1 There were seventy of Ahab's sons in Samaria. Jehu sent to Samaria, to the authorities of the city, tothe elders and to the guardians of Ahab's children. He said,	1 Or Achab avea settanta figliuoli in Samaria. Jehu pertanto scrisse lettere a Samaria ai magnati della città, e ai seniori, e a que', che educavano i figliuoli di Achab, nelle quali diceva:
2 'Now, when this letter reaches you, you have your master's sons with you; you also have chariots andhorses, a fortified city and weapons.	2 Subito che avrete ricevuta questa lettera voi, che avete nelle mani i figliuoli del signor vostro, e i cocchi, e i cavalline le città forti, e le armi.
3 See which of your master's sons is the best and worthiest, put him on his father's throne and fight for your master's dynasty!'	3 Scegliete il migliore, e quello, che più a voi piacerà tra i figliuoli del signor vostro, e collocatelo sul trono del padre suo, e combattete per la famiglia del signor vostro.
4 They were utterly terrified. 'We have seen how the two kings could not stand up to him,' they said, 'sohow could we?'	4 Coloro ebbero gran paura, e dissero: Ecco, che non han potuto resistere a lui due re, e come potremo resistere noi?
5 Consequently the master of the palace, the governor of the city, the elders and the guardians sentword to Jehu, 'We are your servants. We shal do whatever you order us. We shall not proclaim a king; act asyou think best.'	5 Per la guai cosa i maggiordomi, e i prefetti delle città, e i seniori, e gli aj mandarono a dire a Jehu: Noi siamo tuoi servi; faremo tutto quello, che tu ordinerai, e non ci eleggeremo un re: fa tutto quel, che ti piace.
6 Jehu then wrote them a second letter. He said, 'If you are for me and if you are prepared to acceptorders from me, take the heads of the men of your master's family and come to me at Jezreel by this timetomorrow.' (There were seventy of Ahab's sons being educated there by the leading men of the city.)	6 Ed egli scrisse loro un'altra lettera, in cui diceva: Se voi siete miei, e ubbidite a me, prendete le teste de' figliuoli del signor vostro, e venite a trovarmi domane a quest'ora stessa in Jezrael. Or i figliuoli del re in numero di settanta erano allevati nelle case de' magnati della città.
7 When this letter reached them, they took the king's sons and butchered al seventy of them, put theirheads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.	7 E ricevuta che ebbero questi la lettera, presero i settanta uomini figliuoli del re, e gli uccisero, e posero le loro teste in cestini, e le mandarono a lui in Jezrael.
8 The messenger came and told Jehu, 'They have brought the heads of the king's sons.' 'Leave them intwo heaps at the entrance to the gate until morning,' he replied.	8 E arrivò un messo, e portogli tal nuova, dicendo: Hanno portate le teste de' figliuoli del re. Ed ei rispose: Mettetele in due mucchi vicino all'entrar della porta per fino a domattina.
9 When morning came, he went out and, standing, said to all the people, 'No guilt attaches to you! I didindeed plot against my master and have kil ed him; but what about al these? Who struck them?	9 E fattosi giorno, egli uscì fuora, e fermatosi disse a tutto il popolo: Voi siete giusti: se io congiurai contro il signor mio, e lo uccisi, chi ha uccisi costoro?
10 Know, then, that nothing will fail to be fulfil ed of the prophecy uttered by Yahweh against the Houseof Ahab; Yahweh has done what he said through his servant Elijah.'	10 Adesso adunque riflettete, come non è caduta per terra una parola di quello, che il Signore disse intorno alla casa di Achab, e come il Signore ha fatto quello, che predisse per mezzo di Elia suo servo.
11 Jehu then kil ed every member of the House of Ahab surviving in Jezreel, all his leading men, hisclose friends, his priests; he did not leave a single one alive.	11 Jehu allora fece morire tutti quelli della famiglia di Achab, che restavano in Jezrael, e tutti i suoi grandi, e i famigliari, e i sacerdoti fino che ne restò anima.
