New Jerusalem Bible Le Sainte Bible Vigouroux
Judith was informed at the time of what had happened. She was the daughter of Merari son of Ox, sonof Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphaim, son of Ahitub, son ofElijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Israel.1 Or ces paroles d'Ozias furent rapportées à Judith, veuve, qui était fille de Mérari, fils d'Idox, fils de Joseph, fils d'Ozias, fils d'Elaï, fils de Jamnor, fils de Gédéon, fils de Raphaïm, fils d'Achitob, fils de Melchia, fils d'Enan, fils de Nathania, fils de Salathiel, fils de Siméon, fils de Ruben.
Her husband Manasseh, of her own tribe and family, had died at the time of the barley harvest.2 Alors Tobie, se souvenant des paroles de l'ange, tira de son sac une partie du foie du poisson, et la mit sur des charbons ardents.
He was supervising the men as they bound up the sheaves in the field when he caught sunstroke andhad to take to his bed. He died in Bethulia, his home town, and was buried with his ancestors in the field that liesbetween Dothan and Balamon.3 Alors l'ange Raphaël saisit le démon, et le lia dans le désert de la haute Egypte.
As a widow, Judith stayed inside her home for three years and four months.4 Et Tobie exhorta la jeune fille (vierge) et lui dit : Sara, lève-toi et prions Dieu aujourd'hui, et demain, et après-demain, car durant ces trois nuits nous nous unirons à Dieu ; et après la troisième nuit, nous vivrons dans notre mariage.
She had had an upper room built for herself on the roof. She wore sackcloth next to the skin anddressed in widow's weeds.5 Et elle s'était fait au haut de sa maison une chambre secrète, où elle demeurait enfermée avec ses servantes.
She fasted every day of her widowhood except for the Sabbath eve, the Sabbath itself, the eve of NewMoon, the feast of New Moon and the joyful festivals of the House of Israel.6 S'étant donc levés tous deux, ils prièrent Dieu ensemble avec instance, afin qu'il les conservât sains et saufs.
Now she was very beautiful, charming to see. Her husband Manasseh had left her gold and silver, menservants and maidservants, herds and land; and she lived among al her possessions7 Elle était d'un élégant aspect, et son mari lui avait laissé de grandes richesses, un grand nombre de serviteurs, et des héritages où elle avait de nombreux troupeaux de boeufs et de moutons.
without anyone finding a word to say against her, so devoutly did she fear God.8 Elle était très estimée de tous, parce qu'elle avait une grande crainte du Seigneur; et il n'y avait personne qui dît une seule parole à son désavantage.
Hearing how the water shortage had demoralised the people and how they had complained bitterly tothe headman of the town, and being also told what Uzziah had said to them and how he had given them his oathto surrender the town to the Assyrians in five days' time,9 Ayant donc appris qu'Ozias avait promis de livrer la ville dans cinq jours, elle envoya chercher Chabri et Charmi, anciens du peuple.
Judith immediately sent the serving-woman who ran her household to summon Chabris and Charmis, two elders of the town.10 Ils vinrent auprès d'elle, et elle leur dit : Comment donc Ozias a-t-il consenti de livrer la ville aux Assyriens, s'il ne vous venait du secours dans cinq jours?
When these came in she said: 'Listen to me, leaders of the people of Bethulia. You were wrong tospeak to the people as you did today and to bind yourself by oath, in defiance of God, to surrender the town toour enemies if the Lord did not come to your help within a set number of days.11 Et qui êtes-vous, vous qui tentez le Seigneur?
Who are you, to put God to the test today, you, of al people, to set yourselves above him?12 Car il disait : Il lui sera peut-être arrivé la même chose qu'à ces sept hommes qui sont entrés auprès d'elle.
You put the Lord Almighty to the test! You do not understand anything, and never wil .13 Vous avez prescrit un terme à la miséricorde du Seigneur selon qu'il vous a plû, et vous Lui avez marqué un jour.
If you cannot sound the depths of the human heart or unravel the arguments of the human mind, howcan you fathom the God who made all things, or sound his mind or unravel his purposes? No, brothers, do notprovoke the anger of the Lord our God.14 Mais, parce que le Seigneur est patient, faisons pénitence de cette faute, et implorons Son pardon avec beaucoup de larmes.
Although it may not be his wil to help us within the next five days, he has the power to protect us for asmany days as he pleases, just as he has the power to destroy us before our enemies.15 Car Dieu ne menace point comme un homme, et Il ne S'enflamme pas de colère comme les fils des hommes.
But you have no right to demand guarantees where the designs of the Lord our God are concerned. For God is not to be threatened as a human being is, nor is he, like a mere human, to be cajoled.16 C'est pourquoi humilions nos âmes devant Lui, et servons-Le en demeurant dans un esprit d'abaissement,
Rather, as we wait patiently for him to save, let us plead with him to help us. He wil hear our voice ifsuch is his good pleasure.17 et prions le Seigneur avec larmes de nous faire sentir Sa miséricorde en la manière qu'il Lui plaira, afin que, comme l'orgueil de nos ennemis a troublé notre coeur, ainsi notre humilité devienne pour nous un sujet de gloire.
