1 Jehoram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned for twelve years.	1 Toram figliuolo di Achab cominciò a regnare sopra Israele in Samaria l'anno decimo ottavo di Josaphat re di Giuda, ed ei regnò dodici anni.
2 He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, though not like his father and mother, for he did away with thepil ar to Baal which his father had made.	2 E fece il male nel cospetto del Signore, ma non quanto suo padre, e sua madre: perocché egli tolse via le statue di Baal, fatte dal padre suo.
3 Nonetheless, he continued to practise the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel and didnot give them up.	3 Con tutto ciò egli stette fisso ne' peccati di Jeroboam figliuolo di Nabat, il quale indusse Israele a peccare, e non se ne distaccò.
4 Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and used to pay the king of Israel in tribute a hundredthousand lambs and a hundred thousand rams with their wool.	4 Or Mesa re di Moab teneva quantità grande di bestiami, e pagava al re d'Israele cento mila agnelli, e cento mila arieti colle loro lane.
5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebel ed against the king of Israel.	5 Ed egli, morto che fu Achab, ruppe i patti, che avea col re d'Israele.
6 At once King Jehoram left Samaria and mustered al Israel.	6 E il re Joram allora partì da Samaria, e fece rassegna di tutto Israele.
7 After this he sent word to the king of Judah, 'The king of Moab has rebel ed against me. Wil you go towar with me against Moab?' 'I wil ,' he replied. 'I wil be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours,'	7 E mandò a dire a Josaphat re di Giuda: Il re di Moab si è ribellato da me, vieni meco a fargli guerra. E quegli rispose: Verrò: chi è con te, è con me: il popol mio è tuo popolo, e i miei cavalli sono tuoi cavalli.
8 and added, 'Which way are we to attack?' 'Through the desert of Edom,' the other answered.	8 E soggiunse: Da qual parte aneleremo noi? E quegli rispose: Pel deserto dell'Idumea.
9 So they set out, the king of Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They carried out a flankingmovement for seven days, until there was no water left for the troops or for the beasts of their baggage train.	9 Si mossero adunque il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda, e il re di Edom, e fecero un giro di sette giorni di strada, e mancava l'acqua all'esercito, e alle bestie, che gli andavan dietro.
10 'Alas!' the king of Israel exclaimed, 'Yahweh has summoned us three kings, only to put us into thepower of Moab.'	10 E il re d'Israele disse: Ahi, ahi, ahi; il Signore ha riuniti insieme noi tre regi, per darci in potere di Moab.
11 But the king of Judah said, 'Is there no prophet of Yahweh here for us to consult Yahweh through him?'One of the king of Israel's servants answered, 'Elisha son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on thehands of Elijah.'	11 Ma Josaphat disse: V'ha egli qui un profeta del Signore, affine d'implorare per mezzo di lui l'aiuto del Signore? E uno dei servi del re d'Israele gli rispose: Havvi Eliseo figliuolo di Saphath, il quale dava l'acqua alle mani ai Elia.
12 'The word of Yahweh is with him,' the king of Judah said. So the king of Israel, the king of Judah andthe king of Edom went to consult him.	12 E Josaphat disse: Il Signore parla per sua bocca. E andarono a trovarlo il re d'Israele, e Josaphat re di Giuda, e il re di Edom.
13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel, 'What business have you with me? Go to your father's and yourmother's prophets.' 'No,' the king of Israel answered, 'Yahweh is the one who has summoned us three kings,only to put us into the power of Moab.' Elisha replied,	13 Or Eliseo disse al re d'Israele:Che ho io da far con te? Vattene da' profeti del padre tuo, e della tua madre. E il re d'Israele gli disse: Per qual motivo il Signore ha uniti insieme tre regi, per darli nelle mani di Moab?
14 'By the life of Yahweh Sabaoth whom I serve, if I did not respect the king of Judah, I would take nonotice of you, nor so much as look at you.	14 Ed Eliseo gli disse: Viva il Signore degli eserciti, al cospetto del quale io sto: se io non avessi rispetto a Josaphat re di Giuda, io non ti avrei dato retta, né ti avrei guardato in faccia.
