Nehemiah 2

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, since I was in charge of the wine, I tookthe wine and offered it to the king. Now, he had never seen me looking depressed before.	1 En el mes de Nisán, el vigésimo año del reinado de Artajerjes, siendo yo el encargado del vino, lo tomé y se lo ofrecí al rey. Como nunca había estado triste en su presencia,
2 So the king said to me, 'Why are you looking depressed? You are not sick! This must be a sadness ofthe heart.' Thoroughly alarmed by this,	2 el rey me preguntó: «¿Por qué tienes esa cara tan triste? Tú no estás enfermo. Seguramente hay algo que te aflige». Yo experimenté una gran turbación,
3 I said to the king, 'May the king live for ever! How can I not look depressed when the city where thetombs of my ancestors are lies in ruins and its gates have been burnt down?'	3 y dije al rey: «¡Viva el rey para siempre! ¿Cómo no voy a estar con la cara triste, si la ciudad donde están las tumbas de mis padres se encuentra en ruinas y sus puertas han sido consumidas por el fuego?».
4 The king then said to me, 'What would you like me to do?' Praying to the God of heaven,	4 El rey me dijo: ¿Qué es lo que quieres? Yo me encomendé al Dios del cielo,
5 I said to the king, 'If the king approves and your servant enjoys your favour, send me to Judah, to thecity of the tombs of my ancestors, so that I can rebuild it.'	5 y le respondí: «Si es del agrado del rey y tú estás contento con tu servidor, envíame a Judá, a la ciudad donde están las tumbas de mis padres, para que yo la reconstruya».
6 The king -- with the queen sitting beside him-said, 'How long wil your journey take, and when wil youcome back?' Once I had given him a definite time, the king approved my mission.	6 El rey, que tenía a la reina sentada a su lado, me dijo: «¿Cuánto tiempo durará tu viaje y cuándo estarás de regreso?». Al rey le pareció bien autorizar mi partida, y yo le fijé un plazo.
7 I then said to the king, 'If the king approves, may I be given orders for the governors of Transeuphratesto let me pass through on my way to Judah?	7 Luego dije al rey: «Si el rey lo considera conveniente, se me podrían dar cartas para los gobernadores del otro lado del Eufrates, a fin de que me faciliten el viaje a Judá.
8 Also an order for Asaph, keeper of the king's forest, to supply me with timber for the beams of the gatesof the citadel of the Temple, for the city wal s and for the house which I am to occupy?' These the king grantedme because the kindly hand of my God was over me.	8 También podrían darme una carta para Asaf, el supervisor de los parques del rey, a fin de que me provea de madera para armar las puertas de la ciudadela del Templo, para las murallas de la ciudad y para la casa donde voy a vivir». El rey me concedió todo eso, porque la mano bondadosa de mi Dios estaba sobre mí.
9 When I reached the governors of Transeuphrates, I gave them the king's orders. The king had sent anescort of army officers and cavalry along with me.	9 Yo me presenté ante los gobernadores del otro lado del Eufrates y les entregué las cartas del rey. Además, el rey me había hecho escoltar por oficiales del ejército y por algunos jinetes.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the official of Ammon heard about this, they wereexceedingly displeased that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.	10 Pero cuando Sambalat, el joronita, y Tobías, el esclavo amonita, se enteraron de mi llegada, se disgustaron mucho de que alguien viniera a prestar ayuda a los israelitas.
11 And so I reached Jerusalem. After I had been there three days,	11 Al llegar a Jerusalén, dejé pasar tres días.
12 I got up during the night with a few other men -- I had not told anyone what my God had inspired me todo for Jerusalem -- taking no animal with me other than my own mount.	12 Luego me levanté de noche, acompañado de unos pocos hombres, sin comunicar a nadie lo que Dios me había inspirado hacer en favor de Jerusalén y sin llevar otro animal que aquel en el que iba montado.
13 Under cover of dark I went out through the Val ey Gate towards the Dragon's Fountain as far as theDung Gate, and examined the wall of Jerusalem where it was broken down and its gates burnt out.	13 Salí de noche por la puerta del Valle, en dirección a la fuente del Dragón y a la puerta del Basural, e inspeccioné atentamente las murallas de Jerusalén, allí donde había brechas y donde las puertas habían sido consumidas por el fuego.
14 I then crossed to the Fountain Gate and the King's Pool, but it was impassable to my mount.	14 Proseguí mi camino hacia la puerta de la Fuente y hacia el estanque del Rey, pero no encontré un lugar por donde pasar con mi cabalgadura.
15 So I went up the Val ey in the dark, examining the wal ; I then went in again through the Val ey Gate,coming back	15 Subí entonces de noche por el Cedrón, inspeccionando siempre las murallas, y luego volví atrás, pasando de nuevo por la puerta del Valle.
16 without the officials knowing where I had gone or what I had been doing. So far I had said nothing tothe Jews: neither to the priests, the nobles, the officials nor any other persons involved in the undertaking.	16 Los magistrados no sabían adónde habían ido ni qué habían hecho: hasta ese momento, yo no había comunicado nada a los judíos, ni a los sacerdotes, ni a los notables, ni a los magistrados, ni a los otros encargados de los trabajos.
17 I then said to them, 'You see what a sorry state we are in: Jerusalem is in ruins and its gates havebeen burnt down. Come on, we must rebuild the wal s of Jerusalem and put an end to our humiliating position!'	17 Entonces dije: «Ustedes ven en qué lamentable situación nos encontramos. Jerusalén esté en ruinas y sus puertas incendiadas. ¡Reconstruyamos las murallas de Jerusalén, y no seremos más objeto de oprobio!».
18 And I told them how the kindly hand of my God had been over me, and the words which the king hadsaid to me. At this they said, 'Let us start building at once!' and they set their hands to the good work.	18 Luego les expliqué cómo la mano bondadosa de mi Dios había estado sobre mí y también les comuniqué las palabras que me había dicho el rey. «¡Vamos, dijeron ellos, pongámonos a trabajar!». Y emprendieron esta buena obra con toda decisión.
19 When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the official of Ammon, and Geshem the Arab heard about this,they laughed at us and jeered. They said, 'What is this you are doing? Are you going to revolt against the king?'	19 Cuando Sambalat, el joronita, Tobías, el esclavo amonita, y Guésem, el árabe, se enteraron de esto, se burlaron de nosotros y nos despreciaron, diciendo: «¿Qué están haciendo? ¿Se van a rebelar contra el rey?».
20 But I gave them this answer, 'The God of heaven will grant us success and we, his servants, mean tostart building; as for you, you have neither share nor right nor memorial in Jerusalem.'	20 Yo, por mi parte, les respondí: «El Dios del cielo nos coronará con el éxito. Nosotros, sus servidores, nos pondremos a trabajar. Ustedes, en cambio, no tienen parte, ni derechos, ni recuerdos en Jerusalén».
