2 Chronicles 17

1 When his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him, he made himself stronger against Israel	1 וימלך יהושפט בנו תחתיו ויתחזק על ישראל
2 by stationing troops in al the fortified towns in Judah and by garrisoning Judah and the towns ofEphraim which his father Asa had captured.	2 ויתן חיל בכל ערי יהודה הבצרות ויתן נציבים בארץ יהודה ובערי אפרים אשר לכד אסא אביו
3 Yahweh was with Jehoshaphat because he fol owed the example of his father's earlier days and didnot have recourse to Baal,	3 ויהי יהוה עם יהושפט כי הלך בדרכי דויד אביו הראשנים ולא דרש לבעלים
4 but sought Yahweh, the God of his father, fol owing his commandments and not behaving as Israeldid.	4 כי לאלהי אביו דרש ובמצותיו הלך ולא כמעשה ישראל
5 Because of this, Yahweh put him in secure control of the kingdom, while al Judah gave Jehoshaphatpresents until ample riches and honour were his.	5 ויכן יהוה את הממלכה בידו ויתנו כל יהודה מנחה ליהושפט ויהי לו עשר וכבוד לרב
6 He was so enthusiastic about obeying Yahweh that once again he abolished the high places andsacred poles in Judah.	6 ויגבה לבו בדרכי יהוה ועוד הסיר את הבמות ואת האשרים מיהודה
7 In the third year of his reign he sent his leading men-Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel andMicaiah, to give instruction in the towns of Judah.	7 ובשנת שלוש למלכו שלח לשריו לבן חיל ולעבדיה ולזכריה ולנתנאל ולמיכיהו ללמד בערי יהודה
8 With them went the Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan,Adonijah and Tobijah, the Levites; Elishama and Jehoram the priests went with them.	8 ועמהם הלוים שמעיהו ונתניהו וזבדיהו ועשהאל ושמרימות ויהונתן ואדניהו וטוביהו וטוב אדוניה הלוים ועמהם אלישמע ויהורם הכהנים
9 They gave instruction in Judah, having with them the book of the Law of Yahweh, and went round althe towns of Judah instructing the people.	9 וילמדו ביהודה ועמהם ספר תורת יהוה ויסבו בכל ערי יהודה וילמדו בעם
10 A panic from Yahweh seized all the kings of the countries surrounding Judah, as a result of whichthey did not make war on Jehoshaphat.	10 ויהי פחד יהוה על כל ממלכות הארצות אשר סביבות יהודה ולא נלחמו עם יהושפט
11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and a load of silver and the Arabs brought himseven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred he-goats.	11 ומן פלשתים מביאים ליהושפט מנחה וכסף משא גם הערביאים מביאים לו צאן אילים שבעת אלפים ושבע מאות ותישים שבעת אלפים ושבע מאות
12 Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful. He built fortresses and storage towns in Judah.	12 ויהי יהושפט הלך וגדל עד למעלה ויבן ביהודה בירניות וערי מסכנות
13 He accumulated ample supplies in the towns of Judah. He also had warriors, outstanding men, inJerusalem.	13 ומלאכה רבה היה לו בערי יהודה ואנשי מלחמה גבורי חיל בירושלם
14 According to family, this is how they were classified: Over the commanders of the thousands ofJudah was General Adnah, who had three hundred thousand outstanding men;	14 ואלה פקדתם לבית אבותיהם ליהודה שרי אלפים עדנה השר ועמו גבורי חיל שלש מאות אלף
15 Under him was General Jehohanan, who had two hundred and eighty thousand;	15 ועל ידו יהוחנן השר ועמו מאתים ושמונים אלף
16 Under him was Amasiah son of Zichri, who had volunteered for Yahweh and who had two hundredthousand outstanding men;	16 ועל ידו עמסיה בן זכרי המתנדב ליהוה ועמו מאתים אלף גבור חיל
17 That outstanding soldier, Eliada, represented Benjamin, and he had two hundred thousand menarmed with bow and shield;	17 ומן בנימן גבור חיל אלידע ועמו נשקי קשת ומגן מאתים אלף
18 And under him Jehozabad, who had one hundred and eighty thousand equipped for war.	18 ועל ידו יהוזבד ועמו מאה ושמונים אלף חלוצי צבא
19 These were in attendance on the king, apart from those whom the king had stationed in the fortifiedtowns al over Judah.	19 אלה המשרתים את המלך מלבד אשר נתן המלך בערי המבצר בכל יהודה
