NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 In the eighteenth year, on the twenty-second day of the first month, a rumour ran through the palace thatNebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians was to have his revenge on al the countries, as he had threatened.	1 La dix-huitième année, le vingt-deuxième jour du premier mois, le bruit courut au palais queNabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, allait tirer vengeance de toute la terre, comme il l'avait dit.
2 Summoning his general staff and senior officers, he held a secret conference with them, and with hisown lips pronounced utter destruction on the entire area.	2 Tous ses aides de camp et notables convoqués, il tint avec eux un conseil secret, et décida de sapropre bouche la destruction totale de toute la contrée.
3 It was then decreed that everyone should be put to death who had not answered the king's appeal.	3 Alors on décréta de faire périr quiconque n'avait pas répondu à l'appel du roi.
4 When the council was over, Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians sent for Holofernes, general-in-chiefof his armies and subordinate only to himself. He said to him,	4 Le conseil terminé, Nabuchodonosor, roi des Assyriens, fit appeler Holopherne, général en chef deses armées et son second. Il lui dit:
5 'Thus speaks the Great King, lord of the whole world, "Go; take men of proven valour, about a hundredand twenty thousand foot soldiers and a strong company of horse with twelve thousand cavalrymen;	5 "Ainsi parle le grand roi, maître de toute la terre: Pars, prends avec toi des gens d'une valeuréprouvée, à peu près 20.000 fantassins et un fort contingent de chevaux avec 12.000 cavaliers,
6 then advance against all the western lands, since these people have disregarded my cal .	6 puis marche contre toute la région occidentale, puisque ces gens ont résisté à mon appel.
7 Bid them have earth and water ready, because in my rage I am about to march on them; the feet of mysoldiers wil cover the whole face of the earth, and I shal plunder it.	7 Mande-leur de préparer la terre et l'eau, car, dans ma fureur, je vais marcher contre eux. Des pieds demes soldats je couvrirai toute la surface du pays et je le livrerai au pillage.
8 Their wounded will fil the val eys and the torrents, and rivers, blocked with their dead, wil overflow.	8 Leurs blessés rempliront les ravins et, comblés de leurs cadavres, torrents et fleuves déborderont.
9 I shall lead them captive to the ends of the earth.	9 Je les emmènerai en captivité jusqu'au bout du monde.
10 Now go! Begin by conquering this whole region for me. If they surrender to you, hold them for me untilthe time comes to punish them.	10 Va donc! Commence par me conquérir toute cette région. S'ils se livrent à toi, tu me les réserveraspour le jour de leur châtiment.
11 But if they resist, look on no one with clemency, hand them over to slaughter and plunder throughoutthe territory entrusted to you.	11 Quant aux insoumis, que ton oeil n'en épargne aucun. Voue-les à la tuerie et au pillage dans tout leterritoire qui t'est confié.
12 For by my life and by the living power of my kingdom I have spoken. Al this I shal do by my power.	12 Car je suis vivant, moi, et vivante est la puissance de ma royauté! J'ai dit. Tout cela, je l'accompliraide ma main!
13 And you, neglect none of your master's commands, act strictly according to my orders without furtherdelay." '	13 Et toi, ne néglige rien des ordres de ton maître, mais agis strictement selon ce que je t'ai prescrit,sans plus tarder!"
14 Leaving the presence of his sovereign, Holofernes immediately summoned al the marshals, generalsand officers of the Assyrian army	14 Sorti de chez son souverain, Holopherne convoqua tous les princes, les généraux, les officiers del'armée d'Assur,
15 and detailed the picked troops as his master had ordered, about a hundred and twenty thousand menand a further twelve thousand mounted archers.	15 puis dénombra des guerriers d'élite, conformément aux ordres de son maître: environ 120.000hommes plus 12.000 archers montés.
16 He organised these in the normal battle formation.	16 Il les disposa en formation normale de combat.
17 He then secured vast numbers of camels, donkeys and mules to carry the baggage, and innumerablesheep, oxen and goats for food supplies.	17 Il prit ensuite des chameaux, des ânes, des mulets en immense quantité pour porter les bagages, desbrebis, des boeufs, des chèvres sans nombre pour le ravitaillement.
18 Every man received ful rations and a generous sum of gold and silver from the king's purse.	18 Chaque homme reçut d'amples provisions ainsi que beaucoup d'or et d'argent comptés par la maisondu roi.
19 He then set out for the campaign with his whole army, in advance of King Nebuchadnezzar, tooverwhelm the whole western region with his chariots, his horsemen and his picked body of foot.	19 Puis, avec toute son armée, il partit en expédition devant le roi Nabuchodonosor afin de submergertoute la contrée occidentale de ses chars, de ses cavaliers, de ses fantassins d'élite.
20 A motley gathering fol owed in his rear, as numerous as locusts or the grains of sand on the ground;there was no counting their multitude.	20 Une foule composite marchait à sa suite, aussi nombreuse que les sauterelles, que les grains de sablede la terre. Aucun chiffre n'en pourrait évaluer la multitude.
21 Thus they set out from Nineveh and marched for three days towards the Plain of Bectileth. FromBectileth they went on to pitch camp near the mountains that lie to the north of Upper Cilicia.	21 Ils quittèrent donc Ninive et marchèrent trois jours durant dans la direction de la plaine de Bektileth.De Bektileth ils s'en vinrent camper près des montagnes situées à gauche de la Haute-Cilicie.
22 From there Holofernes advanced into the highlands with his whole army, infantry, horsemen, chariots.	22 De là, avec toute son armée, fantassins, cavaliers et chars, Holopherne s'engagea dans la régionmontagneuse.
23 He cut his way through Put and Lud, carried away captive al the sons of Rassis and sons of Ishmaelliving on the verge of the desert south of Cheleon,	23 Il pourfendit Put et Lud, rançonna tous les fils de Rassis et ceux d'Ismaël cantonnés à l'orée dudésert au sud de Chéléôn,
24 marched along the Euphrates, crossed Mesopotamia, rased al the fortified towns controlling the WadiAbron and reached the sea.	24 longea l'Euphrate, traversa la Mésopotamie, détruisit de fond en comble toutes les villes fortifiéesqui dominent le torrent d'Abrona et parvint jusqu'à la mer.
25 Next he attacked the territories of Cilicia, butchering al who offered him resistance, advanced on thesouthern frontiers of Japheth, facing Arabia,	25 Puis il s'empara des territoires de la Cilicie, taillant en pièces quiconque lui résistait, arriva jusqu'auxlimites méridionales de Japhet, en face de l'Arabie,
26 completely encircled the Midianites, burned their tents and plundered their sheep-folds,	26 encercla tous les Madianites, brûla leurs campements et pilla leurs bergeries,
27 made his way down to the Damascus plain at the time of the wheat harvest, set fire to the fields,destroyed the flocks and herds, sacked the towns, laid the countryside waste and put al the young men to thesword.	27 descendit ensuite dans la plaine de Damas à l'époque de la moisson des blés, mit le feu aux champs,fit disparaître menu et gros bétail, pilla les villes, dévasta les campagnes et passa au fil de l'épée tous les jeunesgens.
28 Fear and trembling seized al the coastal peoples; those of Sidon and Tyre, those of Sur, Ocina andJamnia. The populations of Azotos and Ascalon were panic-stricken.	28 Crainte et tremblement s'emparèrent de tous les habitants de la côte: ceux de Sidon et de Tyr, ceuxde Sour, d'Okina et de Jamnia. La terreur régnait parmi les populations d'Azot et d'Ascalon.
