1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.	1 Ioram, figlio di Acab, regnò sopra Israele in Samaria l'anno decimottavo di Giosafat re di Giuda, e regnò dodici anni.
2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.	2 Fece il male nel cospetto del Signore, ma non come suo padre e sua madre, perchè egli tolse le statue di Baal che suo padre aveva fatte.
3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.	3 Però stette tenace nei peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nabat, che fece peccare Israele, e non si allontanò da essi.
4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.	4 Or siccome Mesa re di Moab, che nutriva molti greggi, e doveva pagare al re d'Israele cento mila agnelli e cento mila montoni colla loro lana,
5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.	5 morto Acab, ruppe il patto che egli aveva col re d'Israele;
6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.	6 il re Ioram allora uscì da Samaria e fece la rassegna di tutto Israele;
7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'	7 e mandò a dire a Giosafat re di Giuda: « Il re di Moab mi si è ribellato: vieni meco alla guerra contro di lui ». Giosafat rispose: « Verrò: chi è mio è tuo; il mio popolo è il tuo popolo e i miei cavalli sono i tuoi cavalli ».
8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.	8 Poi disse: « Per quale via saliremo? » Ioram rispose: « Pel deserto d'Idumea ».
9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.	9 Si mossero adunque il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda e il re d'Edom. Dopo sette giorni di marcia mancò l'acqua per l'esercito e per le bestie che lo seguivano.
10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'	10 Il re d'Israele esclamò: « Ahi, ahi, ahi! Il Signore ha riuniti insieme noi tre re, per darci nelle mani di Moab ».
11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'	11 Ma Giosafat disse: « Non vi è qui un profeta del Signore, per implorare per mezzo di lui il Signore? » Uno dei servi del re d'Israele rispose: « Vi è qui Eliseo figlio di Safat, quello che versava l'acqua sulle mani d'Elia ».
12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.	12 Giosafat disse: « La parola del Signore è in lui ». Allora il re d'Israele, Giosafat re di Giuda e il re d'Edom andarono da lui.
13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,	13 Ma Eliseo disse al re d'Israele: « Che ho io da far con te? Va dai profeti di tuo padre e di tua madre ». E il re d'Israele a lui: « Perchè il Signore ha riuniti insieme questi tre re, per darli nelle mani di Moab? »
14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.	14 Eliseo gli disse: « Viva il Signore degli eserciti, al cospetto del quale io sto, se io non avessi riguardo a Giosafat re di Giuda, non solo non t'avrei dato retta, ma nemmeno guardato.
15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him	15 Ma ora conducetemi un suonatore d'arpa ». Mentre il suonatore d'arpa cantava, la mano del Signore fu sopra Eliseo, che disse:
16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"	16 « Il Signore dice così: Fate fosse e fosse nel letto di questo torrente;
17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."	17 perché ecco quanto dice il Signore: Voi non vedrete vento, nè pioggia, ma questo letto sarà pieno di acqua, e berrete voi, la vostra gente e le vostre bestie.
18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.	18 Di più essendo questo poco agli occhi del Signore, egli darà anche Moab nelle vostre mani;
19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'	19 e voi distruggerete tutte le città fortificate, tutte le città importanti, ed abbatterete tutti gli alberi fruttiferi, turerete tutte le sorgenti d'acqua, ricoprirete di pietre tutti i migliori campi ».
20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.	20 Infatti la mattina, nell'ora in cui si suole offrire il sacrifizio, ecco venire le acque per la via di Edom, e la terra fu ripiena d'aqua.
21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.	21 Or tutti i Moabiti, avendo saputo che quei re eran saliti per combattere contro di loro, adunarono tutti quelli che portavan balteo, ed anche al di sopra, e si fermarono ai confini.
22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.	22 Alzatisi di gran mattino quando il sole spuntò di faccia alle acque, i Moabiti, vedendo davanti le acque rosse come sangue,
23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'	23 dissero: « E' sangue di spada; i re son venuti a battaglia tra di loro: si son fatti a pezzi l'un l'altro. Ed ora, Moab, alla preda! »
24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.	24 Si avanzarono verso il campo d'Israele; ma Israele, levatosi, percosse Moab che fuggì davanti a loro. Allora i vincitori andarono a percuoter Moab,
25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.	25 e distrussero le città, gettando ciascuno la sua pietra nei campi migliori, li riempirono, e turarono tutte le sorgenti d'acqua, e abbatterono tutte le piante fruttifere: non fecero rimanere altro che le mura di mattone; e la città fu circondata dai frombolieri e in gran parte atterrata.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.	26 Quando il re di Moab vide che i nemici avevan prevalso, prese con sè settecento uomini che menavan la spada, e tentò d'irrompere verso il re di Edom; ma non fu possibile.
27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.	27 Allora, preso il suo figlio primogenito che doveva succedergli nel regno, l'offerse in olocausto sopra le mura. Vi fu una grande indignazione in Israele, e subito si ritiraron da lui e se ne tornarono al loro paese.
