Nehemiah 2

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 In the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, since I was in charge of the wine, I tookthe wine and offered it to the king. Now, he had never seen me looking depressed before.	1 Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme j'étais chargé du vin, je pris le vinet l'offris au roi. Je n'avais, auparavant, jamais été triste.
2 So the king said to me, 'Why are you looking depressed? You are not sick! This must be a sadness ofthe heart.' Thoroughly alarmed by this,	2 Aussi le roi me dit-il: "Pourquoi ce triste visage? Tu n'es pourtant pas malade? Non, c'estassurément une affliction du coeur!" Je fus pris d'une vive appréhension
3 I said to the king, 'May the king live for ever! How can I not look depressed when the city where thetombs of my ancestors are lies in ruins and its gates have been burnt down?'	3 et dis au roi: "Que le roi vive à jamais! Comment mon visage ne serait-il pas triste quand la villeoù sont les tombeaux de mes pères est en ruines et ses portes dévorées par le feu?"
4 The king then said to me, 'What would you like me to do?' Praying to the God of heaven,	4 Et le roi de me dire: "Quelle est donc ta requête?" J'invoquai le Dieu du ciel
5 I said to the king, 'If the king approves and your servant enjoys your favour, send me to Judah, to thecity of the tombs of my ancestors, so that I can rebuild it.'	5 et répondis au roi: "S'il plaît au roi et que tu sois satisfait de ton serviteur, laisse-moi aller en Juda,dans la ville des tombeaux de mes pères, que je la reconstruise."
6 The king -- with the queen sitting beside him-said, 'How long wil your journey take, and when wil youcome back?' Once I had given him a definite time, the king approved my mission.	6 Le roi me demanda - la reine était alors assise à ses côtés -: "Jusques à quand durera ton voyage?Quand reviendras-tu?" Je lui fixai une date, qui convint au roi, et il m'autorisa à partir.
7 I then said to the king, 'If the king approves, may I be given orders for the governors of Transeuphratesto let me pass through on my way to Judah?	7 Je dis encore au roi: "S'il plaît au roi, qu'on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs deTranseuphratène, afin qu'ils me laissent passer jusqu'à ce que j'arrive en Juda;
8 Also an order for Asaph, keeper of the king's forest, to supply me with timber for the beams of the gatesof the citadel of the Temple, for the city wal s and for the house which I am to occupy?' These the king grantedme because the kindly hand of my God was over me.	8 et aussi une lettre pour Asaph, l'inspecteur du parc royal, afin qu'il me fournisse du bois deconstruction pour les portes de la citadelle du Temple, le rempart de la ville et la maison où j'habiterai." Le roime l'accorda, car la main bienveillante de mon Dieu était sur moi.
9 When I reached the governors of Transeuphrates, I gave them the king's orders. The king had sent anescort of army officers and cavalry along with me.	9 Je me rendis donc chez les gouverneurs de Transeuphratène et leur remis les lettres du roi. Le roim'avait fait escorter par des officiers de l'armée et des cavaliers.
10 When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the official of Ammon heard about this, they wereexceedingly displeased that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.	10 Quand Sânballat, le Horonite, et Tobiyya, le fonctionnaire ammonite, furent informés, ils semontrèrent fort contrariés qu'un homme fût venu travailler au bien des Israélites.
11 And so I reached Jerusalem. After I had been there three days,	11 Arrivé à Jérusalem, j'y restai trois jours.
12 I got up during the night with a few other men -- I had not told anyone what my God had inspired me todo for Jerusalem -- taking no animal with me other than my own mount.	12 Puis je me levai, de nuit, accompagné de quelques hommes, sans avoir confié à personne ce quemon Dieu m'avait inspiré d'accomplir pour Jérusalem, et sans avoir avec moi d'autre animal que ma propremonture.
13 Under cover of dark I went out through the Val ey Gate towards the Dragon's Fountain as far as theDung Gate, and examined the wall of Jerusalem where it was broken down and its gates burnt out.	13 La nuit donc, sortant par la porte de la Vallée, je me rendis devant la fontaine du Dragon, puis àla porte du Fumier: je fis l'inspection du rempart de Jérusalem, où il y avait des brèches et dont les portes avaientété incendiées.
14 I then crossed to the Fountain Gate and the King's Pool, but it was impassable to my mount.	14 Je poursuivis mon chemin vers la porte de la Fontaine et l'étang du Roi, et ne trouvai plus depassage pour la bête que je chevauchais.
15 So I went up the Val ey in the dark, examining the wal ; I then went in again through the Val ey Gate,coming back	15 Je remontai donc de nuit par le ravin, inspectant toujours le rempart, et rentrai par la porte de laVallée. Je m'en revins ainsi,
16 without the officials knowing where I had gone or what I had been doing. So far I had said nothing tothe Jews: neither to the priests, the nobles, the officials nor any other persons involved in the undertaking.	16 sans que les conseillers sachent où j'étais allé ni ce que je faisais. Jusqu'ici je n'avais riencommuniqué aux Juifs: ni aux prêtres, ni aux grands, ni aux magistrats, ni aux autres responsables;
17 I then said to them, 'You see what a sorry state we are in: Jerusalem is in ruins and its gates havebeen burnt down. Come on, we must rebuild the wal s of Jerusalem and put an end to our humiliating position!'	17 je leur dis alors: "Vous voyez la détresse où nous sommes: Jérusalem est en ruines, ses portessont incendiées. Venez! reconstruisons le rempart de Jérusalem, et nous ne serons plus insultés!"
18 And I told them how the kindly hand of my God had been over me, and the words which the king hadsaid to me. At this they said, 'Let us start building at once!' and they set their hands to the good work.	18 Et je leur exposai comment la main bienveillante de mon Dieu avait été sur moi, leur rapportantaussi les paroles que le roi m'avait dites. "Levons-nous! s'écrièrent-ils, et construisons!" et ils affermirent leursmains pour ce bel ouvrage.
19 When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the official of Ammon, and Geshem the Arab heard about this,they laughed at us and jeered. They said, 'What is this you are doing? Are you going to revolt against the king?'	19 A ces nouvelles, Sânballat, le Horonite, Tobiyya, le fonctionnaire ammonite, et Géshem, l'Arabe,se moquèrent de nous et nous regardèrent avec mépris en disant: "Que faites-vous là? Allez-vous vous révoltercontre le roi?"
20 But I gave them this answer, 'The God of heaven will grant us success and we, his servants, mean tostart building; as for you, you have neither share nor right nor memorial in Jerusalem.'	20 Mais je leur répliquai en ces termes: "C'est le Dieu du ciel qui nous fera réussir. Nous, sesserviteurs, nous allons nous mettre à construire. Quant à vous, vous n'avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir dansJérusalem."
