1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.	1 - Joram figlio di Acab regnò in Samaria sopra Israele il decimottavo anno di Josafat, re di Giuda. Regnò dodici anni,
2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.	2 e fece il male al cospetto del Signore, ma non come il padre suo e la madre sua. Abbattè infatti le statue di Baal, che suo padre aveva erette;
3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.	3 tuttavia si abbandonò ai peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nabat, che aveva fatto peccare Israele, e non se ne distolse.
4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.	4 Ora Mesa, re di Moab, allevava molto bestiame e pagava al re di Israele centomila agnelli e centomila arieti colla loro lana.
5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.	5 Ma, morto Acab, ruppe il patto, che aveva col re d'Israele.
6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.	6 Perciò il re Joram uscì in quel tempo da Samaria e passò in rassegna tutto Israele;
7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'	7 e mandò a dire a Josafat, re di Giuda: «Il re di Moab si è ribellato a me; vieni con me alla guerra contro di lui». Josafat rispose: «Verrò: ciò che è mio è tuo; il mio popolo è tuo popolo, i miei cavalli sono tuoi cavalli».
8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.	8 Poi disse: «Per qual via saliremo noi?», e Joram gli rispose: «Per il deserto dell'Idumea».
9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.	9 Andarono adunque il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda e il re di Edom e, dopo aver camminato sette giorni, venne a mancar l'acqua per l'esercito, e per le bestie che lo seguivano.
10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'	10 Disse il re d'Israele: «Ohimè! Ohimè! Ohimè! Il Signore ha riunito insieme noi tre re per darci nelle mani di Moab».
11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'	11 Disse allora Josafat: «Non vi è qui un profeta del Signore affinchè per mezzo suo possiamo implorare il Signore?». E uno dei servi del re d'Israele disse: «Vi è qui Eliseo figlio di Safat, che versava l'acqua sulle mani di Elia».
12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.	12 Allora Josafat disse: «La parola del Signore è con lui». Il re d'Israele, e Josafat, re di Giuda e il re di Edom andarono quindi a trovarlo.
13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,	13 Eliseo disse allora al re di Israele: «Che v'ha tra me e te? Va' dai profeti del padre tuo e della madre tua». Ma il re d'Israele gli domandò: «Per qual motivo il Signore ha riunito insieme questi tre re, per darli nelle mani di Moab?».
14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.	14 Gli rispose Eliseo: «Viva il Signore degli eserciti, al cui cospetto io sto! Se io non avessi rispetto a Josafat, re di Giuda, non mi sarei curato di te e non ti avrei neppure guardato.
15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him	15 Ora però conducetemi un sonatore d'arpa». Mentre il sonatore d'arpa toccava il suo istrumento, la mano del Signore fu sopra Eliseo, che disse:
16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"	16 «Il Signore dice queste cose: - Fate nel letto di questo torrente fosse e fosse, -
17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."	17 poichè il Signore dice così: - Voi non vedrete nè vento nè pioggia, e questo letto si riempirà d'acqua e berrete voi e le vostre famiglie, e le vostre bestie. -
18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.	18 Ma ciò è poco al cospetto del Signore; egli darà inoltre Moab nelle vostre mani,
19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'	19 e voi abbatterete tutte le città fortificate e tutte le città ragguardevoli e taglierete ogni albero fruttifero e turerete tutte le fonti d'acqua e coprirete di pietre tutte le migliori campagne».
20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.	20 Il mattino dopo al momento in cui si suole offrire il sacrificio, ecco che le acque scesero per la via di Edom, e la terra fu ripiena di acqua.
21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.	21 Frattanto tutti i Moabiti all'udire che i re erano saliti per combattere contro di loro, convocarono tutti quelli che erano in grado di portare le armi e occuparono le frontiere.
22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.	22 Si erano alzati al primo far del giorno e quando il sole fu alto, dirimpetto alle acque, i Moabiti videro di contro le acque rosse come sangue, e dissero:
23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'	23 «È sangue di spada. I re son venuti a battaglia tra loro e si son trucidati a vicenda; su dunque alla preda, o Moab».
24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.	24 E si avanzarono verso il campo d'Israele. Ma Israele si levò e sconfisse Moab, che fuggì dinanzi a loro. Vennero adunque i vincitori e batterono i Moabiti,
25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.	25 distrussero le città e, gittando ciascuno pietre, riempirono ogni campo migliore, turarono tutte le fonti di acqua; e tagliarono poi tutti gli alberi fruttiferi, in modo che non restarono che le mura di mattone; ma la città fu circondata dai frombolieri e per la massima parte abbattuta.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.	26 Avendo dunque visto il re Moab che i nemici avevano avuto vantaggio, prese con sè settecento guerrieri per muovere incontro al re di Edom, ma non potè.
27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.	27 Preso allora il figliuolo suo primogenito, che avrebbe dovuto regnare in sua vece, lo immolò in olocausto sulle mura; e ne venne una grande indignazione tra gli Israeliti che subito si allontanarono da lui e ritornarono nel proprio territorio.
