1 In the eighteenth year, on the twenty-second day of the first month, a rumour ran through the palace thatNebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians was to have his revenge on al the countries, as he had threatened.	1 Nell’anno diciottesimo, il giorno ventidue del primo mese, corse voce nel palazzo di Nabucodònosor, re degli Assiri, che egli avrebbe fatto vendetta contro tutte quelle regioni, come aveva detto.
2 Summoning his general staff and senior officers, he held a secret conference with them, and with hisown lips pronounced utter destruction on the entire area.	2 Radunò tutti i suoi ministri e tutti i dignitari, tenne con loro consiglio segreto e decise egli stesso la distruzione totale di quelle regioni.
3 It was then decreed that everyone should be put to death who had not answered the king's appeal.	3 Essi decisero di sterminare tutti quelli che non si erano allineati con l’ordine da lui emanato.
4 When the council was over, Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians sent for Holofernes, general-in-chiefof his armies and subordinate only to himself. He said to him,	4 Quando ebbe finito la consultazione, Nabucodònosor, re degli Assiri, chiamò Oloferne, generale supremo del suo esercito, che teneva il secondo posto dopo di lui, e gli disse:
5 'Thus speaks the Great King, lord of the whole world, "Go; take men of proven valour, about a hundredand twenty thousand foot soldiers and a strong company of horse with twelve thousand cavalrymen;	5 «Questo dice il grande re, il signore di tutta la terra: “Ecco, partito dalla mia presenza, tu prenderai con te uomini di indiscusso valore: centoventimila fanti e un contingente di dodicimila cavalli con i loro cavalieri;
6 then advance against all the western lands, since these people have disregarded my cal .	6 quindi marcerai contro tutti i paesi di occidente, perché quelle regioni hanno disobbedito al mio comando.
7 Bid them have earth and water ready, because in my rage I am about to march on them; the feet of mysoldiers wil cover the whole face of the earth, and I shal plunder it.	7 A costoro comanderai di preparare terra e acqua, perché con collera io piomberò su di loro e coprirò tutta la faccia della terra con i piedi del mio esercito e li darò in suo potere per il saccheggio.
8 Their wounded will fil the val eys and the torrents, and rivers, blocked with their dead, wil overflow.	8 Quelli di loro che cadranno colpiti riempiranno le loro valli, e ogni torrente e fiume sarà pieno dei loro cadaveri fino a straripare;
9 I shall lead them captive to the ends of the earth.	9 i loro prigionieri li condurrò fino agli estremi confini della terra.
10 Now go! Begin by conquering this whole region for me. If they surrender to you, hold them for me untilthe time comes to punish them.	10 Tu dunque va’ e occupa per me tutto il loro paese e, quando si saranno arresi a te, li terrai a mia disposizione fino al giorno del loro castigo.
11 But if they resist, look on no one with clemency, hand them over to slaughter and plunder throughoutthe territory entrusted to you.	11 Quanto ai ribelli, il tuo occhio non li risparmierà dalla morte e dalla devastazione in tutto il territorio.
12 For by my life and by the living power of my kingdom I have spoken. Al this I shal do by my power.	12 Come è vero che vivo io e vive la potenza del mio regno, questo ho detto e questo farò di mia mano.
13 And you, neglect none of your master's commands, act strictly according to my orders without furtherdelay." '	13 E tu non trasgredire parola alcuna del tuo signore, ma porta a compimento con ogni cura ciò che ti ho comandato e non indugiare a eseguire queste cose”».
