1 There were seventy of Ahab's sons in Samaria. Jehu sent to Samaria, to the authorities of the city, tothe elders and to the guardians of Ahab's children. He said,	1 - Acab avea in Samaria settanta figli. Jeu scrisse adunque una lettera e la mandò in Samaria ai principali tra i cittadini, agli anziani e a quei che educavano i figli di Acab, dicendo:
2 'Now, when this letter reaches you, you have your master's sons with you; you also have chariots andhorses, a fortified city and weapons.	2 «Appena riceverete questa lettera voi che tenete in custodia i figli del vostro padrone, i carri, i cavalli, le fortezze e le armi,
3 See which of your master's sons is the best and worthiest, put him on his father's throne and fight for your master's dynasty!'	3 eleggete il migliore e collocate sul trono del padre suo chi più vi piacerà dei figli del vostro padrone e combattete per la casa del vostro padrone».
4 They were utterly terrified. 'We have seen how the two kings could not stand up to him,' they said, 'sohow could we?'	4 Essi temettero grandemente e dissero: «Due re non hanno potuto resistergli, come potremmo resistergli noi?».
5 Consequently the master of the palace, the governor of the city, the elders and the guardians sentword to Jehu, 'We are your servants. We shal do whatever you order us. We shall not proclaim a king; act asyou think best.'	5 Perciò i capi della casa, i prefetti della città e gli anziani e gli educatori [dei figli di Acab] andarono a dire a Jeu: «Noi siamo tuoi servitori e faremo tutto ciò che ci comandi; non eleggeremo nessun re: fa' tu quel che ti piace».
6 Jehu then wrote them a second letter. He said, 'If you are for me and if you are prepared to acceptorders from me, take the heads of the men of your master's family and come to me at Jezreel by this timetomorrow.' (There were seventy of Ahab's sons being educated there by the leading men of the city.)	6 Jeu mandò per la seconda volta una lettera, dicendo: «Se siete miei e se mi ubbidite, prendete le teste dei figli del vostro padrone e domani a quest'ora venite a me in Jezrael». Ora i figli del re, settanta di numero, erano allevati presso i maggiorenti della città.
7 When this letter reached them, they took the king's sons and butchered al seventy of them, put theirheads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.	7 Questi, al giungere della lettera loro indirizzata, presero i figli del re e li uccisero tutti e settanta e ne misero le teste in canestri e li mandarono a lui in Jezrael.
8 The messenger came and told Jehu, 'They have brought the heads of the king's sons.' 'Leave them intwo heaps at the entrance to the gate until morning,' he replied.	8 Giunse poi un messo a dare [a Jeu] l'annunzio, dicendo: «Hanno portato le teste dei figli del re». Ed egli rispose: «Fatene due mucchi all'entrata della porta, fino a domattina».
9 When morning came, he went out and, standing, said to all the people, 'No guilt attaches to you! I didindeed plot against my master and have kil ed him; but what about al these? Who struck them?	9 Appena fu giorno, uscì e al cospetto di tutto il popolo disse: «Voi siete giusti: se io ho congiurato contro il mio padrone e lo uccisi, chi ha uccisi tutti costoro?
10 Know, then, that nothing will fail to be fulfil ed of the prophecy uttered by Yahweh against the Houseof Ahab; Yahweh has done what he said through his servant Elijah.'	10 Vedete adunque che neppure una delle parole che il Signore pronunciò contro la casa di Acab è caduta a terra e il Signore ha compiuto quello che ha detto per bocca del suo servo Elia».
11 Jehu then kil ed every member of the House of Ahab surviving in Jezreel, all his leading men, hisclose friends, his priests; he did not leave a single one alive.	11 Jeu adunque uccise tutti quelli che erano restati della casa di Acab in Jezrael, tutti i grandi della corte, i suoi familiari e i suoi sacerdoti, senza che ne scampasse uno solo.
