1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.	1 L'anno diciottesimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, Ioram, figlio di Acab, divenne re d'Israele in Samaria, dove regnò dodici anni.
2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.	2 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, ma non come suo padre e sua madre. Rimosse infatti la stele di Baal che suo padre aveva fatto,
3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.	3 tuttavia rimase attaccato ai peccati che Geroboamo, figlio di Nebàt, fece commettere a Israele e non se ne allontanò.
4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.	4 Mesa, re di Moab, era pastore e pagava in tributo al re d'Israele centomila agnelli e la lana di centomila montoni.
5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.	5 Quando però morì Acab, il re di Moab si ribellò al re d'Israele.
6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.	6 In quel giorno il re Ioram uscì da Samaria e passò in rassegna tutto Israele.
7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'	7 Poi mandò a dire a Giosafat, re di Giuda: "Il re di Moab si è ribellato contro di me; vuoi venire con me a combattere contro Moab?". Quegli rispose: "Salirò! Sarà di me come di te, del mio popolo come del tuo, dei miei cavalli come dei tuoi".
8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.	8 Poi domandò: "Per quale via saliremo?". L'altro rispose: "Per la via del deserto di Edom".
9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.	9 Il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda e il re di Edom si misero in viaggio. Compirono un percorso aggirante di sette giorni e venne a mancare l'acqua per la truppa e le bestie della retrovia.
10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'	10 Il re d'Israele esclamò: "Ahimè! Il Signore ha chiamato questi tre re per darli in mano di Moab".
11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'	11 Ma Giosafat domandò: "Non c'è qui un profeta del Signore per mezzo del quale possiamo consultare il Signore?". Uno dei servi del re d'Israele rispose: "C'è qui Eliseo, figlio di Safat, che versava l'acqua sulle mani di Elia".
12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.	12 Giosafat soggiunse: "La parola del Signore è con lui". Il re d'Israele, Giosafat e il re di Edom discesero dunque da lui.
13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,	13 Eliseo disse al re d'Israele: "Che c'è tra me e te? Va' dai profeti di tuo padre e dai profeti di tua madre!". Gli rispose il re d'Israele: "No, perché il Signore ha chiamato questi tre re per darli in mano a Moab".
14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.	14 Eliseo replicò: "Com'è vero che vive il Signore degli eserciti, davanti al quale sto, non ti darei retta né ti degnerei neppure di uno sguardo, se non fosse per riguardo di Giosafat, re di Giuda.
15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him	15 Ora conducetemi un suonatore di lira". Mentre il suonatore pizzicava le corde, la mano del Signore fu sopra Eliseo
16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"	16 che disse: "Così parla il Signore: "Scavate in questa valle numerose fosse".
17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."	17 Infatti così parla il Signore: "Non vedrete né vento né pioggia; tuttavia questa valle si riempirà di acqua e ne berrete voi, la vostra truppa e le vostre bestie".
18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.	18 Ma questo è ancor poco agli occhi del Signore, perché egli darà Moab nelle vostre mani.
19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'	19 Voi colpirete tutte le città fortificate, abbatterete tutti gli alberi buoni, otturerete tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e disseminerete di sassi i campi migliori".
20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.	20 Al mattino seguente, nell'ora in cui si fa l'oblazione, sopraggiunse l'acqua dalla parte di Edom e la regione ne fu piena.
21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.	21 Avendo sentito che i re salivano per muovere loro guerra, i Moabiti convocarono tutti gli uomini capaci di portare le armi e si schierarono alla frontiera.
22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.	22 Levatisi al mattino, quando il sole splendeva sull'acqua, i Moabiti videro di fronte a loro l'acqua rossa come sangue.
23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'	23 Dissero: "Questo è sangue! Certamente i re sono venuti alle mani e si sono uccisi l'un l'altro. Orsù, Moab, al saccheggio".
24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.	24 Ma quando giunsero all'accampamento degl'Israeliti, questi si levarono e li batterono. Quei Moabiti poi che tentavano di fuggire davanti a loro, gl'Israeliti li inseguirono e li colpirono.
25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.	25 Distrussero le città e gettarono delle pietre, una ciascuno, in tutti i campi migliori, fino a riempirli, ostruirono tutte le sorgenti d'acqua, e abbatterono tutti gli alberi buoni. Rimase soltanto Kir-Careset, che i frombolieri accerchiarono e attaccarono.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.	26 Quando il re di Moab vide che non poteva sostenere il combattimento, prese con sé settecento uomini armati di spada e tentò di aprirsi un varco verso il re di Edom, ma non vi riuscì.
27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.	27 Allora prese il suo figlio primogenito, che doveva regnare al suo posto, e lo immolò in olocausto sulle mura. Ma si scatenò una grande collera contro gl'Israeliti, che si allontanarono da lui e ritornarono al loro paese.
