NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Judith was informed at the time of what had happened. She was the daughter of Merari son of Ox, sonof Joseph, son of Oziel, son of Elkiah, son of Ananias, son of Gideon, son of Raphaim, son of Ahitub, son ofElijah, son of Hilkiah, son of Eliab, son of Nathanael, son of Salamiel, son of Sarasadai, son of Israel.	1 En aquellos días llegó todo esto a oídos de Judit, hija de Merarí, hijo de Ox, hijo de José, hijo de Oziel, hijo de Helcías, hijo de Ananías, hijo de Gedeón, hijo de Rafaín, hijo de Ajitob, hijo de Elías, hijo de Jilquías, hijo de Eliab, hijo de Natanael, hijo de Salamiel, hijo de Sarasadai, hijo de Israel.
2 Her husband Manasseh, of her own tribe and family, had died at the time of the barley harvest.	2 Su esposo Manasés, que era de su misma tribu y de su misma familia, había muerto durante la cosecha de la cebada:
3 He was supervising the men as they bound up the sheaves in the field when he caught sunstroke andhad to take to his bed. He died in Bethulia, his home town, and was buried with his ancestors in the field that liesbetween Dothan and Balamon.	3 mientras vigilaba a los que ataban las gavillas en el campo, tuvo una insolación que lo postró en cama, y murió en Betulia, su ciudad. Allí fue sepultado con sus padres, en el campo que está situado entre Dotaim y Belamón.
4 As a widow, Judith stayed inside her home for three years and four months.	4 Judit había permanecido viuda en su casa durante tres años y cuatro meses.
5 She had had an upper room built for herself on the roof. She wore sackcloth next to the skin anddressed in widow's weeds.	5 Sobre la terraza de su casa se había hecho levantar una carpa; llevaba un sayal sobre su cuerpo y vestía ropas de luto.
6 She fasted every day of her widowhood except for the Sabbath eve, the Sabbath itself, the eve of NewMoon, the feast of New Moon and the joyful festivals of the House of Israel.	6 Ayunaba todos los días, excepto los sábados, los novilunios y los días de fiesta y de regocijo del pueblo de Israel.
7 Now she was very beautiful, charming to see. Her husband Manasseh had left her gold and silver,menservants and maidservants, herds and land; and she lived among al her possessions	7 Era muy hermosa y de aspecto sumamente agradable. Su esposo Manasés le había dejado oro y plata, servidores y servidoras, ganados y campos, y ella había quedado como dueña de todo.
8 without anyone finding a word to say against her, so devoutly did she fear God.	8 Nadie podía reprocharle nada, porque era muy temerosa de Dios.
9 Hearing how the water shortage had demoralised the people and how they had complained bitterly tothe headman of the town, and being also told what Uzziah had said to them and how he had given them his oathto surrender the town to the Assyrians in five days' time,	9 Judit se enteró de las amargas quejas que el pueblo, descorazonado por la falta de agua, había dirigido al jefe de la ciudad. También se enteró de la respuesta que les había dado Ozías, cuando juró entregar la ciudad a los asirios en el término de cinco días.
10 Judith immediately sent the serving-woman who ran her household to summon Chabris and Charmis,two elders of the town.	10 Envió entonces a la servidora que estaba al frente de todos sus bienes, para que llamara a Cabris y Carmis, ancianos de la ciudad.
11 When these came in she said: 'Listen to me, leaders of the people of Bethulia. You were wrong tospeak to the people as you did today and to bind yourself by oath, in defiance of God, to surrender the town toour enemies if the Lord did not come to your help within a set number of days.	11 Estos se presentaron, y ella les dijo: «Escúchenme, por favor, jefes de la población de Betulia. Ustedes se equivocaron hoy ante el pueblo, al jurar solemnemente que entregarían la ciudad a nuestros enemigos, si el Señor no viene a ayudarnos en el término fijado.
12 Who are you, to put God to the test today, you, of al people, to set yourselves above him?	12 Al fin de cuentas, ¿quiénes son ustedes, para tentar así a Dios y usurpar su lugar entre los hombres?
13 You put the Lord Almighty to the test! You do not understand anything, and never wil .	13 ¡Ahora ustedes ponen a prueba al Señor todopoderoso, pero esto significa que nunca entenderán nada!
14 If you cannot sound the depths of the human heart or unravel the arguments of the human mind, howcan you fathom the God who made all things, or sound his mind or unravel his purposes? No, brothers, do notprovoke the anger of the Lord our God.	14 Si ustedes son incapaces de escrutar las profundidades del corazón del hombre y de penetrar los razonamientos de su mente, ¿cómo pretenden sondear a Dios, que ha hecho todas estas cosas, y conocer su pensamiento o comprender sus designios? No, hermanos; cuídense de provocar la ira del Señor, nuestro Dios.
15 Although it may not be his wil to help us within the next five days, he has the power to protect us for asmany days as he pleases, just as he has the power to destroy us before our enemies.	15 Porque si él no quiere venir a ayudarnos en el término de cinco días, tiene poder para protegernos cuando él quiera o para destruirnos ante nuestros enemigos.
16 But you have no right to demand guarantees where the designs of the Lord our God are concerned.For God is not to be threatened as a human being is, nor is he, like a mere human, to be cajoled.	16 No exijan entonces garantías a los designios del Señor, nuestro Dios, porque Dios no cede a las amenazas como un hombre ni se le impone nada como a un mortal.
17 Rather, as we wait patiently for him to save, let us plead with him to help us. He wil hear our voice ifsuch is his good pleasure.	17 Por lo tanto, invoquemos su ayuda, esperando pacientemente su salvación, y él nos escuchará si esa es su voluntad.