12 Jehu then set out for Samaria. As he was on his way, at Beth-Eked of the Shepherds,	12 E parti, e andò a Samaria: e arrivato che fu ad una capanna di pastori, che era sulla strada,
13 he met the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah. 'Who are you?' he asked. 'We are Ahaziah's brothers,'they replied, 'and we are on our way to pay our respects to the king's sons and the queen mother's sons.'	13 s'imbattè ne' fratelli di Ochozia re di Giuda, e disse loro: Chi siete voi? Ed ei risposero: Siam fratelli di Ochozia, e siamo venuti a salutare i figliuoli del re, e i figliuoli della regina.
14 'Take them alive,' he said. They took them alive, and he slaughtered them at the storage-wel of Beth-Eked, forty-two of them; he did not spare a single one.	14 E Jehu diede quest'ordine: Prendeteli vivi. E quando furono presi vivi, gli scannarono sulla cisterna, che era presso alla capanna, in numero di quarantadue persone: e non ne lasciò in vita nissuno.
15 Leaving there, he came on Jehonadab son of Rechab who was on his way to meet him. He greetedhim and said, 'Is your heart true to mine, as my heart is to yours?' Jehonadab replied, 'Yes.' 'If so,' Jehu said,'give me your hand.' Jehonadab gave him his hand, and Jehu took him up beside him in his chariot.	15 E partitosi da quel luogo incontrò Jonadab figliuolo di Rechab, che venivagli incontro, e lo salutò, e gli disse: Il tuo cuore è egli retto verso di me, come il mio verso di te? E Jonadab disse: Così è. Se è così, Diss'egli, dammi la mano. E quegli porse a lui la mano. Ed ei lo fece salir nel suo cocchio:
16 'Come with me,' he said, 'and witness my zeal for Yahweh,' and took him along in his chariot.	16 E disse a lui: Vieni meco, e vedrai lo zelo, che io ho pel Signore. E fattolo salir sul suo cocchio,
17 When he entered Samaria, he kil ed al the survivors of Ahab's family there; he destroyed it, asYahweh had told Elijah it would happen.	17 Lo condusse in Samaria. E fece uccidere in Samaria que', che resta vano della casa di Achab tutti fino ad uno, secondo la parola pronunziata dal Signore per mezzo di Elia.
18 Then Jehu assembled al the people. 'Ahab did Baal some smal service,' he said, 'but Jehu wil dohim a great one.	18 Allora Jehu radunò tutto il popolo, e disse loro: Achab rendette un po' di culto a Baal; ma io gli ne renderò di più.
19 Now cal me al the prophets of Baal and al his priests. Not one is to be absent: I have a greatsacrifice to offer to Baal. If anyone is absent, he wil forfeit his life.' This was a trick on Jehu's part to destroy thedevotees of Baal.	19 Or adunque convocate dinanzi a me tutti i profeti di Baal, e tutti i servi, e i sacerdoti di lui: nissuno manchi di venire; perocché io fo un sacrifizio grande a Baal: chi non verrà, non viverà. Ma Jehu faceva questo con frode, per isterminare gli adoratori di Baal.
20 'Summon a sacred assembly for Baal,' he commanded; and they summoned it.	20 Ed egli disse: Si santifichi il dì solenne di Baal. E mandò a far l'invito per tutte le regioni d'Israele:
21 Jehu sent messengers throughout Israel, and all the devotees of Baal arrived, not a man was left whodid not attend. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from wal to wall.	21 E vennero tutti i servi di Baal e neppur uno vi fu, che mancasse dì venire: ed entraron nel tempio di Baal, e la casa di Baal ne fu ripiena da un lato all'altro.
22 Jehu then said to the keeper of the wardrobe, 'Bring out vestments for al the devotees of Baal'; hebrought out the vestments for them.	22 E disse a quelli, che avean in custodia le vestimenta: Mettete fuori le vesti per tutti i servi di Baal. E quelli le miser fuora.
23 Jehu then went into the temple of Baal with Jehonadab son of Rechab and said to Baal's devotees,'Make quite sure that there are no devotees of Yahweh in here with you, but only devotees of Baal.'	23 E Jehu essendo entrato nel tempio di Baal con Jonadab figliuolo di Rechab, disse agli adoratori di Baal: Fate diligenza, e badate, che nissun sia tra voi de' servi del Signore, ma ci siano soli i servi di Baal.
