1 There were seventy of Ahab's sons in Samaria. Jehu sent to Samaria, to the authorities of the city, tothe elders and to the guardians of Ahab's children. He said,	1 Essendovi in Samaria settanta figli di Acab, Iehu scrisse una lettera e la mandò a Samaria, ai grandi della città, agli anziani e a quelli ch'educavano i figli di Acab. Egli diceva:
2 'Now, when this letter reaches you, you have your master's sons with you; you also have chariots andhorses, a fortified city and weapons.	2 « Appena ricevuta questa lettera, voi che avete nelle mani i figli del vostro signore, i carri, i cavalli, le città forti e le armi,
3 See which of your master's sons is the best and worthiest, put him on his father's throne and fight for your master's dynasty!'	3 scegliete il migliore e quello che più vi piacerà tra i figli del signor vostro, collocatelo sul trono di suo padre e combattete per la casa del vostro signore ».
4 They were utterly terrified. 'We have seen how the two kings could not stand up to him,' they said, 'sohow could we?'	4 Essi ebbero gran paura, e dissero: « Ecco, due re non han potuto resistere davanti a lui, e come potremo resister noi? »
5 Consequently the master of the palace, the governor of the city, the elders and the guardians sentword to Jehu, 'We are your servants. We shal do whatever you order us. We shall not proclaim a king; act asyou think best.'	5 I prefetti del palazzo, i governatori della città, gli anziani e gli educatori mandarono a dire a Iehu: « Noi siamo tuoi servi, faremo tutto quello che ordinerai, non ci eleggeremo alcun re: fa tutto quello che ti piace ».
6 Jehu then wrote them a second letter. He said, 'If you are for me and if you are prepared to acceptorders from me, take the heads of the men of your master's family and come to me at Jezreel by this timetomorrow.' (There were seventy of Ahab's sons being educated there by the leading men of the city.)	6 Ed egli scrisse loro di nuovo una lettera in cui diceva: « Se voi siete dei miei e ubbidite a me, tagliate le teste dei figli del vostro signore e venite da me, domani, a quest'ora, in Iezrael ». 8 The messenger came and told Jehu, 'They have brought the heads of the king's sons.' 'Leave them intwo heaps at the entrance to the gate until morning,' he replied.	8 Il messo andò ad informarlo con queste parole: « Han portato le toste dei figli del re ». Iehu rispose: « Fino a domattina lasciatele in due mucchi all'entrata della porta ».
9 When morning came, he went out and, standing, said to all the people, 'No guilt attaches to you! I didindeed plot against my master and have kil ed him; but what about al these? Who struck them?	9 Fattosi giorno, egli uscì fuori, e, fermatosi, disse a tutto il popolo: « Voi siete giusti: io congiurai contro il mio signore e lo uccisi; ma tutti questi chi li ha ammazzati?
10 Know, then, that nothing will fail to be fulfil ed of the prophecy uttered by Yahweh against the Houseof Ahab; Yahweh has done what he said through his servant Elijah.'	10 Riconoscete adunque che non è caduta per terra nemmeno una delle parole del Signore, che il Signore disse contro la casa di Acab, e che il Signore ha fatto quello che disse per mezzo del suo servo Elia ».
11 Jehu then kil ed every member of the House of Ahab surviving in Jezreel, all his leading men, hisclose friends, his priests; he did not leave a single one alive.	11 Iehu percosse poi tutti quelli che restavano della casa di Acab in Iezrael, i grandi tutti della sua corte, i suoi famigliari, i suoi sacerdoti fino a sterminarli tutti.
12 Jehu then set out for Samaria. As he was on his way, at Beth-Eked of the Shepherds,	12 Poi si levò per andare a Samaria. Giunto che fu alla capanna dei pastori, che era sulla strada,
13 he met the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah. 'Who are you?' he asked. 14 'Take them alive,' he said. They took them alive, and he slaughtered them at the storage-wel of Beth-Eked, forty-two of them; he did not spare a single one.	14 Iehu disse: « Prendeteli vivi ». E presili che li ebbero vivi, li ammazzarono sulla cisterna, alla capanna, in numero di quarantadue, e non ne lasciarono nemmeno uno.
15 Leaving there, he came on Jehonadab son of Rechab who was on his way to meet him. He greetedhim and said, 'Is your heart true to mine, as my heart is to yours?' Jehonadab replied, 'Yes.' 'If so,' Jehu said,'give me your hand.' Jehonadab gave him his hand, and Jehu took him up beside him in his chariot.	15 Partitosi di là, trovò Ionadab, figlio di Recab, che gli veniva incontro. Lo salutò e gli disse: « Il tuo cuore è retto come il mio cuore col tuo? » Ionadab rispose: « Sì ». « Se così è, disse Iehu, dammi la mano ». 16 'Come with me,' he said, 'and witness my zeal for Yahweh,' and took him along in his chariot.	16 e gli disse: « Vieni con me e vedrai il mio zelo per il Signore ». Fattolo salire sul cocchio,
17 When he entered Samaria, he kil ed al the survivors of Ahab's family there; he destroyed it, asYahweh had told Elijah it would happen.	17 lo condusse in Samaria, ove, secondo la parola che il Signore aveva pronunziata per bocca d'Elia, fece uccidere tutti, fino ad uno, quelli che restavano della casa di Acab.
18 Then Jehu assembled al the people. 'Ahab did Baal some smal service,' he said, 'but Jehu wil dohim a great one.	18 Poi Iehu radunò tutto il popolo e disse loro: « Acab ha onorato poco Baal: io l'onorerò di più.