12 Jehu then set out for Samaria. As he was on his way, at Beth-Eked of the Shepherds,	12 Poi si levò e andò in Samaria. Giunto che fu alla Capanna dei pastori, posta sulla sua strada,
13 he met the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah. 'Who are you?' he asked. 'We are Ahaziah's brothers,'they replied, 'and we are on our way to pay our respects to the king's sons and the queen mother's sons.'	13 trovò i fratelli di Ocozia, re di Giuda, e domandò loro: «Chi siete voi?», ed essi risposero: «Siamo i fratelli di Ocozia e siamo venuti per salutare i figli del re e i figli della regina».
14 'Take them alive,' he said. They took them alive, and he slaughtered them at the storage-wel of Beth-Eked, forty-two of them; he did not spare a single one.	14 Jeu ordinò: «Pigliateli vivi»; e come li ebbero presi vivi, li sgozzarono nella cisterna vicina alla Capanna dei pastori in numero di quarantadue e non ne scampò neppur uno.
15 Leaving there, he came on Jehonadab son of Rechab who was on his way to meet him. He greetedhim and said, 'Is your heart true to mine, as my heart is to yours?' Jehonadab replied, 'Yes.' 'If so,' Jehu said,'give me your hand.' Jehonadab gave him his hand, and Jehu took him up beside him in his chariot.	15 Partitosi di là, trovò Jonadab figlio di Recab, che gli veniva incontro; lo salutò, e gli chiese: «È il tuo cuore retto [verso di me], come lo è il mio cuore a tuo riguardo?». Rispose Jonadab: «Lo è». «Se lo è», rispose «dammi la mano». Avendogli egli dato la mano, se lo tirò con sè sul carro
16 'Come with me,' he said, 'and witness my zeal for Yahweh,' and took him along in his chariot.	16 e gli disse: «Vieni con me e vedrai il mio zelo per il Signore». E fattolo salire con sè sul suo carro,
17 When he entered Samaria, he kil ed al the survivors of Ahab's family there; he destroyed it, asYahweh had told Elijah it would happen.	17 lo condusse in Samaria, dove uccise tutti quelli che rimanevano di Acab in Samaria, secondo la parola che il Signore avea proferito per mezzo di Elia.
18 Then Jehu assembled al the people. 'Ahab did Baal some smal service,' he said, 'but Jehu wil dohim a great one.	18 Jeu riunì allora tutto il popolo per dirgli: «Acab ha onorato poco Baal, ma io lo servirò molto di più.
19 Now cal me al the prophets of Baal and al his priests. Not one is to be absent: I have a greatsacrifice to offer to Baal. If anyone is absent, he wil forfeit his life.' This was a trick on Jehu's part to destroy thedevotees of Baal.	19 Perciò chiamate dinanzi a me tutti i profeti di Baal, tutti i suoi servi e tutti i suoi sacerdoti: nessuno manchi, perchè io devo fare un gran sacrificio a Baal. Chiunque mancherà, sarà ucciso». Jeu però faceva questo con astuzia per disperdere gli adoratori di Baal.
20 'Summon a sacred assembly for Baal,' he commanded; and they summoned it.	20 Disse poi: «Santificate un giorno solenne a Baal»; e fece inviti
21 Jehu sent messengers throughout Israel, and all the devotees of Baal arrived, not a man was left whodid not attend. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from wal to wall.	21 e mandò dei messi fino ai più lontani confini d'Israele, e da ogni parte accorsero i servi di Baal, e neppur uno vi fu che mancasse. Entrarono nel tempio di Baal e la casa di Baal fu riempita da un capo all'altro.
22 Jehu then said to the keeper of the wardrobe, 'Bring out vestments for al the devotees of Baal'; hebrought out the vestments for them.	22 Jeu poi disse a quelli che avevano in custodia i vestiti: «Distribuite le vesti a tutti i servi di Baal». Ed essi estrassero le vesti.
