1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.	1 Pendant la dix-huitième année du règne de Josaphat, roi de Juda, Joram fils d’Akab devint roi d’Israël à Samarie. Il régna 12 ans;
2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.	2 il fit ce qui déplaît à Yahvé, mais pas autant que son père et sa mère, car il fit disparaître la pierre que son père avait dressée en l’honneur de Baal.
3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.	3 Cependant il resta attaché au péché de Jéroboam fils de Nabat, lequel avait entraîné Israël dans son péché: il ne s’en détourna pas.
4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.	4 Mécha, roi de Moab, était un éleveur de troupeaux. Il livrait au roi d’Israël un tribut de 100 000 agneaux et 100 000 béliers avec leur laine.
5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.	5 Mais à la mort d’Akab, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d’Israël.
6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.	6 Alors le roi Joram sortit de Samarie et passa Israël en revue;
7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'	7 il se mit en marche et envoya dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda: “Le roi de Moab s’est révolté contre moi, viendras-tu attaquer Moab avec moi?” Josaphat répondit: “J’irai: il en sera de moi comme de toi, de mon peuple comme de ton peuple, et de mes chevaux comme de tes chevaux.”
8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.	8 Il ajouta: “Par quel chemin iras-tu?” Joram répondit: “Par la route du désert d’Édom.”
9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.	9 Le roi d’Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d’Édom se mirent en route, mais après 7 jours de marche il n’y avait plus d’eau pour l’armée ni pour les bêtes.
10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'	10 Alors le roi d’Israël dit: “Ah, ah! Yahvé a donc rassemblé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab!”
11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'	11 Josaphat lui demanda: “N’y a-t-il pas ici un prophète de Yahvé par lequel nous pourrions consulter Yahvé?” L’un des serviteurs du roi d’Israël lui dit: “Il y a ici Élisée fils de Chafat, celui qui versait l’eau sur les mains d’Élie.”
12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.	12 Josaphat dit: “La parole de Yahvé est avec lui.” Alors le roi d’Israël, Josaphat et le roi d’Édom descendirent à sa rencontre.
13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,	13 Élisée dit au roi d’Israël: “Qu’est-ce que j’ai à voir dans tes affaires? Va donc trouver les prophètes de ton père!” Mais le roi d’Israël insista: “C’est Yahvé qui a fait venir ces trois rois, va-t-il maintenant les livrer entre les mains de Moab?”
14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.	14 Élisée lui dit: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé des armées, celui que je sers, est vivant, si je n’avais pas égard à Josaphat roi de Juda, je ne te regarderais même pas, je ne te verrais pas.
15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him	15 Maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe.” Pendant que le harpiste jouait, la main de Yahvé fut sur Élisée.
16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"	16 Il dit alors: “Ainsi parle Yahvé: Creusez des fosses et des fosses dans cette vallée!
17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."	17 Car voici ce que dit Yahvé: Vous ne verrez pas de vent, vous ne verrez pas de pluie, et cependant la vallée se remplira d’eau. Alors vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et vos bêtes de somme.
18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.	18 Mais tout cela est peu de chose aux yeux de Yahvé, il veut encore livrer Moab entre vos mains.
19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'	19 Vous frapperez toutes les villes fortifiées, vous abattrez tous les arbres fruitiers, vous boucherez toutes les sources d’eau et vous dévasterez tous les meilleurs champs en y jetant des pierres.”
20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.	20 De fait, au matin, à l’heure où l’on présente le sacrifice, voici que l’eau arriva par le chemin d’Édom et la terre se remplit d’eau.
21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.	21 Tous les Moabites avaient appris que les rois s’avançaient pour les attaquer; tous les hommes capables de porter les armes furent donc rassemblés et ils se postèrent sur la frontière.
22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.	22 Ils s’étaient levés de bon matin, et lorsque le soleil brilla au-dessus des eaux, les Moabites virent les eaux en face d’eux rouges comme du sang.
23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'	23 Ils se dirent: “C’est du sang! Les rois se sont battus, ils se sont frappés les uns les autres! Maintenant, Moabites, au pillage!”
24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.	24 Ils s’avancèrent donc vers le camp d’Israël, mais les Israélites se levèrent et frappèrent Moab qui prit la fuite devant eux; ils pénétrèrent dans le pays de Moab et le dévastèrent.
25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.	25 Ils détruisirent les villes: chacun jetait sa pierre dans les meilleurs champs, au point qu’ils en étaient remplis. Ils bouchèrent toutes les sources et abattirent tous les arbres fruitiers, si bien qu’il ne resta rien à Kir-Hérès sinon ses pierres. Les frondeurs qui l’avaient encerclée la harcelèrent.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.	26 Lorsqu’il vit que la bataille tournait mal pour lui, le roi de Moab prit 700 hommes armés d’épées pour faire une percée en direction du roi d’Édom; mais il ne réussit pas.
27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.	27 Alors il prit son fils aîné, celui qui devait régner à sa place et il l’offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. À la suite de cela, les Israélites eurent de grosses difficultés, ils s’éloignèrent de lui et regagnèrent leur pays.
