominum Deum vestrum et in vos.
Now forgive my sin, I implore you, just this once, and entreat Yahweh your God to turn this deadlything away from me.'17 Sed nunc dimittite peccatum mihi tantum hac vice et rogate Dominum Deum vestrum, ut auferat a me saltem mortem istam ”.
When Moses left Pharaoh's presence he prayed to Yahweh,18 Egressusque Moyses de conspectu pharaonis oravit Dominum,
and Yahweh changed the wind into a west wind, very strong, which carried the locusts away andswept them into the Sea of Reeds. There was not one locust left in the whole of Egypt.19 qui flare fecit ventum ab occidente vehementissimum et arreptam locustam proiecit in mare Rubrum; non remansit ne una quidem in cunctis finibus Aegypti.
But Yahweh made Pharaoh stubborn, and he did not let the Israelites go.20 Et induravit Dominus cor pharaonis, nec dimisit filios Israel.
Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand towards heaven, and let darkness, darkness sothick that it can be felt, cover Egypt.'21 Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen: “ Extende manum tuam in caelum, et sint tenebrae super terram Aegypti tam densae ut palpari queant ”.
So Moses stretched out his hand towards heaven, and for three days there was thick darkness overthe whole of Egypt.22 Extenditque Moyses manum in caelum, et factae sunt tenebrae horribiles in universa terra Aegypti tribus diebus.
No one could see anyone else or move about for three days, but al the Israelites did have lightwhere they were living.23 Nemo vidit fratrem suum nec movit se de loco, in quo erat. Ubicumque autem habitabant filii Israel, lux erat.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, 'Go and worship Yahweh, but your flocks and herds are to stayhere. Your wives and children can go with you too.'24 Vocavitque pharao Moysen et Aaron et dixit eis: “ Ite, sacrificate Domino; oves tantum vestrae et armenta remaneant, parvuli vestri eant vobiscum ”.
Moses said, 'But now you must give us sacrifices and burnt offerings to offer to Yahweh our God.25 Ait Moyses: “ Etiamsi tu hostias et holocausta dares nobis, quae offeramus Domino Deo nostro,
And our livestock will go with us too; not a hoof wil be left behind; for we may need animals fromthese to worship Yahweh our God; for until we get there we ourselves cannot tell how we are to worshipYahweh.'26 tamen et greges nostri pergent nobiscum; non remanebit ex eis ungula, quoniam ex ipsis sumemus, quae necessaria sunt in cultum Domini Dei nostri; praesertim cum ignoremus quid debeat immolari, donec ad ipsum locum perveniamus ”.
But Yahweh made Pharaoh stubborn, and he refused to let them go.27 Induravit autem Dominus cor pharaonis, et noluit dimittere eos.
Pharaoh said to Moses, 'Out of my sight! Be sure you never see my face again, for the next time yousee my face you die!'28 Dixitque pharao ad eum: “ Recede a me. Cave, ne ultra videas faciem meam; quocumque die apparueris mihi, morieris ”.
Moses then said, 'You yourself have said it. I shal never see your face again.'29 Respondit Moyses: “ Ita fiet, ut locutus es; non videbo ultra faciem tuam ”.