24 He then proceeded to present sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty of hismen outside, having said, 'Whoever lets one of the people go whom I am now putting within your clutches, wilpay for it with his life.'	24 Quelli pertanto entrarono per offerir le vittime, e gli olocausti: ma Jehu teneva pronti al di fuori ottanta uomini, a' quali avea detto: Se uno lascerà fuggire chicchessia di questi uomini, i quali io do in vostro potere, egli pagherà colla sua vita la vita di quello.
25 When he had finished making the burnt offering, he gave the order to the guards and equerries, 'Goin, strike them down! Let no one out!' The guards and equerries went in, putting everyone to the sword al theway to the sanctuary of Baal's temple.	25 Finito adunque che fu l'olocausto, Jehu diede l'ordine a' suoi soldati, ed ai capitani: Entrate dentro, e uccidete coloro, e nissuno abbia scampo. E i soldati, e i capitani li trucidarono, e gli stesero al suolo: e andarono alla città del tempio di Baal,
26 They took the sacred pole out of Baal's temple and burned it.	26 E portaron fuora del tempio la statua di Baal, e la bruciarono, e la ridussero in cenere,
27 They demolished Baal's image and demolished Baal's temple too, making it into a latrine, which it stilis today.	27 E distrussero anche il tempio di Baal, e vi fecero delle latrine, che vi son anche oggidì.
28 Thus Jehu rid Israel of Baal.	28 Così Jehu sterminò Baal dal paese d'Israele:
29 Even so, Jehu did not give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel, the goldencalves of Bethel and Dan.	29 Egli però non si allontanò dai peccati di Jeroboam figliuolo di Nabath, il quale indusse Israele a peccare; e non abbandonò i vitelli d'oro, che erano a Bethel, e a Dan.
30 Yahweh said to Jehu, 'Since you have done wel in carrying out what pleases me, and have doneeverything I required to be done to the House of Ahab, your sons wil occupy the throne of Israel down to thefourth generation.'	30 Or il Signore disse a Jehu: Per che tu hai fatto puntualmente quello, che era giusto, e secondo il mio bene placito, e hai eseguito quello, che io avea risoluto contro la casa di Achab, i tuoi figliuoli sederanno fino alla quar ta generazione sul trono d'Israele.
31 Jehu, however, did not faithful y and wholeheartedly fol ow the law of Yahweh, God of Israel; he didnot give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel.	31 Ma Jehu non ebbe premura di camminare con tutto il cuor suo nella legge del Signore Dio d'Israele; perocché non si dilungò dai peccati di Geroboam, il quale avea indotto Israele a peccare.
32 At that time Yahweh began to whittle Israel down, and Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout theterritory east of the Jordan:	32 In quel tempo il Signore cominciò a prendere in aversione Israele; e Hazaele li trucidava da ogni parte de' confini d'Israele.
33 the whole territory of Gilead -- of the Gadites, the Reubenites and the Manassehites -- from Aroer onthe River Arnon: Gilead and Bashan.	33 Di là dal Giordano a levante (egli devastò) tutta la terra di Galaad, e di Gad, e di Ruben, e di Manasse, da Aroer, che è sul torrente Arnon, e Galaad, e Basan.
34 The rest of the history of Jehu, his entire career, al his prowess, is this not recorded in the Book ofthe Annals of the Kings of Israel?	34 Il rimanente poi delle azioni di Jehu, e tutto quello, ch'egli operò, e com'ei fu valoroso, tutte queste cose non son elleno scritte nel giornale de' fatti dei re d'Israele?
35 Then he fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria; his son Jehoahaz succeeded him.	35 E Jehu si addormentò co' padri suoi, e lo seppellirono in Samaria, e Joachaz suo figliuolo gli succedette nel regno.
36 Jehu's reign over Israel in Samaria lasted twenty-eight years.	36 E il tempo, che Jehu regnò sopra Israele in Samaria, fu di anni ventotto.
