NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 In the eighteenth year, on the twenty-second day of the first month, a rumour ran through the palace thatNebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians was to have his revenge on al the countries, as he had threatened.	1 El año dieciocho, el día veintidós del primer mes, se celebró consejo en el palacio de Nabucodonosor, rey de Asiria, en orden a la venganza que había de tomarse a toda aquella tierra, tal como lo había anunciado.
2 Summoning his general staff and senior officers, he held a secret conference with them, and with hisown lips pronounced utter destruction on the entire area.	2 Convocó a todos sus ministros y a todos sus magnates y expuso ante ellos su secreto designio, decidiendo con su propia boca la total desgracia de aquella tierra.
3 It was then decreed that everyone should be put to death who had not answered the king's appeal.	3 Y ellos sentenciaron que debía ser destruida toda carne que no había escuchado las palabras de su boca.
4 When the council was over, Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians sent for Holofernes, general-in-chiefof his armies and subordinate only to himself. He said to him,	4 Acabado el consejo, Nabucodonosor, rey de Asiria, llamó a Holofernes, jefe supremo del ejército y segundo suyo, y le dijo:
5 'Thus speaks the Great King, lord of the whole world, "Go; take men of proven valour, about a hundredand twenty thousand foot soldiers and a strong company of horse with twelve thousand cavalrymen;	5 «Así dice el gran rey, señor de toda la tierra: Parte de junto a mí. Toma contigo hombres de valor probado, unos 120.000 infantes y una gran cantidad de caballos, con 12.000 jinetes;
6 then advance against all the western lands, since these people have disregarded my cal .	6 marcha contra toda la tierra de occidente, pues no escucharon las palabras de mi boca.
7 Bid them have earth and water ready, because in my rage I am about to march on them; the feet of mysoldiers wil cover the whole face of the earth, and I shal plunder it.	7 Ordénales que pongan a tu disposición tierra y agua, porque partiré airado contra ellos y cubriré toda la superficie de la tierra con los pies de mis soldados, a los que entregaré el país como botín.
8 Their wounded will fil the val eys and the torrents, and rivers, blocked with their dead, wil overflow.	8 Sus heridos llenarán sus barrancos; sus ríos y torrentes, repletos todos de cadáveres, se desbordarán;
9 I shall lead them captive to the ends of the earth.	9 y los deportaré hasta los confines de la tierra.
10 Now go! Begin by conquering this whole region for me. If they surrender to you, hold them for me untilthe time comes to punish them.	10 Parte, pues, y comienza por apoderarte de su territorio. Si se rinden a ti, resérvamelos para el día de su vergüenza.
11 But if they resist, look on no one with clemency, hand them over to slaughter and plunder throughoutthe territory entrusted to you.	11 Pero que no perdone tu ojo a los rebeldes. Entrégalos a la muerte y al saqueo en todo el país conquistado.
12 For by my life and by the living power of my kingdom I have spoken. Al this I shal do by my power.	12 Porque, por mi vida y por el poderío de mi reino, como lo he dicho, lo cumpliré por mi propia mano.
13 And you, neglect none of your master's commands, act strictly according to my orders without furtherdelay." '	13 Por tu parte, no traspases ni una sola de las órdenes de tu señor; las cumplirás estrictamente, sin tardanza, tal como te lo he mandado».
14 Leaving the presence of his sovereign, Holofernes immediately summoned al the marshals, generalsand officers of the Assyrian army	14 En saliendo Holofernes de la presencia de su señor, convocó a todos los príncipes, jefes y capitanes del ejército asirio,
15 and detailed the picked troops as his master had ordered, about a hundred and twenty thousand menand a further twelve thousand mounted archers.	15 y eligió a los hombres más selectos para la guerra, como lo había ordenado su señor: unos 120.000 hombres, más 12.000 arqueros a caballo,
16 He organised these in the normal battle formation.	16 y los puso en orden de combate, como se ordena una multitud para la batalla.
17 He then secured vast numbers of camels, donkeys and mules to carry the baggage, and innumerablesheep, oxen and goats for food supplies.	17 Tomó una gran cantidad de camellos, asnos y mulas para el bagage e incontable número de ovejas, bueyes y cabras para el avituallamiento;
18 Every man received ful rations and a generous sum of gold and silver from the king's purse.	18 provisiones abundantes para cada hombre y muchísimo oro y plata de la casa real.
19 He then set out for the campaign with his whole army, in advance of King Nebuchadnezzar, tooverwhelm the whole western region with his chariots, his horsemen and his picked body of foot.	19 Se puso luego Holofernes en camino con todo su ejército para preceder al rey Nabucodonosor y para cubrir toda la superficie de la tierra de occidente con sus carros, sus caballos y sus mejores infantes.
20 A motley gathering fol owed in his rear, as numerous as locusts or the grains of sand on the ground;there was no counting their multitude.	20 Se les agregó una multitud tan numerosa como la langosta y como la arena de la tierra, que les seguía en tan gran número que no se podía calcular.
21 Thus they set out from Nineveh and marched for three days towards the Plain of Bectileth. FromBectileth they went on to pitch camp near the mountains that lie to the north of Upper Cilicia.	21 Se alejaron de Nínive tres jornadas de camino hasta la llanura de Bektilez, y acamparon junto a Bektilez, cerca del monte que está a la izquierda de la Cilicia superior.
22 From there Holofernes advanced into the highlands with his whole army, infantry, horsemen, chariots.	22 Tomó todo su ejército, infantes, jinetes y carros, y partió de allí hacia la montaña.
23 He cut his way through Put and Lud, carried away captive al the sons of Rassis and sons of Ishmaelliving on the verge of the desert south of Cheleon,	23 Desbarató a Put y Lud, devastó a todos los hijos de Rassis y a los hijos de Ismael que están al borde del desierto, al sur de Jeleón,
24 marched along the Euphrates, crossed Mesopotamia, rased al the fortified towns controlling the WadiAbron and reached the sea.	24 atravesó el Eufrates, recorrió Mesopotamia, arrasó todas las ciudades altas que dominan el torrente Abroná y llegó hasta el mar.
25 Next he attacked the territories of Cilicia, butchering al who offered him resistance, advanced on thesouthern frontiers of Japheth, facing Arabia,	25 Se apoderó del territorio de Cilicia y, derrotando a cuantos se le oponían, alcanzó la frontera de Jafet por el sur, frente a Arabia.
26 completely encircled the Midianites, burned their tents and plundered their sheep-folds,	26 Cercó a todos los madianitas, incendió sus tiendas y saqueó sus aduares;
27 made his way down to the Damascus plain at the time of the wheat harvest, set fire to the fields,destroyed the flocks and herds, sacked the towns, laid the countryside waste and put al the young men to thesword.	27 descendió hacia la llanura de Damasco, al tiempo de la siega del trigo, incendió todos sus cultivos, exterminó sus rebaños de ovejas y bueyes, saqueó sus ciudades, devastó sus campos y pasó a cuchillo a todos sus jóvenes.
28 Fear and trembling seized al the coastal peoples; those of Sidon and Tyre, those of Sur, Ocina andJamnia. The populations of Azotos and Ascalon were panic-stricken.	28 Temor y espanto de él cayó sobre todos los habitantes del litoral. Los de Sidón y Tiro, los habitantes de Sur y Okina, los de Yamnia, Azoto y Ascalón temblaron ante él.