14 Leaving the presence of his sovereign, Holofernes immediately summoned al the marshals, generalsand officers of the Assyrian army	14 Partito dalla presenza del suo signore, Oloferne convocò tutti i comandanti, gli strateghi e gli ufficiali dell’esercito assiro;
15 and detailed the picked troops as his master had ordered, about a hundred and twenty thousand menand a further twelve thousand mounted archers.	15 quindi, come gli aveva ordinato il suo signore, contò gli uomini che aveva scelto per la spedizione in numero di centoventimila, più dodicimila arcieri a cavallo,
16 He organised these in the normal battle formation.	16 e li dispose come si usa schierare la truppa per la guerra.
17 He then secured vast numbers of camels, donkeys and mules to carry the baggage, and innumerablesheep, oxen and goats for food supplies.	17 Prese poi cammelli e asini e muli in dotazione alle truppe, in numero grandissimo, e ancora pecore e buoi e capre, in quantità innumerevole per il loro vettovagliamento.
18 Every man received ful rations and a generous sum of gold and silver from the king's purse.	18 Provvide ancora razioni in abbondanza per ciascun uomo e gran rifornimento d’oro e d’argento dal tesoro del re.
19 He then set out for the campaign with his whole army, in advance of King Nebuchadnezzar, tooverwhelm the whole western region with his chariots, his horsemen and his picked body of foot.	19 Poi lui e tutte le sue truppe si misero in marcia, per precedere il re Nabucodònosor e coprire tutta la faccia della terra di occidente con i loro carri, i cavalieri e la fanteria scelta.
20 A motley gathering fol owed in his rear, as numerous as locusts or the grains of sand on the ground;there was no counting their multitude.	20 Con loro si mise in cammino una moltitudine varia, numerosa come le cavallette e come la polvere del suolo, che non si poteva contare per la grande quantità.
21 Thus they set out from Nineveh and marched for three days towards the Plain of Bectileth. FromBectileth they went on to pitch camp near the mountains that lie to the north of Upper Cilicia.	21 Partirono da Ninive camminando tre giorni in direzione della pianura di Bectilèt, e da Bectilèt andarono ad accamparsi vicino al monte che sta sulla sinistra della Cilicia superiore.
22 From there Holofernes advanced into the highlands with his whole army, infantry, horsemen, chariots.	22 Di là, con tutto il suo esercito, fanti e cavalli e carri, Oloferne si diresse verso la montagna.
23 He cut his way through Put and Lud, carried away captive al the sons of Rassis and sons of Ishmaelliving on the verge of the desert south of Cheleon,	23 Devastò Fud e Lud, e depredò tutti i figli di Rassìs e gli Ismaeliti, che abitavano di fronte al deserto, a sud di Cheleòn.
24 marched along the Euphrates, crossed Mesopotamia, rased al the fortified towns controlling the WadiAbron and reached the sea.	24 Passò l’Eufrate, attraversò la Mesopotamia e demolì tutte le città che s’innalzavano sul torrente Abronà, giungendo fino al mare.
25 Next he attacked the territories of Cilicia, butchering al who offered him resistance, advanced on thesouthern frontiers of Japheth, facing Arabia,	25 Invase i paesi della Cilicia, sterminò quanti gli si opponevano e arrivò ai confini meridionali di Iafet, di fronte all’Arabia.
26 completely encircled the Midianites, burned their tents and plundered their sheep-folds,	26 Accerchiò anche tutti i Madianiti, appiccò il fuoco alle loro tende e depredò il loro bestiame.
27 made his way down to the Damascus plain at the time of the wheat harvest, set fire to the fields,destroyed the flocks and herds, sacked the towns, laid the countryside waste and put al the young men to thesword.	27 Scese verso la pianura di Damasco nei giorni della mietitura del grano, diede fuoco a tutti i loro campi e votò allo sterminio le loro greggi e gli armenti, saccheggiò le loro città, devastò le loro campagne e passò a fil di spada tutti i loro giovani.
28 Fear and trembling seized al the coastal peoples; those of Sidon and Tyre, those of Sur, Ocina andJamnia. The populations of Azotos and Ascalon were panic-stricken.	28 Allora la paura e il terrore di lui si diffusero fra tutti gli abitanti della costa, quelli che si trovavano a Sidone e a Tiro, gli abitanti di Sur e di Okinà e tutti quelli di Iàmnia; anche gli abitanti di Azoto e di Àscalon furono presi da grande terrore.