15 Now bring me someone who can play the lyre.' And as the musician played, the hand of Yahweh cameon him	15 Ora voi conducetemi un sonatore di arpa: e mentre il sonatore arpeggiava cantando, la mano del Signore fu sopra di lui, ed egli disse:
16 and he said, 'Yahweh says this, "Dig in this val ey ditch after ditch,"	16 Il Signore dice così: Fate nel letto di questo torrente delle fosse, e delle fosse.
17 for Yahweh says, "You wil see no wind, you will see no rain, but this val ey wil become ful of water,and you and your troops and your baggage animals will drink."	17 Imperocché il Signore dice: Voi non vedrete vento, né pioggia, e questo letto sarà ripieno di acque, e berete voi, e la vostra gente, e le vostre bestie.
18 But this is only a trifle in Yahweh's eyes, for he wil put Moab itself into your power.	18 E questo è poco pel Signore: egli di più darà anche Moab nelle vostre mani.
19 You wil storm every fortified town, fell every productive tree, block every water-hole, ruin al the bestfields with stones.'	19 Ed espugnerete tutte le città forti, e tutte le città ragguardevoli, e troncherete tutti gli alberi da frutto, e turerete tutte le sorgive delle acque, e tutte le più grasse campagne ricoprirete di sassi.
20 Next morning at the time when the oblation was being offered, water came from the direction of Edom,and the whole terrain was flooded.	20 La mattina adunque in quell' ora, in cui suole offerirsi il sagrifizio, subitamente le acque principiarono a scorrere per la strada di Edom, e la terra fu inondata dalle acque.
21 When the Moabites learned that the kings were advancing to fight them, al those of an age to beararms were mobilised; they took up position on the frontier.	21 Or tutti i Moabiti avendo udito, come quei re si eran mossi per combatterli, raunatono tutti quelli, che portavano balteo, e all'insù, e si fermarono ai confini.
22 In the morning when they got up, the sun was shining on the water; and in the distance the Moabitessaw the water as red as blood.	22 Ed essendosi alzati alla punta del dì, allorché venne a spuntare il sole dirimpetto alle acque, i Moabiti videro di contro le acque rosse come sangue.
23 'This is blood!' they said. 'The kings must have fought among themselves and killed one another. Sonow for the booty, Moab!'	23 E dissero: Egli è sangue di uccisi: i re son venuti tra di loro a battaglia, e si son trucidati gli uni gli altri. Va ora, o Moab, a raccoglier la preda.
24 But when they reached the Israelite camp, the Israelites launched their attack and the Moabites fledbefore them, and as they advanced they cut the Moabites to pieces.	24 E si avanzarono verso gli alloggiamenti d'Israele; ma gl'Israeliti si mossero, e sbaragliarono i Moabiti, i quali voltaron loro le spalle. I vincitori pertanto inseguirono, e trucidarono i Moabiti,
25 They laid the towns in ruins, and each man threw a stone into al the best fields to fil them up, and theyblocked every water-hole and felled every productive tree. In the end, there was only Kir-Hareseth left, which theslingers surrounded and bombarded.	25 E distrussero le loro città, e gettando ognuno una pietra ne' campi migliori, li riempirono, e turarono tutte le sorgive delle acque, e tagliarono tutte le piante da frutto: non vi restarono se non le mura di mattone: ma la città fu circondata da' frombolieri, e atterata in gran parte.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had turned against him, he mustered seven hundredswordsmen in the hope of breaking a way out and going to the king of Aram, but he failed.	26 Avendo adunque veduto il re di Moab, come i nemici erano i più forti, prese seco settecento uomini valorosi di mano, affine di sforzare il campo del re di Edom; ma non ottener l'intento.
27 Then he took his eldest son who was to succeed him and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wal .Alarmed at this, the Israelites withdrew and retired to their own territory.	27 E preso il suo figliuolo primogenito, che dovea succedergli nel regno, lo offerse in olocausto sopra le mura, la qual cosa fece gran commozione negl' Israeliti, e subito si ritiraron da lui, e se ne tornarono alle case loro.