19 Now cal me al the prophets of Baal and al his priests. Not one is to be absent: I have a greatsacrifice to offer to Baal. If anyone is absent, he wil forfeit his life.' This was a trick on Jehu's part to destroy thedevotees of Baal.	19 Fate adunque venire da me tutti i profeti di Baal, tutti i suoi servi, i suoi sacerdoti: nessuno manchi, perchè io devo fare un gran sacrifizio a Baal; chi mancherà non vivrà ». Iehu faceva questo con astuzia, per sterminare gli adoratori di Baal.
20 'Summon a sacred assembly for Baal,' he commanded; and they summoned it.	20 Iehu disse: « Bandite un giorno di festa solenne a Baal ».
21 Jehu sent messengers throughout Israel, and all the devotees of Baal arrived, not a man was left whodid not attend. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from wal to wall.	21 Oltre all'invitare, mandò per tutto il territorio d'Israele; sicché vennero tutti i servi di Baal, non ne mancò neppure uno, ed entrarono nel tempio di Baal, e la casa di Baal fu ripiena da un capo all'altro.
22 Jehu then said to the keeper of the wardrobe, 'Bring out vestments for al the devotees of Baal'; hebrought out the vestments for them.	22 Iehu disse a quelli che avevano in custodia le vesti: « Mettete fuori le vesti per tutti i servi di Baal ». Essi le misero fuori.
23 Jehu then went into the temple of Baal with Jehonadab son of Rechab and said to Baal's devotees,'Make quite sure that there are no devotees of Yahweh in here with you, but only devotees of Baal.'	23 Poi Iehu, entrato nel tempio di Baal, con Ionadab figlio di Recab, disse agli adoratori di Baal: « Cercate bene e badate che non vi sia tra voi alcuno dei servi del Signore; ma vi siano soltanto i servi di Baal ».
24 He then proceeded to present sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty of hismen outside, having said, 'Whoever lets one of the people go whom I am now putting within your clutches, wilpay for it with his life.'	24 Essi allora entrarono a offrire vittime ed olocausti. Or Iehu aveva preparato di fuori ottanta uomini, ai quali aveva detto: « Chi farà fuggire uno qualunque di questi uomini che vi metto nelle mani, darà la sua vita per quella del fuggito ».
25 When he had finished making the burnt offering, he gave the order to the guards and equerries, 'Goin, strike them down! Let no one out!' The guards and equerries went in, putting everyone to the sword al theway to the sanctuary of Baal's temple.	25 Finito che fu l'olocausto, Iehu diede ai suoi soldati e ai suoi ufficiali quest'ordine: « Entrate e uccideteli: nessuno scampi ». 26 They took the sacred pole out of Baal's temple and burned it.	26 trassero fuori dal tempio la statua di Baal, e la bruciarono,
27 They demolished Baal's image and demolished Baal's temple too, making it into a latrine, which it stilis today.	27 e la ridussero in polvere. E distrussero anche il tempio di Baal, e vi fecero delle latrine, che vi sono fino al presente.
28 Thus Jehu rid Israel of Baal.	28 Iehu sterminò Baal da Israele;
29 Even so, Jehu did not give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel, the goldencalves of Bethel and Dan.	29 ma non si allontanò dai peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nabat, il quale fece peccare Israele; non abbandonò i vitelli d'oro che erano a Betel e a Dan.
30 Yahweh said to Jehu, 'Since you have done wel in carrying out what pleases me, and have doneeverything I required to be done to the House of Ahab, your sons wil occupy the throne of Israel down to thefourth generation.'	30 Il Signore disse adunque a Iehu: « Siccome tu hai fatto con zelo ciò che era retto e piaceva ai miei occhi, ed hai fatto contro la casa di Acab tutto quello che io avevo nel cuore, fino alla quarta generazione i tuoi figli sederanno sul trono d'Israele ».
31 Jehu, however, did not faithful y and wholeheartedly fol ow the law of Yahweh, God of Israel; he didnot give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel.	31 Ma Iehu non ebbe premura di camminare con tutto il suo cuore nella legge del Signore Dio d'Israele: infatti non si allontanò dai peccati di Geroboamo, il quale fece peccare Israele.
32 At that time Yahweh began to whittle Israel down, and Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout theterritory east of the Jordan:	32 In quel tempo il Signore cominciò a stancarsi d'Israele; sicché Azael li percosse su tutto il territorio d'Israele:
33 the whole territory of Gilead -- of the Gadites, the Reubenites and the Manassehites -- from Aroer onthe River Arnon: Gilead and Bashan.	33 ad oriente del Giordano, tutta la terra di Galaad, di Gad, di Ruben e di Manasse: da Aroer che è sul torrente Arnon, fino a Galaad e Basan.
34 The rest of the history of Jehu, his entire career, al his prowess, is this not recorded in the Book ofthe Annals of the Kings of Israel?	34 Il resto degli atti di Iehu, quello che fece, le sue prodezze, non son tutte queste cose scritte nel libro delle gesta della vita dei re d'Israele?
35 Then he fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria; his son Jehoahaz succeeded him.	35 E Iehu si addormentò coi suoi padri e fu sepolto in Samaria e gli successe nel regno Ioacaz suo figlio.
36 Jehu's reign over Israel in Samaria lasted twenty-eight years.	36 Il tempo che Iehu regnò sopra Israele in Samaria fu di ventotto anni.
