Nehemiah 2

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, since I was in charge of the wine, I tookthe wine and offered it to the king. Now, he had never seen me looking depressed before.	1 Nel mese di Nisan, l'anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, men­tre il vino si trovava dinanzi a lui, io presi il vino e lo presentai al re. Siccome io stavo come un sofferente davanti al suo cospetto,
2 So the king said to me, 'Why are you looking depressed? You are not sick! This must be a sadness ofthe heart.' Thoroughly alarmed by this,	2 il re mi disse: « Perchè hai l'aspetto triste? Malato non sembri. Un motivo ci deve essere; ma io non conosco il male che è nel tuo cuore ». Io, pieno di grandissima paura,
3 I said to the king, 'May the king live for ever! How can I not look depressed when the city where thetombs of my ancestors are lies in ruins and its gates have been burnt down?'	3 dissi al re: « O re, vivi in eterno! Come potrebbe non esser triste la mia faccia, mentre la città, luogo dei sepolcri dei miei padri, è deserta e le sue porte son consumate dal fuoco? »
4 The king then said to me, 'What would you like me to do?' Praying to the God of heaven,	4 Il re mi disse: « Che domandi? » Io, pregato il Dio del cielo,
5 I said to the king, 'If the king approves and your servant enjoys your favour, send me to Judah, to thecity of the tombs of my ancestors, so that I can rebuild it.'	5 dissi al re: « Se così piace al re, se il tuo servo ha trovato grazia davanti al tuo cospetto, mandami nella Giudea, alla città del sepolcro di mio padre, a riedificarla ».
6 The king -- with the queen sitting beside him-said, 'How long wil your journey take, and when wil youcome back?' Once I had given him a definite time, the king approved my mission.	6 Allora, il re, colla regina che gli sedeva accanto, mi disse: « Quanto durerà il tuo viaggio? quando ritornerai? » Essendo piaciuto al cospetto del re di mandarmi, io gli fissai il tempo.
7 I then said to the king, 'If the king approves, may I be given orders for the governors of Transeuphratesto let me pass through on my way to Judah?	7 Poi dissi al re: « Se al re piace, mi dia lettere per i governatori del paese di là dal fiume, affinchè mi facciano condurre, finché io non sia arrivato nella Giudea,
8 Also an order for Asaph, keeper of the king's forest, to supply me with timber for the beams of the gatesof the citadel of the Temple, for the city wal s and for the house which I am to occupy?' These the king grantedme because the kindly hand of my God was over me.	8 e una lettera a Asaf, custode della foresta reale, affinchè mi dia legname per coprire le porte della torre della casa, le mura della città e la casa nella quale andrò a stare io ». Il re, essendomi favorevole la mano del mio Dio, mi diede le lettere.
9 When I reached the governors of Transeuphrates, I gave them the king's orders. The king had sent anescort of army officers and cavalry along with me.	9 Giunto che fui dai governatori del paese di là dal fiume, diedi loro le lettere del re. Il re aveva mandato con me dei capi della milizia e dei cavalieri.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the official of Ammon heard about this, they wereexceedingly displeased that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.	10 Or quando Sanaballat Horonita e Tobia, servo Ammonita, ne furono informati, ebbero gran dispiacere della venuta d'un uomo che procurasse il bene dei figli d'Israele.
11 And so I reached Jerusalem. After I had been there three days,	11 Giunto a Gerusalemme, dopo avervi passato tre giorni,
12 I got up during the night with a few other men -- I had not told anyone what my God had inspired me todo for Jerusalem -- taking no animal with me other than my own mount.	12 mi levai di notte con pochi uomini, senza manifestare ad alcuno quel che Dio m'aveva messo in cuore di fare in Gerusalemme, e senza avere con me altro giumento oltre quello da me cavalcato.
13 Under cover of dark I went out through the Val ey Gate towards the Dragon's Fountain as far as theDung Gate, and examined the wall of Jerusalem where it was broken down and its gates burnt out.	13 Uscito di notte per la porta della Valle, (passando) davanti alla fonte del Dragone e alla porta del Letame, andai ad esaminare le mura di Gerusalemme atterrate e le sue porte consumate dal fuoco.
14 I then crossed to the Fountain Gate and the King's Pool, but it was impassable to my mount.	14 Passai pei alla porta della fontana e all'acquedotto del re, e non essendovi posto da passare col giumento da me cavalcato,
15 So I went up the Val ey in the dark, examining the wal ; I then went in again through the Val ey Gate,coming back	15 salii durante la notte pel torrente, esaminai le mura, fino a ritornare alla porta della Valle. Poi me ne ritornai.
16 without the officials knowing where I had gone or what I had been doing. So far I had said nothing tothe Jews: neither to the priests, the nobles, the officials nor any other persons involved in the undertaking.	16 I magistrati non sapevano dove fossi andato, nè quel che facessi, e fino a quel momento io non avevo detto nulla, nè ai Giudei, nè ai sacerdoti, nè ai grandi, nè ai magistrati, nè a quelli che facevano i lavori.
17 I then said to them, 'You see what a sorry state we are in: Jerusalem is in ruins and its gates havebeen burnt down. Come on, we must rebuild the wal s of Jerusalem and put an end to our humiliating position!'	17 Poi dissi loro: « Voi conoscete l'afflizione nella quale ci troviamo: Gerusalemme è deserta, le sue porte son consumate dal fuoco: venite, riedifichiamo le mura di Gerusalemme, per non stare più in questo obbrobrio ».
18 And I told them how the kindly hand of my God had been over me, and the words which the king hadsaid to me. At this they said, 'Let us start building at once!' and they set their hands to the good work.	18 Esposto come mi avesse favorito la mano del mio Dio, riferite le parole che il re m'aveva dette, soggiunsi: « Su via, mettiamoci a fabbricare! » E le loro mani presero vigore per lavorare nel bene.
19 When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the official of Ammon, and Geshem the Arab heard about this,they laughed at us and jeered. They said, 'What is this you are doing? Are you going to revolt against the king?'	19 Ma Sanaballat Horonita, Tobia, servo Ammonita, e Gosem Arabo, udito ciò, si misero a beffarsi di noi, a disprezzarci e a dire: « Che cosa vi mettete a fare? Forse vi ribellate contro il re? »
20 But I gave them this answer, 'The God of heaven will grant us success and we, his servants, mean tostart building; as for you, you have neither share nor right nor memorial in Jerusalem.'	20 Ma io in risposta dissi loro: « Il Dio stesso del cielo ci aiuta, e noi siamo suoi servi e possiamo metterci a fabbricare; ma voi non avete parte, nè diritto, nè memoria in Gerusalemme ».