23 Jehu then went into the temple of Baal with Jehonadab son of Rechab and said to Baal's devotees,'Make quite sure that there are no devotees of Yahweh in here with you, but only devotees of Baal.'	23 Entrato poi Jeu con Jonadab figlio di Recab, nel tempio di Baal, disse agli adoratori di Baal: «Cercate e vedete che tra voi non vi sia per caso alcuno dei servi del Signore; ma fate che vi siano soltanto i servi di Baal».
24 He then proceeded to present sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty of hismen outside, having said, 'Whoever lets one of the people go whom I am now putting within your clutches, wilpay for it with his life.'	24 Entrarono adunque per offrire vittime e olocausti. Jeu però aveva preparato fuori ottanta uomini, a cui avea detto: «Se alcuno lascerà sfuggire uno di questi uomini che io metterò in vostra mano, la sua vita risponderà per quella del fuggiasco».
25 When he had finished making the burnt offering, he gave the order to the guards and equerries, 'Goin, strike them down! Let no one out!' The guards and equerries went in, putting everyone to the sword al theway to the sanctuary of Baal's temple.	25 Non appena fu terminato l'olocausto, Jeu comandò ai soldati e a tutti i loro capi: «Entrate, uccideteli e fate in modo che nessuno fugga». Ed essi percossero a colpi di spada e gettarono a terra i soldati e i capitani, ed entrati nel tempio di Baal,
26 They took the sacred pole out of Baal's temple and burned it.	26 trassero fuori dal santuario la statua di Baal, la bruciarono
27 They demolished Baal's image and demolished Baal's temple too, making it into a latrine, which it stilis today.	27 e la ridussero in polvere; distrussero anche il tempio di Baal e vi fecero una cloaca, che sussiste tuttora.
28 Thus Jehu rid Israel of Baal.	28 Jeu adunque sterminò Baal da Israele.
29 Even so, Jehu did not give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel, the goldencalves of Bethel and Dan.	29 Tuttavia non si astenne dai peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nabat, che avea fatto prevaricare Israele, nè abbandonò i vitelli d'oro che stavano in Betel e in Dan.
30 Yahweh said to Jehu, 'Since you have done wel in carrying out what pleases me, and have doneeverything I required to be done to the House of Ahab, your sons wil occupy the throne of Israel down to thefourth generation.'	30 Disse perciò il Signore a Jeu: «Poichè hai fatto con diligenza ciò che era giusto e piaceva agli occhi miei, e hai eseguito contro la casa di Acab ciò che era secondo la mia volontà, i tuoi figliuoli staranno sul trono di Israele fino alla quarta generazione».
31 Jehu, however, did not faithful y and wholeheartedly fol ow the law of Yahweh, God of Israel; he didnot give up the sins into which Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel.	31 Jeu però non si curò di camminare con tutto il suo cuore nella legge del Signore Dio d'Israele e non si ritrasse dai peccati di Geroboamo, che aveva fatto prevaricare Israele.
32 At that time Yahweh began to whittle Israel down, and Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout theterritory east of the Jordan:	32 In quei giorni il Signore cominciò a provare avversione per Israele, e Azael percosse gli Israeliti in tutti i loro confini,
33 the whole territory of Gilead -- of the Gadites, the Reubenites and the Manassehites -- from Aroer onthe River Arnon: Gilead and Bashan.	33 nella parte orientale del Giordano tutta la terra di Galaad e i territori di Gad, di Ruben, e di Manasse e di Aroer, che è sul torrente Arnon, fino a Galaad e Basan.
34 The rest of the history of Jehu, his entire career, al his prowess, is this not recorded in the Book ofthe Annals of the Kings of Israel?	34 Il resto delle azioni di Jeu e tutto ciò che fece e le sue imprese, non stanno forse scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d'Israele?
35 Then he fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria; his son Jehoahaz succeeded him.	35 Dormì Jeu coi padri suoi e venne sepolto in Samaria. E regnò Joacaz figliuol suo in sua vece.
36 Jehu's reign over Israel in Samaria lasted twenty-eight years.	36 Jeu poi regnò sopra Israele, in Samaria, ventotto anni.