'And indeed of recent times and stil today there is not one tribe of ours, or family, or vil age, or townthat has worshipped gods made by human hand, as once was done,18 Car nous n'avons point suivi les péchés de nos pères, qui ont abandonné leur Dieu, et qui ont adorê des dieux êtrangers,
which was the reason why our ancestors were delivered over to sword and sack, and perished inmisery at the hands of our enemies.19 A cause de ce crime ils ont été abandonnés à leurs ennemis, au glaive, au pillage et à la confusion. Mais, pour nous, nous ne connaissons pas d'autre Dieu que Lui.
We for our part acknowledge no other God but him; and so we may hope he wil not look on usdisdainfully or desert our nation.20 Attendons humblement Ses consolations, et Il sauvera notre vie des afflictions que nos ennemis nous font souffrir; Il humiliera toutes les nations qui s'élèvent contre nous, et Il les couvrira de honte, Lui, le Seigneur notre Dieu.
'If indeed they capture us, as you expect, then al Judaea wil be captured too, and our holy placesplundered, and we shal answer with our blood for their profanation.21 Et maintenant, mes frères, puisque vous êtes les anciens du peuple de Dieu, et que leur vie dépend de vous, relevez leur coeur par vos paroles, afin qu'ils se souviennent que nos pères ont été tentés, pour éprouver s'ils servaient véritablement leur Dieu.
The slaughter of our brothers, the captivity of our country, the unpeopling of our heritage, will recoil onour own heads among the nations whose slaves we shal become, and our new masters wil look down on us asan outrage and a disgrace;22 Et il fit (aussi) tuer deux vaches grasses et quatre moutons (béliers), pour préparer un festin à tous ses voisins et à tous ses amis.
for our surrender wil not reinstate us in their favour; no, the Lord our God will make it a thing to beashamed of.23 Raguël conjura ensuite Tobie de demeurer avec lui pendant deux semaines.
So now, brothers, let us set an example to our brothers, since their lives depend on us, and thesanctuary -- Temple and altar -- rests on us.24 Quant à ceux qui n'ont pas reçu ces épreuves dans la crainte du Seigneur, qui ont témoigné leur impatience, leurs reproches et leurs murmures contre le Seigneur,
'Al this being so, let us rather give thanks to the Lord our God who, as he tested our ancestors, is nowtesting us.25 ils ont été exterminés par l'Ange exterminateur, et ils ont péri par les serpents.
Remember how he treated Abraham, all the ordeals of Isaac, al that happened to Jacob in SyrianMesopotamia while he kept the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother.26 Ne témoignons donc pas d'impatience dans ces maux que nous souffrons;
For as these ordeals were intended by him to search their hearts, so now this is not vengeance thatGod is exacting on us, but a warning inflicted by the Lord on those who are near his heart.'27 mais, considérant que ces peines sont moindres que nos péchés, croyons que ces fléaux, dont Dieu nous châtie comme Ses serviteurs, nous sont envoyés pour nous corriger, et non pour nous perdre.
Uzziah replied, 'Everything you have just said comes from an honest heart and no one will contradict aword of it.28 Alors Ozias et les anciens lui répondirent : Tout ce que vous avez dit est vrai, et il n'y a rien à reprendre dans vos paroles.
Not that today is the first time your wisdom has been displayed; from your earliest years all the peoplehave known how shrewd you are and of how sound a heart.29 Maintenant donc priez pour nous, parce que vous êtes une femme sainte et craignant Dieu.
But, parched with thirst, the people forced us to act as we had promised them and to bind ourselves byan inviolable oath.30 Et Judith leur dit : Comme vous reconnaissez que ce que j'ai pu vous dire est de Dieu,
You are a devout woman; pray to the Lord, then, to send us a downpour to fil our storage-wel s, so thatour faintness may pass.'31 éprouvez aussi si ce que j'ai résolu de faire vient de Lui, et priez-Le, afin qu'Il affermisse mon dessein.
Judith replied, 'Listen to me, I intend to do something, the memory of which wil be handed down to thechildren of our race from age to age.32 Vous vous tiendrez cette nuit à la porte de la ville, et je sortirai avec ma servante; et priez pour que le Seigneur, comme vous l'avez dit, regarde Son peuple d'Israël dans ces cinq jours.
Tonight you must be at the gate of the town. I shal make my way out with my attendant. Before thetime fixed by you for surrendering the town to our enemies, the Lord wil make use of me to rescue Israel.33 Mais je ne veux point que vous scrutiez mon dessein; et jusqu'à ce que je vous apporte des nouvelles, qu'on ne fasse autre chose que de prier pour moi le Seigneur notre Dieu.
You must not ask what I intend to do; I shall not tel you until I have done it.'34 Et Ozias, prince de Juda, lui dit : Allez en paix, et que le Seigneur soit avec vous pour Se venger de nos ennemis. Et l'ayant quittée, ils s'en allèrent.
Uzziah and the chief men said, 'Go in peace. May the Lord show you a way to take revenge on ourenemies.'
And leaving the upper room they went back to their posts.