18 'And indeed of recent times and stil today there is not one tribe of ours, or family, or vil age, or townthat has worshipped gods made by human hand, as once was done,	18 Porque no hay nadie en nuestro tiempo, ni hay entre nosotros, en el día de hoy, tribu, ni familia, ni comarca, ni ciudad que adore dioses fabricados por mano de hombre, como sucedía en los tiempos pasados.
19 which was the reason why our ancestors were delivered over to sword and sack, and perished inmisery at the hands of our enemies.	19 A causa de eso, nuestros padres fueron entregados a la espada y a la depredación, y sucumbieron miserablemente delante de nuestros enemigos.
20 We for our part acknowledge no other God but him; and so we may hope he wil not look on usdisdainfully or desert our nation.	20 Nosotros, en cambio, no reconocemos otro Dios fuera de él; por eso esperamos que no nos despreciará, ni a nosotros ni a ninguno de nuestra raza.
21 'If indeed they capture us, as you expect, then al Judaea wil be captured too, and our holy placesplundered, and we shal answer with our blood for their profanation.	21 Si nosotros nos rendimos, caerá toda la Judea y nuestro Santuario será saqueado. Entonces tendremos que responder con nuestra propia sangre por esa profanación.
22 The slaughter of our brothers, the captivity of our country, the unpeopling of our heritage, will recoil onour own heads among the nations whose slaves we shal become, and our new masters wil look down on us asan outrage and a disgrace;	22 Además, el Señor hará rezar sobre nuestra cabeza, en medio de las naciones donde estaremos cautivos, la matanza de nuestros hermanos, la deportación de la gente del país y la devastación de nuestra herencia; y seremos objeto de burla y escarnio por parte de nuestros conquistadores.
23 for our surrender wil not reinstate us in their favour; no, the Lord our God will make it a thing to beashamed of.	23 Porque nuestra esclavitud no nos hará ganar la benevolencia de los vencedores, sino que el Señor, nuestro Dios, la convertirá en deshonra.
24 So now, brothers, let us set an example to our brothers, since their lives depend on us, and thesanctuary -- Temple and altar -- rests on us.	24 Por eso, hermanos, demos un buen ejemplo a nuestros hermanos, ya que su vida depende de nosotros, y lo más sagrado que tenemos, el Templo y el altar, también dependen de nosotros.
25 'Al this being so, let us rather give thanks to the Lord our God who, as he tested our ancestors, is nowtesting us.	25 Más aún, demos gracias al Señor, nuestro Dios, que nos somete a prueba, lo mismo que a nuestros padres.
26 Remember how he treated Abraham, all the ordeals of Isaac, al that happened to Jacob in SyrianMesopotamia while he kept the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother.	26 Recuerden todo lo que hizo con Abraham y en qué forma probó a Isaac, y todo lo que le sucedió a Jacob en Mesopotamia de Siria, cuando apacentaba las ovejas de Labán, hermano de su madre:
27 For as these ordeals were intended by him to search their hearts, so now this is not vengeance thatGod is exacting on us, but a warning inflicted by the Lord on those who are near his heart.'	27 así como a ellos los purificó para probar sus corazones, de la misma manera, nosotros no somos castigados por él, sino que el Señor golpea a los que están cerca de él, para que eso les sirva de advertencia».
28 Uzziah replied, 'Everything you have just said comes from an honest heart and no one will contradict aword of it.	28 Ozías le respondió: «En todo lo que has dicho te has expresado con sensatez y nadie puede contradecir tus palabras.
29 Not that today is the first time your wisdom has been displayed; from your earliest years all the peoplehave known how shrewd you are and of how sound a heart.	29 No es esta la primera vez que se manifiesta tu sabiduría: desde que eras joven, todo el pueblo conoce tu inteligencia y la bondad de tu corazón.
30 But, parched with thirst, the people forced us to act as we had promised them and to bind ourselves byan inviolable oath.	30 Pero ahora el pueblo está consumido por la sed y nos ha obligado a ejecutar lo que le hemos propuesto y a comprometernos con un juramento que no nos es lícito violar.
31 You are a devout woman; pray to the Lord, then, to send us a downpour to fil our storage-wel s, so thatour faintness may pass.'	31 Tú, que eres una mujer piadosa, ruega por nosotros para que el Señor envíe la lluvia que llenará nuestras cisternas, y así no quedaremos exhaustos».
32 Judith replied, 'Listen to me, I intend to do something, the memory of which wil be handed down to thechildren of our race from age to age.	32 Judit les respondió: «Escúchenme, porque voy a hacer algo que se transmitirá de generación en generación a los hijos de nuestra estirpe.
33 Tonight you must be at the gate of the town. I shal make my way out with my attendant. Before thetime fixed by you for surrendering the town to our enemies, the Lord wil make use of me to rescue Israel.	33 Esta noche, ustedes se ubicarán ante la Puerta de la ciudad. Yo saldré con mi servidora, y antes del plazo fijado para entregar la ciudad a nuestros enemigos, el Señor, por mi intermedio, visitará a Israel.
34 You must not ask what I intend to do; I shall not tel you until I have done it.'	34 No traten de averiguar lo que voy a hacer, porque no les diré nada hasta haber ejecutado mi proyecto.»
35 Uzziah and the chief men said, 'Go in peace. May the Lord show you a way to take revenge on ourenemies.'	35 Ozías y los jefes le dijeron: «Vete en paz, y que el Señor Dios vaya delante de ti para escarmiento de nuestros enemigos».
36 And leaving the upper room they went back to their posts.	36 Luego salieron de la carpa y regresaron a sus puestos.
