NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 In the eighteenth year, on the twenty-second day of the first month, a rumour ran through the palace thatNebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians was to have his revenge on al the countries, as he had threatened.	1 El año decimoctavo, el día veintidós del primer mes, se notificó en el palacio de Nabucodonosor, rey de los asirios, que él se vengaría de toda la tierra, como lo había anunciado.
2 Summoning his general staff and senior officers, he held a secret conference with them, and with hisown lips pronounced utter destruction on the entire area.	2 El rey convocó a todos sus oficiales y a todos sus funcionarios, se reunió en consejo secreto con ellos y decretó él mismo el exterminio de toda la tierra.
3 It was then decreed that everyone should be put to death who had not answered the king's appeal.	3 Entonces, de común acuerdo, se decidió aniquilar a todos los que no habían respondido al llamado del rey.
4 When the council was over, Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians sent for Holofernes, general-in-chiefof his armies and subordinate only to himself. He said to him,	4 Una vez terminado el consejo, Nabucodonosor, rey de los asirios, llamó a Holofernes, general en jefe de su ejército y segundo después de él, y le dijo:
5 'Thus speaks the Great King, lord of the whole world, "Go; take men of proven valour, about a hundredand twenty thousand foot soldiers and a strong company of horse with twelve thousand cavalrymen;	5 «Así habla el gran rey, el señor de toda la tierra: Al; salir de mi presencia, tomarás contigo hombres de reconocido valor –unos ciento veinte mil soldados de infantería y un contingente de doce mil caballos con sus jinetes
6 then advance against all the western lands, since these people have disregarded my cal .	6 y atacarás a todos los pueblos de Occidentes, porque se negaron a escuchar mi llamado.
7 Bid them have earth and water ready, because in my rage I am about to march on them; the feet of mysoldiers wil cover the whole face of the earth, and I shal plunder it.	7 Intímalos a que se sometan totalmente, porque en mi indignación voy a marchar contra ellos; cubriré toda la superficie de la tierra con los pies de mis soldados y se la entregaré al saqueo:
8 Their wounded will fil the val eys and the torrents, and rivers, blocked with their dead, wil overflow.	8 los heridos colmarán sus valles; los torrentes y los ríos desbordarán, llenos de cadáveres,
9 I shall lead them captive to the ends of the earth.	9 y deportaré a sus cautivos hasta los confines de la tierra.
10 Now go! Begin by conquering this whole region for me. If they surrender to you, hold them for me untilthe time comes to punish them.	10 Parte en seguida y ocupa para mí sus territorios. A los que se te sometan, resérvamelos para el día de su castigo;
11 But if they resist, look on no one with clemency, hand them over to slaughter and plunder throughoutthe territory entrusted to you.	11 pero no perdones a los rebeldes: entrégalos a la matanza y al saqueo en todas partes.
12 For by my life and by the living power of my kingdom I have spoken. Al this I shal do by my power.	12 Porque juro por mi vida y por el poder de mi reino que ejecutaré con mi propia mano lo que acabo de decir.
13 And you, neglect none of your master's commands, act strictly according to my orders without furtherdelay." '	13 No quebrantes ni una sola de las órdenes de tu señor, sino ejecútalas estrictamente como te lo he mandado. ¡Cúmplelas sin tardanza!».
14 Leaving the presence of his sovereign, Holofernes immediately summoned al the marshals, generalsand officers of the Assyrian army	14 Apenas se alejó de la presencia de su señor, Holofernes convocó a todos los generales, oficiales y capitanes del ejército asirio.
15 and detailed the picked troops as his master had ordered, about a hundred and twenty thousand menand a further twelve thousand mounted archers.	15 Reclutó para la campaña unos ciento veinte mil soldados escogidos y doce mil arqueros de a caballo, como se lo había ordenado su señor,
16 He organised these in the normal battle formation.	16 y los dispuso en orden de batalla.
17 He then secured vast numbers of camels, donkeys and mules to carry the baggage, and innumerablesheep, oxen and goats for food supplies.	17 Juntó, además, un gran número de camellos, asnos y mulos para el equipaje, así como también innumerables ovejas, bueyes y cabras para el abastecimiento;
18 Every man received ful rations and a generous sum of gold and silver from the king's purse.	18 y cada hombre recibió provisiones en abundancia y una gran cantidad de oro y plata del palacio real.
19 He then set out for the campaign with his whole army, in advance of King Nebuchadnezzar, tooverwhelm the whole western region with his chariots, his horsemen and his picked body of foot.	19 Holofernes avanzó con todo su ejército, para preceder al rey Nabucodonosor y cubrir toda la superficie de la tierra, hacia Occidente, con sus carros de guerra, sus jinetes y sus soldados escogidos.
20 A motley gathering fol owed in his rear, as numerous as locusts or the grains of sand on the ground;there was no counting their multitude.	20 Lo seguía una multitud numerosa como las langostas y como los granos de arena de la tierra: su número era incalculable.
21 Thus they set out from Nineveh and marched for three days towards the Plain of Bectileth. FromBectileth they went on to pitch camp near the mountains that lie to the north of Upper Cilicia.	21 Desde Nínive, avanzaron durante tres días en dirección a la llanura de Bectilet, y acamparon en sus inmediaciones, al pie de la montaña que está a la izquierda de la Cilicia superior.
22 From there Holofernes advanced into the highlands with his whole army, infantry, horsemen, chariots.	22 Desde allí, Holofernes penetró en la región montañosa con todo su ejército de soldados, jinetes y carros de guerra.
23 He cut his way through Put and Lud, carried away captive al the sons of Rassis and sons of Ishmaelliving on the verge of the desert south of Cheleon,	23 Luego se abrió camino a través de Fud y de Lud, y arrasó a todos los rasitas e ismaelitas que estaban al borde del desierto, hacia el sur de Jeleón.
24 marched along the Euphrates, crossed Mesopotamia, rased al the fortified towns controlling the WadiAbron and reached the sea.	24 En seguida vadeó el Eufrates, atravesó la Mesopotamia y destruyó todas las plazas fuertes en las riberas del torrente Abrona, hasta las costas del mar.
25 Next he attacked the territories of Cilicia, butchering al who offered him resistance, advanced on thesouthern frontiers of Japheth, facing Arabia,	25 Después ocupó los territorios de la Cilicia, destrozó a cuantos le opusieron resistencia y avanzó hasta los confines meridionales de Jafet, en las fronteras de Arabia.
26 completely encircled the Midianites, burned their tents and plundered their sheep-folds,	26 Sitió a todos los madianitas, incendió sus campamentos y saqueó sus establos.
27 made his way down to the Damascus plain at the time of the wheat harvest, set fire to the fields,destroyed the flocks and herds, sacked the towns, laid the countryside waste and put al the young men to thesword.	27 Descendió luego a la llanura de Damasco, en la época de la cosecha del trigo, e incendió todos sus sembrados; exterminó ovejas y vacas, saqueó sus ciudades, arrasó sus campos y pasó a todos sus jóvenes al filo de la espada.
28 Fear and trembling seized al the coastal peoples; those of Sidon and Tyre, those of Sur, Ocina andJamnia. The populations of Azotos and Ascalon were panic-stricken.	28 El pánico y el terror se apoderaron de todo el litoral: de los habitantes de Sidón y de Tiro, de Sur y de Oquina, y de todos los habitantes de Iamnia. También los de Azoto y Ascalón quedaron despavoridos ante él.
