Nehemiah 2

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, since I was in charge of the wine, I tookthe wine and offered it to the king. Now, he had never seen me looking depressed before.	1 En el mes de Nisán, el año veinte del rey Artajerjes, siendo yo encargado del vino, tomé vino y se lo ofrecí al rey. Anteriormente nunca había estado yo triste.
2 So the king said to me, 'Why are you looking depressed? You are not sick! This must be a sadness ofthe heart.' Thoroughly alarmed by this,	2 Me dijo, pues, el rey: «¿Por qué ese semblante tan triste? Tú, enfermo no estás. ¿Acaso tienes alguna preocupación en el corazón?» Yo quedé muy turbado,
3 I said to the king, 'May the king live for ever! How can I not look depressed when the city where thetombs of my ancestors are lies in ruins and its gates have been burnt down?'	3 y dije al rey: «¡Viva por siempre el rey! ¿Cómo no ha de estar triste mi semblante, cuando la ciudad donde están las tumbas de mis padres está en ruinas, y sus puertas devoradas por el fuego?»
4 The king then said to me, 'What would you like me to do?' Praying to the God of heaven,	4 Replicóme el rey: «¿Qué deseas, pues?» Invoqué al Dios del cielo,
5 I said to the king, 'If the king approves and your servant enjoys your favour, send me to Judah, to thecity of the tombs of my ancestors, so that I can rebuild it.'	5 y respondí al rey: «Si le place al rey y estás satisfecho de tu siervo, envíame a Judá, a la ciudad de las tumbas de mis padres, para que yo la reconstruya».
6 The king -- with the queen sitting beside him-said, 'How long wil your journey take, and when wil youcome back?' Once I had given him a definite time, the king approved my mission.	6 El rey me preguntó, estando la reina sentada a su lado: «¿Cuánto durará tu viaje? ¿Cuándo volverás?» Yo le fijé un plazo que pareció aceptable al rey, y él me envió.
7 I then said to the king, 'If the king approves, may I be given orders for the governors of Transeuphratesto let me pass through on my way to Judah?	7 Añadí al rey: «Si le place al rey, que se me den cartas para los gobernadores de Transeufratina, para que me faciliten el camino hasta Judá;
8 Also an order for Asaph, keeper of the king's forest, to supply me with timber for the beams of the gatesof the citadel of the Temple, for the city wal s and for the house which I am to occupy?' These the king grantedme because the kindly hand of my God was over me.	8 y asimismo una carta para Asaf, el encargado de los parques reales, para que me proporcione madera de construcción para las puertas de la ciudadela del Templo, la muralla de la ciudad y la casa en que yo me he de instalar». El rey me lo concedió, pues la mano bondadosa de mi Dios estaba conmigo.
9 When I reached the governors of Transeuphrates, I gave them the king's orders. The king had sent anescort of army officers and cavalry along with me.	9 Me dirigí, pues, a los gobernadores de Transeufratina y les entregué las cartas del rey. El rey me había hecho escoltar por oficiales del ejército y gente de a caballo.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the official of Ammon heard about this, they wereexceedingly displeased that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.	10 Al enterarse de ello Samballat el joronita y Tobías el servidor ammonita, les sentó muy mal que alguien viniera a procurar el bienestar de los israelitas.
11 And so I reached Jerusalem. After I had been there three days,	11 Llegué a Jerusalén y me quedé allí tres días.
12 I got up during the night with a few other men -- I had not told anyone what my God had inspired me todo for Jerusalem -- taking no animal with me other than my own mount.	12 Luego me levanté de noche con unos pocos hombres, sin comunicar a nadie lo que mi Dios me había inspirado que hiciera por Jerusalén, y sin llevar conmigo más que la cabalgadura en que iba montado.
13 Under cover of dark I went out through the Val ey Gate towards the Dragon's Fountain as far as theDung Gate, and examined the wall of Jerusalem where it was broken down and its gates burnt out.	13 Saliendo, pues, de noche por la puerta del Valle, me dirigí hacia la Fuente del Dragón y hacia la puerta del Muladar: inspeccioné la muralla de Jerusalén por donde tenía brechas, y las puertas que habían sido devoradas por el fuego.
14 I then crossed to the Fountain Gate and the King's Pool, but it was impassable to my mount.	14 Continué luego hacia la puerta de la Fuente y la alberca del Rey, pero no había paso para mi cabalgadura.
15 So I went up the Val ey in the dark, examining the wal ; I then went in again through the Val ey Gate,coming back	15 Volví a subir, pues, de noche, por el Torrente, inspeccionando la muralla, y volví a entrar por la puerta del Valle. Así regresé a casa.
16 without the officials knowing where I had gone or what I had been doing. So far I had said nothing tothe Jews: neither to the priests, the nobles, the officials nor any other persons involved in the undertaking.	16 Los consejeros no supieron dónde había ido ni lo que había hecho. Hasta entonces no había dicho nada a los judíos: ni a los sacerdotes ni a los notables ni a los consejeros ni a los funcionarios;
17 I then said to them, 'You see what a sorry state we are in: Jerusalem is in ruins and its gates havebeen burnt down. Come on, we must rebuild the wal s of Jerusalem and put an end to our humiliating position!'	17 entonces les dije: «Vosotros mismos veis la triste situación en que nos encontramos, pues Jerusalén está en ruinas, y sus puertas devoradas por el fuego. Vamos a reconstruir la muralla de Jerusalén, y no seremos más objeto de escarnio».
18 And I told them how the kindly hand of my God had been over me, and the words which the king hadsaid to me. At this they said, 'Let us start building at once!' and they set their hands to the good work.	18 Y les referí cómo la mano bondadosa de mi Dios había estado conmigo, y les relaté también las palabras que el rey me había dicho. Ellos dijeron: «¡Levantémonos y construyamos!» Y se afianzaron en su buen propósito.
19 When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the official of Ammon, and Geshem the Arab heard about this,they laughed at us and jeered. They said, 'What is this you are doing? Are you going to revolt against the king?'	19 Al enterarse de ello Samballat el joronita, Tobías el siervo ammonita y Guésem el árabe, se burlaron de nosotros y vinieron a decirnos: «¿Qué hacéis? ¿Es que os habéis rebelado contra el rey?»
20 But I gave them this answer, 'The God of heaven will grant us success and we, his servants, mean tostart building; as for you, you have neither share nor right nor memorial in Jerusalem.'	20 Yo les respondí: «El Dios del cielo nos hará triunfar. Nosotros sus siervos, vamos a ponernos a la obra. En cuanto a vosotros, no tenéis parte ni derecho ni recuerdo en Jerusalén».
